how to use can, comparison with could. In this lesson we are going to read an article....- Introduction
(3 min)
1. WARM-UP - ex. 1, pg. 45 - students have to use the chart on pg. 45 and find someone who can
cook, play tennis, ski, swim, play a musical instrument - then they refer to the class. They are
required to use English. (5 min)
2. PRE-READING ACTIVITY - ex. 1, pg. 48 - What do you think will be the article about? Teacher
goes through unknown words- Does anybody know what these words -poor, spend, shy, cubist -mean?
( 3 min)
3. READING ACTIVITY
Individual work - each student sits with a partner and reads his article silently. One student reads the
article A, while his neighbor reads the article B. (5 minutes)
They underline new words, and things that seem most important or interesting for them.
Here students can call the teacher and ask for explanation if they find the article difficult.
4. POST-READING ACTIVITY
Group work - The class is divided into two groups. Students reading the article A move to one group
and the rest reading the article B create another group. Here they answer the questions in ex. 3, pg. 48.
Teacher moves between the groups and controls their activity. Keeps an eye on their answers. (10 min)
Pair work - students return behind their desks and work with their partner. They refer to their partner
about their 'super kid' using the answers from ex. 3 ( 5 min)
5. CONTROL ACTIVITY
Whole class discussion- Did you like the article? What did you find interesting? ex. 5 pg. 48 - What is
the same about the two super kids and what is different? Here the teacher checks comprehension and
also can ask extra questions. (7min)
6. REVISION ACTIVITY - Role play - ex.6/48 - one student is a child genius and other students are
journalist on a press conference asking questions. If not enough time - students prepare questions for
the interview at home and activity is completed during the next lesson. (5 min)
7. CONCLUSION - concluding lesson, evaluating their activity, feedback. Today we have practiced
how we use the modal verbs can/could and also how we use the past form of 'to be'. On our next

you haven't read today and look for the words you don't understand. (2 min)
