Component Verification (Sub) System Verification/Qualification

Always follow the safety guidelines when working with high power signals, optical light can damage your eyes
permanently! The best precaution is to never look into a Light source. When inspecting connectors, always
make sure that the other end of the cable is disconnected and the light source is switched off!

High quality reference cables are crucial for accurate measurements. Make sure the reference cable(s)
matches the size of the DUT (Device Under Test) and check on cleanness.

To eliminate high order modes in Multimode measurements, make a mandrel wrap (5 to 6 wraps around a rod,
the size of a pencil) in your reference cable. This will create a stable light beam.

Set the OPM to the corresponding wavelength of the transmitter or light source used and observe a stable
reading in dBm. This is an absolute power measurement and is the reference level for attenuation (insertion

loss) measurements, also known as “relative” power measurements.

For Loss measurements, two or a single reference cable(s) can be used. For a two reference cable loss
measurement method; connect the two reference cables together by means of a bulkhead adapter and connect
each other end to the transmitter (light source) and OPM and proceed following the instructions as outlined
above.

After observing a stable dBm reading, press the “REL” button on the OPM and observe a stable 0.00dB
reading. Disconnect the two reference cables and connect each end to the DUT; the insertion loss of the DUT
will be shown on the OPM LCD expressed in dB.

Decibel (dB) is the unit used to express relative

differences in signal strength. It is expressed as the
1. dBm = (10Log10(milliWatts)) base 10 logarithm of the ratio of the powers of two
signals. Signal amplitude can also be expressed in dB.
2. 1 mW = 0 dBm
Since power is proportional to the square of a signal's
dBm to Watts amplitude (for example, a power ratio of 100 is
equivalent to an amplitude ratio of 10), dB is expressed
as follows: dB = 20 log (A1/A2)
1. Watts = 10((dBm - 30)/10)
2. milliWatts = 10(dBm/10)
