Schools Project

Purpose Of This Assignment


The aim of this process is to enable actors to develop and perform an outreach drama
project designed to raise and answer questions to help improve the society we live in. By
the end of the process actors will be able to plan and lead workshops by investigating the
necessity of performing arts workshops within the profession and the development of
necessary skills.
Scenario
As a company you will create a piece of childrens theatre between 50 70 minutes long
that will be toured in local schools. The tour will be organised by the company itself. As part
of the package the company will lead 30 minute taster workshops with the pupils of the
school.
Task 1: UNIT 44 (LO1: 1.1, 1.2,1.3) (D3)
You are expected to understand the historical context of outreach drama. You will be assessed
on the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Research Outreach Drama and Community Theatre and critically evaluate the links
between the art forms, how they have developed, where they are performed and
produced and how they are impacting society at a local and national level? (1.1, 1.2, 1.3)
Devise a creative scene explaining the links between Community Theatre and Outreach
Drama and assessing the geographic and artistic footprints they are having on a local
and national level. (1.2, 1.3)

To achieve D3, a detailed and creative approach will have been taken to the understanding and
presentation of research material.
Task 2: UNIT 44 (LO2: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) (M1, D1)
You are required to understand how to set up and develop an outreach liaison. You will be
assessed on the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Plan and deliver a variety of creative workshops based on themes and styles that are
presented to you by your director. The structure, environment and use of props must

justified.
To achieve M3, the delivery of workshops, communication of information and use of media will
be appropriate and understood by all audiences.

You must be able to be able to lead a full workshop using the skills acquired. You will be
assessed on your performance and the evidence you provide for the following tasks.

Deliver workshops to school children using appropriate strategies to stimulate the


group to achieve the sessions pre-planned aims. (3.1)
Assign and undertake roles of responsibility within workshops to ensure the sessions are
controlled, managed and efficiency is maintained. (3.2)
Deliver a successful workshop to school children by responding to the changing needs of
the group. The effectiveness of the workshop must be monitored and recognised

Always ensure that the exercises are appropriate for the workshop participants.

When rehearsing a workshop you must remember to treat the participants as though you
have never met them.
The quality of the touch is vital when working with deaf and blind participants. You must
make sure that you are accurate and appropriate.
You must search to develop new methods and strategies for communicating as workshop
leaders without disrupting the flow of the session.
Find appropriate mechanisms to praise the participants when targets are met and they
achieve a given task.
Always ensure that the tasks/exercises that you set are relevant and aid the purpose of the

Summative Feedback
Amber, this process has proven to be enormously challenging and a great number of demands have
been placed on you within a very short span of time. You have responded with enthusiasm,
interest, playfulness and determination. You have proven yourself to be a passionate performer
with a dynamic physicality and the ability to embrace and respond to directors notes quickly. You
worked well with your company members and developed a strong chemistry within your casting
group. Your confidence to share your ideas with the company has grown tremendously. You must
continue to work on putting your voice into the space. You are now beginning to understand the
responsibilities of the workshop leader and have begun to take a more a direct approach to
commanding the room. You must remember that leading a workshop is effectively a performance
and vocal technique is essential.
