    twomillennia,tracingrecordtoatleastthetimeof
    theAchaemenidEmpirein500BCE.Thenation's
    officiallanguagesarePashtoandDari.Itismostlya
    tribalandruralsocietywithdifferentregionsofthe
    countryhavingtheirownnativelanguage.
    The regionhas mademajor contributions
    to the world's architecture. UNESCOhas
    acknowledged Afghanistan's role by
    declaring the Minaret of Jam and the
    Valley of Bamiyan, home of the famous
    Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban,
    WorldHeritageSites.

    Government
    ThepoliticsofAfghanistanconsistsofthecouncilof
    ministers, provincial governors and the national
    assembly,withapresidentservingastheheadofstate
    andcommanderinchiefoftheAfghanArmedForces.
    The nation is currently led by the Karzai
    administrationunder PresidentHamidKarzai whois
    backed by two vice presidents, Yunus Qanuni and
    Mohammad Karim Khalili. In the last decade the
    politics of Afghanistan have been influenced by
    NATOcountries,particularlytheUnitedStates,inan
    effort to stabilize and democratize the country. In
    2004,thenation'snewconstitutionwasadoptedand
    an executive president was elected. The following
    year a general election to choose parliamentarians
    tookplace.
