Chapter: Thick Cylinder I

1. A pipe of 400 mm internal diameter and 100 mm thickness contains a fluid at 8 MPa.
Find the maximum and minimum hoop stress across the section. Also sketch the
hoop stress and radial stress distribution across the section.
2. A steel cylinder is 160 mm ID and 320 mm OD. If it is subject to an internal pressure
of 150 MPa, determine the radial and tangential stress distributions and show the
results on a plot. Determine the maximum shear stress in the cylinder. Assume it has
closed ends.
3. A cylinder is 150 mm ID and 450 mm OD. The internal pressure is 160 MPa and the
external pressure is 80 MPa. Find the maximum radial and tangential stresses and
the maximum shear stress. The ends are closed.
4. Determine the radial and hoop stresses at all points in a thick-walled cylinder of
internal and external radii 76 mm and 152 mm respectively, when acted upon by
internal and external pressures of 124 MN/m2 and 46 MN/m2 respectively. Show by
means of a diagram how each stress varies over the thickness. For your distribution
you may calculate the hoop and radial stresses at radii 76, 100, 125 and 152 mm.
5. A thick cylinder of 150 mm inside diameter and 200 mm outside diameter is
subjected to an internal pressure of 15 MN/m2. Determine the value of the maximum
hoop stress set up in the cylinder walls.
6. A cylinder of 100 mm internal radius and 125 mm external radius is subjected to an
external pressure of 14bar. What will be the maximum stress set up in the cylinder?
7. The cylinder of Problem 6 is now subjected to an additional internal pressure of 200
bar. What will be the value of the maximum stress?
8. A steel thick cylinder of external diameter 150 mm has two strain gauges fixed
externally, one along the longitudinal axis and the other at right angles to read the
hoop strain. The cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 75 MN/m 2 and this
causes the following strains:
(a) Hoop gauge: 455 x 10-6 tensile;
(b) Longitudinal gauge: 124 x 10-6 tensile.
Find the internal diameter of the cylinder assuming that Youngs modulus for steel is
208 GN/m2 and Poissons ratio is 0.283.
9. A cylinder with closed ends has outer diameter D and a wall thickness t = 0.1D.
Determine the %age error involved in using thin wall cylinder theory to calculate the
maximum value of tangential stress and the maximum shear stress in the cylinder .
10.
A closed-end cylindrical pressure vessel constructed of carbon steel has a wall
thickness of 0.075 in, a diameter of 6 in, and a length of 30 in. What are the hoop
and axial stresses , z when the cylinder carries an internal pressure of 1500 psi?
What is the radial displacement r?
11.
The cylinder of a hydraulic ram is 254 mm internal diameter and 50 mm thick.
Find the maximum hoop stress in the material and the radial and hoop stress at a
point in the barrel 19 mm from the inner surface when the fluid pressure inside the
cylinder is 9.24 MN/m2.
12.
The piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder exerts an operating force of 10kN. The
friction due to piston packing and stuffing box is equivalent to 10% of the operating

force. The pressure in the cylinder is 10 MPa. The cylinder is made of cast iron FG 200
and the factor of safety is 5. Determine the diameter and thickness of the cylinder.
