PERFORMING ARTS
Beyond the stage, Lied Center artists enrich the lives of Nebraska
students. Imagine the transformation and inspiration of students
working with Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Suzanne Farrell ballet
dancers, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater or orchestral great, the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lied Center artists not only perform
on the stage, they also enlighten young people in the classroom.
Your support and involvement at the Lied Center is the foundation that
has made our organization a fundamental part of the fabric of the community. Your future patronage ensures that we
continue to present the greatest artists in the world, expand the number of young people who are transformed by our
arts programs and makes sure that future generations will have the Lied Center for Performing Arts as an essential
place in their lives for years to come.
Food and water help us live, but the arts give us something to live for. Thank you for being a part of the Lied Centers
25th year as Nebraskas Home for the Arts.
Sincerely,
Bill Stephan

Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha
Buick dealership and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960.
After Lieds death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to
serve as the Lied Foundations sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision
to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she
also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNLs Hixson-Lied College of Fine
and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was
a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Centers new multi-purpose
space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson
built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions
of people in Nebraska and across the nation.
The opening of the Lied Center for Performing Arts in 1990 represented a huge step forward
for the cultural landscape of the University and the state. Over its 25-year history, the Lied
Center has provided education and entertainment for hundreds of thousands of Nebraskans.
Generations of students have experienced cultural education and enrichment thanks to the
Lied Centers location on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. I know I echo the
sentiments of many when I express pride in claiming the Lied Center as an important part
of the University. My congratulations to the staff of the Lied for enhancing the lives of so
many Nebraskans by consistently presenting outstanding national and international talent
on the Lied stage.
~ HARVEY PERLMAN, CHANCELLOR
ARTIST/STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Education is central to the Lied Centers mission. The Lied staff approaches every artist about engagement opportunities
with students while they are in Lincoln. At least once a year, the Lied Center works to arrange special residency
programs that allow students and artists to spend an extended period of time working together. Over the years,
Nebraska students have had opportunities to connect with Yo-Yo Ma, Bill Cosby, Pilobolus, the Joffrey Ballet and
the casts of countless Broadway shows including South Pacific, RENT and Fiddler on the Roof.
UNL STUDENTS DANCE WITH DRONES
In April 2014, students from the College of Architecture,
Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering and
the Glenn Korff School of Music Dance Program joined
forces with STREB, an internationally renowned dance
company known for their gravity-defying choreography.
The Lied Commons was built in 2012 thanks to a $2.5 million gift from the Ernst F. Lied Foundation Trust to enhance
the Lied Center and provide an additional space for student learning, artist interactions and patron development.
Christina Hixson chose to give this final gift from the Lied Trust recognizing the need for an education and development
space, as well as an opportunity to increase the Lied Centers role as Lincolns premier venue for special community
events. The Commons has been used extensively in its early years of operation with nearly 200 events held in the
space, from small concerts to wedding receptions to board meetings.
PHOTOS: 1) Nearly 200 events have been held in the Lied Commons
since its completion in 2012. 2) The Commons abundant windows
allow guests to enjoy one of the best views on campus. 3) Christina
Hixson cuts the ribbon at the Lied Commons dedication ceremony
with other community leaders (L-R: Bill Stephan, Chris Beutler, Terry
Fairfield, Juan Franco, Charles O'Connor and Ellen Weissinger).
4) School children from Waverly visit the newly opened Lied Center
in 1990. 5) Yo-Yo Ma directs fellow musicians among them another
iconic performer, violinist Isaac Stern (left), in 1993. 6) Woody and
Sheila envisioned the Lied Plaza to be a community gathering
place. Today the plaza serves as a space for students to congregate
between classes and for families to enjoy before performances.
LIED VISIONARIES
WOODY VARNER
Many consider D.B. Woody Varner to be
the father of the Lied Center. He came
to Nebraska by way of Michigan State,
was the first person to hold the title of
President of the University of Nebraska
(19701977) and later became chairman
of the NU Foundation until 1987. While
others shared the idea of building a
performing arts center on the Lincoln campus, the dream
for the Lied Center truly took shape through his leadership.
While Woodys background was in agriculture, he had
a strong conviction that a truly academically rounded
individual should have some appreciation for the arts.
While the building did not go up until Woody was at the NU
Foundation, it was his determination to raise the necessary
funds that finally made his lifelong vision a reality.
Woody passed away in 1999, but many still remember
him and his mission to bring the finest artists in the world
to Nebraska. His mark will forever be on the University
and the Capital City thanks to his undying commitment
to this dream.
SHEILA GRIFFIN
If Woody Varner was the father of
the Lied Center, then Sheila Griffin
was certainly the mother. Sheila
was pivotal in every aspect of the Lied
Center. She was a key fundraiser and
project director during the initial stages,
and finally was appointed the Interim
Executive Director as the building took
shape. She also orchestrated the first Friends of Lied
committee which later grew into the statewide board.

In March 2014 Artistic Director Jim Morrow and Mermaid
Theatre of Nova Scotia cast members delighted over
100 preschoolers, parents and teachers with face-to-face
exchanges using puppetry to encourage a love of literature.
Mermaid Theatre's spectacular and colorful puppets visited
participants of Lincoln Public Schools Family Literacy
Program and The Childrens Place Child Care Center,
demonstrating the Very Hungry Caterpillars metamorphosis
into a beautiful butterfly, the fanciful account of Little Clouds
travels through the sky and the Mixed-Up Chameleons
discovery of his own unique nature.
The Lied Center presented several matinee performances of
The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites
for area schools. Designed for teachers and their students,
this was one of four dazzling matinees featuring dance,
theater or music, including performances by the April Verch
Band and Soweto Gospel Choir.

You know the Lied Center for Performing Arts as the place
that presents the greatest artists in the world ranging
from Itzhak Perlman and Wynton Marsalis to Alvin Ailey
American Dance Theater and the Joffrey Ballet. But did
you know that the Lied Center has a whole program called
Grow A Show that is dedicated to creating great art, too?
The Grow A Show program aligns with the Lied Centers
mission to not only present great art, but to be a place
where fresh and innovative work is born.
The Lied Center and the Grow A Show program have a
long history of developing new works. Since we opened

Dear Friends,
Nebraskans are sophisticated, educated, connected and demand
the best when it comes to entertainment. I am honored to serve as
Artistic Director for Nebraskas Home for the Arts, particularly in this
very special 25th anniversary year.
Executive Director Bill Stephan and I thrive on the challenge of
offering seasons that are even better than the previous ones and
we are proud to say that this season is one of the best in Lied
Center history, featuring marquee artists in every art form. Getting the
greatest artists in the world to the Lied Center is not always an easy
task. Programming our seasons is a collaborative process between
the Artistic Director and Executive Director. We balance curating a
season that is diverse, in-demand and of the highest artistic quality.
There is truly something for everyone this season including the top American orchestra (Chicago Symphony), a
dance company that has transcended the world of modern dance (Alvin Ailey) and some of the most brilliant artistic
minds of our time, like Yo-Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis to name a few. I hope to see you many times at Nebraskas

25 YEARS OF JAZZ
The rhythms and syncopation of jazz music, which first
rang out in the United States over a century ago, are at the
core of American music. Jazz gave rise to big band and
popular music, but it is still alive and swinging at the Lied,
which has featured legendary artists including Wynton
Marsalis, Doc Severinsen, B.B. King, the Count Basie
Orchestra and Sonny Rollins over the years. Wynton
Marsalis once said, Jazz music is the power of now.

25 YEARS OF POPULAR
A select number of artists define the decades and eras
in which they perform. Bernadette Peters once said,
Youve gotta be original, because if youre like someone
else, what do they need you for? There is no denying
that popular artists including Bernadette Peters, Boyz II

25 YEARS OF THEATER
The massive proscenium stage at the Lied Center has
housed countless theatrical productions over the past
25 years. Notable theater companies such as the Actors
Gang, the Acting Company, Aquila Theatre Company
and L.A. Theatre Works have mesmerized audiences
with some of the most beloved plays in history. All the
worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely
players, William Shakespeare writes in As You Like It.
Dramatizing the world for over two decades, the Lied
Center invites you to its stage to experience theater fit
for Shakespeare himself.

has written hundreds of songs, played thousands of
shows, captured the imaginations of legions of followers
and jammed with folkies, orchestras, Rock and Roll Hall

Her music is honest, provocative, experimental and often
fiercely political blending soul, funk, jazz, electronica
and spoken word. Throughout her 20 year career, the
Little Folksingers influence on fellow musicians and
