STAFF MANAGEMENT OF COMPUTER CENTRE

FACILITIES THAT AVAILABLE ON COMPUTER CENTRE

There are four computer training laboratories, each with about 60 computers, for undergraduate
students. These are in addition to the more than 200 computers hosted in smaller postgraduate or
departmental computer rooms and individual staff offices throught the university.
Most of the computers in the university, including those in student training/working laboratories, are
connected in a local area network, hence making it possible to shared hardware, software, and use data
resources in the university. The network is based on fiber optic backbone and is running at 100mbps.
The university's computer system is connected to the internet via Zantel Company with .Hence all
computers which are in the LAN are automatically connected to the internet and users can have easy
access to such internet services as email, and other electronic information services.

Computer Centre is responsible:

Location of books or journals

Link with other research institutions using communication technology.
Put research information in the web page.
Research and connectivity with external knowledge sources.

RESEARCH & OUTREACH AT COMPUTER CENTERS

Academic staff and students can only achieve a competitive level of research and produce
state ofthe art publications once they have full access to knowledge sources inside as well as
outside the University.
Staff and students should have an easy and quick way of locating books, journals and other
publications.
Also at any one time, it should be easy to know what type of research have been or are being
conducted at SUA, by who and where in order to facilitate access and exchange of
information.

CHALLENGES FACING COMPUTER CENTER

No enough computers to accommodate the available student under the computer center in the
practical studies
Damage of network cable within the laboratories that leads to the difficult situation for
accessing wireless network
Damaged of computers that caused by improper maintenance of the computer in those lab
Lack of standard laboratories room may cause the computer structure not appear in proper
intellectual format
Slow wireless speed in the whole UNIVERSITY especially in computer laboratories

DEVELOPMENT WITHIN OF COMPUTER CENTER

During inauguration of computer center, there is some having the development that success within
computer center.

TECHNOLOGY(DIT)

Computer center has purchase 20 computer(Dell desktop computer) which has been
installed at laboratory(SGLB1).Returns shown the installation of these computers,

Computer center has been successful to building server room at Solomon Malangu
Compass (SMC)
Also computer center has been successful to provide a wireless network at UNIT 4

CONCLUSION
Present there are three computer laboratory in which two of them have each 60 computers(SGLB3
and new computer laboratory) and the last one have 20 new computer which has been installed last
month(SGLB1).
Most of the computers in the university, including those in student training/working laboratories, are
connected in a local area network, hence making it possible to shared hardware, software, and use data
resources in the university.
Computer center now are in process of assuring that the wireless network will not be the problem
within computer laboratory and to the whole university in general by installing new wireless network
eg wireless network at unit 4 and installation of new computers in computer laboratory which will lead
to good learning and teaching computer courses (eg certificate/diploma in information technology and
informatics) also will help student in accessing materials ,data or information over the internet.
