Contrast the basic principles of recycle vs. reuse.

Apply these principles to an example of the

operations for a small municipal city Public Works department for a community of 12 14,000
citizens. What types of materials, wastes, and programs might be involved in your example?
The waste hierarchy principle gives a structure for waste management practices through
reduction; re-use; recycling. The waste management options of re-use and recycling differ as
follows:
Re-use
It forms the second waste management option of the waste hierarchy principle, and
requires that the item that is to be disposed be utilized again for the same or different purpose.
Recycling
It forms the third waste management option of the waste hierarchy principle. Contrary to
re-use, recycling enables the value of the waste to be recovered.
How re-use and recycling principles can be put to practice
As noted, these waste management options can be placed in an order known as the Waste
Management Hierarchy which reflects the relative manageability of each. These principles can
be applied in waste management operations for a small municipal city by the Public Works
department for a community of 12 14,000 citizens, whereby the waste will be managed as high
up the Waste Management Hierarchy as could be expected under the circumstances. All waste
disposal alternatives have some effect on the environment. Re-use principle, will first be applied
in the waste management operation within the municipal city, followed by the recovery
technique which will involve recycling of the waste materials.

In choosing what the most fitting disposal route is, environmental and monetary expenses as
well as profits in general need to be considered. This choice ought to be arrived at considering all
the expenses and effects connected with waste management, incorporating even those connected
waste transportation.
