LEARNERS: age- 13/14 years; level- intermediate; number of learners - 14 AIMS: practicing acquired tenses and modal verbs can /could in reading and speaking. SKILLS: reading and speaking MATERIALS: Headway student's book, paper/notebooks, blackboard __________________________________________________________________________________ SET OF ACTIVITIES: 1. LEAD- IN - Hello! Can you read in English? What else can you do? this way a short revision of how to use can, comparison with could. In this lesson we are going to read an article....- Introduction (3 min) 1. WARM-UP - ex. 1, pg. 45 - students have to use the chart on pg. 45 and find someone who can cook, play tennis, ski, swim, play a musical instrument - then they refer to the class. They are required to use English. (5 min) 2. PRE-READING ACTIVITY - ex. 1, pg. 48 - What do you think will be the article about? Teacher goes through unknown words- Does anybody know what these words -poor, spend, shy, cubist -mean? ( 3 min) 3. READING ACTIVITY Individual work - each student sits with a partner and reads his article silently. One student reads the article A, while his neighbor reads the article B. (5 minutes) They underline new words, and things that seem most important or interesting for them. Here students can call the teacher and ask for explanation if they find the article difficult. 4. POST-READING ACTIVITY Group work - The class is divided into two groups. Students reading the article A move to one group and the rest reading the article B create another group. Here they answer the questions in ex. 3, pg. 48. Teacher moves between the groups and controls their activity. Keeps an eye on their answers. (10 min) Pair work - students return behind their desks and work with their partner. They refer to their partner about their 'super kid' using the answers from ex. 3 ( 5 min) 5. CONTROL ACTIVITY Whole class discussion- Did you like the article? What did you find interesting? ex. 5 pg. 48 - What is the same about the two super kids and what is different? Here the teacher checks comprehension and also can ask extra questions. (7min) 6. REVISION ACTIVITY - Role play - ex.6/48 - one student is a child genius and other students are journalist on a press conference asking questions. If not enough time - students prepare questions for the interview at home and activity is completed during the next lesson. (5 min) 7. CONCLUSION - concluding lesson, evaluating their activity, feedback. Today we have practiced how we use the modal verbs can/could and also how we use the past form of 'to be'. On our next lesson we will finish this unit and revise new vocabulary so for your HW read the one article which you haven't read today and look for the words you don't understand.
