Safety doors:
each enclosure is equipped with doors with locks,
for the safekeeping of the various components.
The doors have tamper-proof hinges,
that open outwards and anti-panic handles.

The input line room contains the MV input line panel,

equipped with an automatic general DC switch, protection
relay and relative auxiliaries, the transformer for auxiliary
power supply, the UPS and an optional night time power
factor correction bank.

The MV/LV transformer room contains an MV/LV transformer

with one or two secondaries and induced-draft cooling towers.
The transformer room a safety lock included.

The LV equipment room includes the Answer Drives GS converter system with MIRO function for
conversion system optimization even with low insolation levels.
There are also service cabinets, air conditioners, the UTF [fiscal counter] meters that measure the
electricity produced and the supervision system that monitors all system data from a remote location.

The IP54 rating guarantees the installation in any environmental conditions.

17

>> Cooling System:

efficiency optimisation <<
Proper operational temperature increases the service life of components (IGBTs, capacitors,
boards, etc.) and therefore the reliability of the system and the efficiency of the inverters
during the hottest periods, maintaining the power components (IGBTs) at a constant
temperature.
Air-cooling uses industrial air conditioners with a Free Cooling function.

> Pure Free Cooling: with low external air temperature the conditioner acts like a normal
ventilation system with external air exchange. The compressor is turned off.
> Assisted Free Cooling: with relatively low external air temperature the free cooling
operates yet if it is not low enough to keep the internal temperature at the required value,
the compressor comes on as required by the temperature.
> Cooling: the compressor is running. The system acts like a regular air conditioner.
The Free Cooling, function, by modulating the use of the compressor, ensures reduced
power consumption for enclosure cooling. Full power application occurs only when outside
temperatures are very high.
To ensure the continuos operation, the overall cooling power for the enclosure is oversized:
the system operates even if one of the air conditioners is out of service.
The free coolers, compared to regular ventilator fans, eliminate dust and reduce the level of
humidity in the air, being potential causes of electronic equipment malfunction.
Nidec ASI has also certified Answer Drive GS for use with water-cooling.
This cooling method improves dissipation.
The water-cooled enclosure, compared to the air-cooled version, is smaller and easier to
maintain (there are no filters to change and no liquids to top up).
An integrated water/water cooling control unit is available upon request for combined heat
and power systems.
18

19

MIRO FUNCTION

The MIRO function significantly increases the efficiency of the system, in particular under
conditions of partial insolation of the array and/or under poor weather conditions.
In fact, the MIRO enables the conversion units to be activated/deactivated according to
the power to be supplied with the objective of maintaining active only the units necessary
for conversion of the electricity coming from the PV array.
Thanks to the modularity of our approach, the conversion efficiency may be optimized by
activating just the minimum number of units required for the supply of the power coming
from the PV strings in large systems.

>> Aim for efficiency <<

In this manner, the active conversion units will work within their most efficient operational
range.

The graph illustrates the increased efficiency obtainable with the MIRO function.
The MIRO function with a Master-Slave rotation system balances the operation time of
all units over the long term, reducing wear and downtimes and prolonging the inverter's
life cycle.

ARTICS SMART ENERGY

ARTICS Smart Energy is the control platform by Nidec ASI for the intelligent management of
low/medium voltage micro-networks capable of integrating traditional residential and industrial
loads with the production of renewable energy managing variability without compromising the
quality of service.
The mode of operation known as grid-connected (the micro-network is connected to the
distribution grid at a single connection point) and island (the micro-network is disconnected
from the main grid) not only require their own independent monitoring and control system,
but also a power supply system created with smart devices, above all the inverters that input
the power to the grid.

>> Control at your fingertips <<

To be used within a micro-network, the inverters shall satisfy the following prerequisites, they
must:
> not produce EM interference that interfere with the network, especially when there are many
inverters connected
> contribute to the frequency and voltage stability of the network, managing the active and
reactive power produced depending on the load requirements
> maintain service even in the presence of strong network disturbances
> be equipped with a communications system suitable both for the transfer of the data
required for network control to a higher-level control system in order to receive the proper
commands

22

23

Nidec ASI has made its inverters smart by including advanced functions necessary for their
application within the ARTICS Smart Energy active energy management platform.
The system includes the following features:
Power limitation in conformity with the law EEG 6 on renewable energy and grid
safety management
To avoid short term overloads on the grid it is possible to
P
establish the maximum amount of power the inverter will
Pn
input into the grid by setting a parameter.
The maximum amount, variable from 0 to 100%, is defined
by the utility provider and is transmitted to the inverter by
way of serial port.

Reactive power is managed according to three parameters:

> The parameter that defines the minimum voltage variation
required, causing a reactive power variation.
> The parameter that establishes the reactive power variation
caused by a grid voltage variation during operation with
active power at a nominal level; the reactive power variation
is implemented after a time that may be set.
> The parameter that sets the minimum time that the voltage
variation must last to require that the correspondent
reactive power variation be activated.

Q [%]

Vrete

-0,31

* The reactive power value required must be taken into consideration when sizing the inverters.

Active power regulation according to the frequency

The inverter automatically reduces the active power input in the event of an increase in
frequency over the established value by a parameter with a
P% / Hz gradient of the power available.
Pnom
Frete [Hz]
The active power may be increased again only if the frequency
value returns below the parameter. The power gradient is set
with a parameter. This function contributes to the stabilization
of the grid frequency.
P%

Grid support by way of reactive power

To keep the mains voltage constant, inverters provide inductive or capacitive reactive power
to the grid. Three variations may occur:

Dynamic voltage control (FRT)

The dynamic network support, is the control set out to ensure grid stability in case of
sudden drops in voltage. This type of control is often indicated as Fault Ride Through.
Power plants that sustain the grid must, in case of a voltage
drop, avoid unintentional disconnection so as not to cause a
collapse of the grid. Reactive power input into the grid must
also contribute to its support. After recovery from a
malfunction, reactive power input must not be greater than
the input before the fault.

Q [%]

Vrete

ARTICS Smart Energy responds to the requisites set by MV directives and by the BDEW
directive.

a) Fixed value for reactive power*.

The utility provider defines the fixed value, set by way of a parameter, for reactive power.
If the reactive power is positive then it is of the inductive type, and when vice versa it is
capacitive. Some utility providers require the reference value to be set at tan.
The tan, value set by way of serial, is defined with a parameter in the -0.484 to +0.484
range corresponding to cos = -0.9 to +0.9.
b) Setpoint variable of reactive power according to the grid voltage Vgrid
The input of reactive power according to the network voltage is used to compensate the
slow voltage variations at the point of connection of the power plant to the grid.

1,5 - 6 mm2

Maximum output cable cross section

Up to 2x35 -120 mm2

Earth wire cross section

The current from each string is measured by way of a transducer and any faults are
immediately detected by the monitoring system with fast identification of any problem in
the panels.

Anti-inversion diodes
Output contact surge arrester intervention

NC [1,5 mm2]

Each box has overvoltage protection installed to protect the inverter from overvoltage peaks.

Output contact switch status

NC [1,5 mm2]

The output DC switch facilitates

maintenance operations on the
section with the system still
running in perfect safety.
Thanks to the double insulation
and the IP65 protection rating,
the box ensures the highest level
of protection both for the
operator and for the internal
equipment.
For rooftop installation, generally
the authorities require that the
string box be equipped with an
output DC switch with a remote
trip so as to respond to
heightened safety requirements.
This string box may be supplied with a DC switch equipped with a minimum voltage coil to
separate the PV generator from the inverter (Options are to be requested during the order)..

ENERGY METER

THE WEATHER STATION

>> For subsidized energy metering <<

>> Don't let the weather put you off <<

A static meter with LV connection is foreseen for measurement of subsidized electricity.

The meter may be mounted onto the Answer Drives GS cabinet or in a separate box.

The weather station is ideal for users who give great importance to the total analysis of performance even on the PV power generation side.

The meter is to be checked and certified with a cumulative certification +CT and VT
including tax duty. Supplied standard are: UTF, CT e VT proof terminal block for BT Cl 0.5
(with UTF certificate), GSM MODEM power supply, stylus antenna, terminal board and
wiring for connection to meter.

Weather conditions influence PV electricity production to a great degree, yet this does not
mean that efficiency cannot be optimized.

The meter, besides in situ reading, can acquire the impulses from one or more meters.

The Nidec ASI weather station uses a multi-function sensor, which, besides module insolation
and temperature data, also manages an ambient temperature sensor and an anemometer for
the purpose of making even more precise calculations on the operation of the PV system.

In systems with LV/MV transformers with two secondaries, two meters are required, one of
which will be the master acquiring the reading of the second so as to provide a single
electricity reading.

The data gathered by the station enable the calculation of the nominal power provided by the
current insolation and by the module temperatures and the comparison of this with the actual
power measured by the inverters. Significant downward shifts signal faulty system operation.
In this manner shaded areas, dirty panels and hard to find power reductions due, for
example, to the degradation of one of
the panels can be identified.

> ENEL Approved

> Activite energy accuracy in compliance with
EN50470-3: class C
> Conformity to Legislative Decree no. 22
dated 02/02/2007 (Implementation of the
MID Directive)
> Indirect insertion (by way of CT and VT)
> Rated Frequency 50/60 Hz
> Auxiliary power supply (48 - 240 V DC or 57
- 415 V AC auto-ranging)
> Auxiliary and impulse inputs and outputs in
complete configuration
> Communication ports 1 RS232 + 1 RS485
> CE Marking

48

The sensor output is in RS485 with the

Modbus protocol, particularly indicated
in applications where the sensors are far
from the data logger. Just make the
simple connection of the station, by way
of the Data Logger serial port, which will
then transmit the data received to a PC
or to an Internet site for further
processing.
For users with less weighty needs, the
station may be provided in a basic
version that will measure the insolation,
ambient temperature and module
temperatures.

THE PORTAL WEB

Nidec ASI web portal service is available to customers.

This service enables a remote check on PV systems via the Web with acquisition of data relative
to the plant.
The user accesses the site using a personal password ensuring a high level of confidentiality
and security for the data.
The user will be capable of checking on the efficiency of the system in terms of electricity
production and in terms of economic earnings whilst diagnostics on the entire plant may be
run at any moment during operation.

>> Data anywhere <<

Management service of any alarms warns staff in regard to the possibility of a malfunction
either by the web or SMS enabling a timely intervention on the plant.

The service interface is intuitive and makes data recovery easy.
