TYPE203:
DIRECTFIREDDOUBLEEFFECTWATERLiBrABSORPTION
CHILLER
GeneralDescription
Thiscomponentmodelsthethermalperformanceandpower(gasandelectric)requirementsofadirect
fired(naturalgas)doubleeffectwaterlithiumbromide(LiBr)absorptionchillerinparallelflowconfiguration.
AdiagramofthechillercycleisgiveninFigure1.Themodelwaswritteninageneralformatwithrespectto
theinputsandparameters,andcalculatesthecoolingload,heatinput,COP,outletchilledandcoolingwater
temperatures,andtheelectricalenergyconsumedbythechiller,forarangeofoperatingloads,chilledwater
setpoints,chilledandcoolingwaterflowrates,andinletcoolingwatertemperatures. Modelparametersare
availablefromamanufacturer'scatalog.Thechillerwasmodeledaftertheparallelflowconfiguration,patented
byYork/Hitachi(seemanufacturercatalogsYorkAppliedSystems[1992,1993]). Othermanufacturersuse
sometypeofseriesflowconfiguration,andsothemodelmayormaynotbeapplicabletotheseconfigurations.
Aspartloadperformancedataarenotgivenbytheseothermanufacturers(onlytheYorkcatalogs),thismodel
maybeusedtopredictthechillerperformanceatanyoperatingloadandconditions.Thesechillersareusedin
commercialcoolingapplications,withtypicalrated(nominal)capacitiesof100tonsorgreater.
The model has been developed using the performance results from a steady state, mechanistic
computersimulationmodelofthechillerdevelopedfromfirstprinciplesbyKoeppel,KleinandMitchell[1995]
(also Koeppel [1994]) using an equation solver program, EESEngineering Equation Solver (Klein and
Alvarado[1993]).Theperformanceresultsareindependentoftheunitsize(nominalcapacity)andratedCOP.
Abriefdescriptionofthemodelisgiven.Massandenergyequationswerewrittenforeachofthecomponents,
alongwiththeappropriateequilibriumequations,andallheattransferrateswereexpressedasafunctionofthe
logmean temperature difference. The model calculates cycle state point temperatures, pressures, and
concentrationsandtherequiredinputforagivenloadandoperatingconditions(chilledandcoolingwaterflow
rates and temperatures). The model nominal fullload performance was calibrated against manufacturer
nominalfullloadoperatingdataandCOP(YorkAppliedSystems[1992,1993]andAizawa,NagaoandKazuo
[1981]):unknownmodelparameterssuchasthecomponentnominalUAvaluesandnominalparallelflowsplit
parameterweredeterminedbymatchingthemodel'scalculatedstatepointsandCOPagainstthedataandCOP.
AftertheUAvaluesweredetermined,theywereadjustedforpartloadoperationusingappropriatemassflow
ratesandaccepted heat transfer correlations. Themodel calculated performance duetoloweringtheinlet
coolingwatertemperaturetothechilleratfullloadconditionsagreeswiththecatalog'sperformance(York
AppliedSystems[1992]).Modelperformanceforincreasingtheoutletchilledwatertemperatureatfullload
conditionsslightlyunderpredictsthecatalogperformance(YorkAppliedSystems[1992])withamaximum2
percentdifference.Forchillerpartloadperformanceatnominaltemperatures,themodelslightlyunderpredicts
thecatalogdata(YorkAppliedSystems[1992])withamaximum6percentdifference.
TwoYorkchillersareavailabledependingontheratedcapacity.Unitswitharatedcapacityof422.4
kW(120tons)through704kW(200tons)haveanominalCOPof1.0,andunitswitharatedcapacityof880
kW(250tons)through5279.8kW(1500tons)haveanominalCOPof0.92.ThedifferenceintheratedCOPs
isduetoslightlydifferentequipmentconfigurationandsizes.Themechanisticmodelwasdevelopedforthe
largerunits,buttheperformanceratingsgivenbyYorkforbothunitsareidenticalanditisassumedthatthe
resultsobtainedfromthemechanisticmodelareapplicabletothesmallerunitswithahighernominalCOP.
