WHY NO AIRPORT?
Manston airport lost money for fifteen years. It
was up for sale for 18 months. Nobody wanted
it. When it closed it was losing 10,000 a day.
The new owners have no plans for an airport.
TDC could try and force them to sell the site by
getting a Compulsory Purchase Order. But the
Council doesnt have the money to do this. Last
year, it looked for an indemnity partner to pick
up the CPO tab. Only one (American) company
was interested. After months of discussions, it
turned out that they didnt have the money either.
Even if they did, their plans were for a major
cargo hub which even aviation experts dont
believe would work. So, do you want more years
of failure but with guaranteed noise, pollution,
damage to health, to childrens cognitive abilities;
with decreased house values and the likelihood of
scheduled night flights? And all with no
passenger flights?
Manston has had years to prove itself both as a
passenger and cargo operation. It doesnt work.
Manstons 15 year attempt to be a
successful commercial airport is over.

TELL THE COUNCIL HOW YOU THINK THE

SITE SHOULD BE DEVELOPED
Thanet District Council (TDC) is writing Thanets Local
Plan. This will shape planning and development
decisions across Thanet for decades to come.
Manston airport closed last year. The airport wont
reopen. Tell your Council how you think the Manston
site should be developed.

MANSTONS FUTURE INVESTMENT AND JOBS

The new owners have NO plans to re-open the
airport. They have NO plans for a sprawling
housing estate. They want to:
attract lots of employers to the site so that
were not dependent on just one employer
develop community buildings and services
which are desperately needed
include some housing to produce a multi-user
site of jobs, services and homes together.
Theyre talking about 1bn of investment and
thousands of new jobs. They plan to develop the
largest business part in Kent - larger than their
development on the old Pfizer site at Sandwich.

They already have a tenant lined up who

would bring 300 jobs to the site - more than
twice the number of jobs the airport
supported.
Manston is a big brownfield site where
building even a relatively small number of
houses could avoid some of the squeezing in
of houses on plots of green land throughout
Thanet.

PLAN
The draft Local Plan, written months ago,
says the Council could earmark the site for
aviation and refers to the airport throughout.
This ignores the fact that the owners wont
re-open the airport. It ignores the fact that
the only company in the world that wanted to
run Manston as an airport cant afford to.
The problem with this wishful thinking about
aviation is that the Manston site will stay
empty until the Council comes to grips with
reality and accepts that the airport is not an
option. In the meantime, which could be
years and years, well have no investment in
the site, no businesses and no new jobs.
The airport dream is dead. Its time to make
more ambitious and realistic plans that will
bring thousands of jobs to Thanet, not just
the hundred or so that were at the old airport.

The airport has shut. Our Local Plan
cant depend on it re-opening. The
land should be allocated for mixed use
development for businesses, jobs and
community structure.
