MEET YA’ARA

PROJECT AHAVA - The Love Project

Name: Ya’ara
Age: 2 years old
Framework: Early Intervention Center
Diagnosis: Developmental Delay and Dysmorphic Features

Ya'ara is a wonderfully energetic little girl full of laughter and love. She is also gentle and
affectionate, and loves to play with her friends. This will be her second year at Beit Issie
Shapiro. Ya'ara has 4 older siblings and comes from a very warm and loving home. At first it
was difficult for her to separate from her mother and come to school, but now she loves to come
to school every day and has become very attached to her teachers and classmates. Ya'ara
communicates by using gestures, making sounds, and pointing to what she wants. She
understands basic instructions and can answer questions related to stories or situations. She
loves to be outdoors on the playground and especially loves hydrotherapy and all the pool
activities. Ya'ara is unable to stand or walk without support, but continues to make progress with
the help of a ‘special stander’ that helps to strengthen her muscles. Mealtime is a treat for
Ya’ara. She enjoys selecting her menu and feeds herself with her hands or a spoon.

Beit Issie Shapiro is the cutting edge premier facility in Israel working in the field of disabilities. For 30
years we have been changing the lives of children, adults, their families and community by developing
innovative services & promoting their inclusion in society. Our overall aim is to change the way people
perceive & relate to the special needs community. Built on three pillars: Therapeutic and Educational
Services; Social Change and Advocacy in the Community; and Development, Research and Training.
Our impact is felt not only in Israel but throughout the world. Many of the treatments and services used
at facilities globally have been researched and perfected at Beit Issie Shapiro. As well, many of those
who provide services today have been trained by the professionals at Beit Issie Shapiro. Three
outstanding examples of this are our hydrotherapy program (biggest in the world for Special Needs), our
Multi-Sensory room (Snoezelen) and Park “Chaverim” - where the King and Queen are in a wheelchair!
Our diverse activities impact 25,000 people annually, in Israel & abroad.
Our aim is simple, one of a just and accepting society.

at Beit Issie Shapiro, in Raanana, Israel. By sponsoring all or part of “your” child’s annual special education
and therapeutic program, you will personally make a significant impact on his/her quality of life.

Beit Issie Shapiro Believes….

 Every individual has the right to care, education and treatment within his or her community
 Parents of children with special needs have the right to raise their child at home
 The community has an obligation to provide services to make this option feasible
 Community education and awareness are necessary to ensure that our society is accepting
and respectful of people with special needs.

functional disorders.

Service Frameworks:

controlled multi-sensory treatment, speech therapy, occupational and physical therapy, hydrotherapy,
dental treatment, sport and recreation. Through research, student training and continuing education
programs, Beit Issie Shapiro is the flag-bearer in Israel for high quality care, education, and treatment!

Don’t just take our word for it. Harel Rush, a student at Pressman Academy in Los Angeles, was
inspired by watching a DVD of the special children at Beit Issie Shapiro in Ra’anana, Israel.
When it was over, he made a decision to help, and ultimately wrote the following for inclusion
on his Bar Mitzvah invitations: “Beit Issie Shapiro has given these kids and their families hope
for the future….”

Name: Lia
Age: 2 years old
Framework: Early Intervention Center
Diagnosis: Rett Syndrome

This is Lia's second year at Beit Issie Shapiro and she is in Haya’s class. Lia has Rett Syndrome,
a debilitating condition by which the child develops normally for her first year or two and then
begins to deteriorate, particularly in her speech and motor functioning. Beit Issie Shapiro’s has,
over the years, developed particular expertise in the care and education of girls with Rett
syndrome and we have found that intensive and prolonged treatment can minimize the
deterioration and maintain some function.

THE “SENSORY BOOK” PROJECT

For B’nai Mitzvah youth, Sunday school classes, day schools, religious schools and more…
by Marilyn Spiegel

The “Sensory Book” was inspired by a “Sensory Quilt” made by Ilana Spiegel
(granddaughter of Marilyn and Marty), for her Bat Mitzvah tzedakah project. Marilyn has
adapted the idea into a non-sewing-required book form, which can be easily made by a
student for a tzedakah project or by a Sunday school class, etc. The books are designed to
help develop visual, sensory, cognitive and communication skills. The books require only
cutting and ironing to assemble the various pages. A kit will be packaged with the
necessary materials and instructions, and the kits will be offered at a reasonable price (with
all profits benefiting Beit Issie Shapiro).
The books cover various subjects such as; numbers/counting, shapes/textures, holidays,
animals, daily functions/emotions, etc.
What a great way to create a hands-on Mitzvah gift that your new friend at Beit Issie
Shapiro needs and will cherish.
For more information, please contact Marilyn Spiegel at
laoffice@afobis.org or 323.938.9851.

Marilyn Spiegel was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1945. Her family has been very close friends with the
grandparents and parents of Aaron DeLowe (of blessed memory) for whom the Aaron DeLowe Early Intervention
Center at Beit Issie Shapiro is named. She and her husband, Marty, have been involved in the center for 25 years,
and Marty is Co-chair of the West Coast Chapter of American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro.
They have visited BIS and the Aaron DeLowe Center many times, and each time they have been
impressed and inspired by the amazing innovations and results they have seen.

In celebration of [Spring and Israeli Independence Day], the

[School Name here] has selected a Tzedakah project that we are
very excited about.

God has given the Jewish community 613 commandments

(Mitzvot) to live by (Wow!). Tzedakah is the Hebrew word for justice
and charity and is one of the Mitzvot (plural for mitzvah) we are
committed to perform as a Jewish community

The classes are proud to be donating their collected funds for [BIS Childs Name]
and Beit Issie Shapiro, a therapeutic facility in Israel serving children with developmental
disabilities. This Tzedakah project will continue throughout the year by culminating in a
“Cycles for Smiles” Trike-A-Thon fundraising event for the entire school.

A red parking meter will also be placed in the lobby for donations at any time. Included
in your white bags are Tzedakah boxes your children have created for collection for
pocket change at home and a brochure telling you all about Beit Issie Shapiro.

Our goal is to raise over $ for this “take-home” Tzedakah project. Please help us
fulfill our obligation as a Jewish community to help others. Let’s begin by teaching our kids that
even one small person can make a huge difference in someone else’s life.

Questions, please call: [Contact Names and Numbers Here].

Tzedakah Project
[Date Here]

The children of [School Name] have “adopted” Lia Adelman, a 4 year old Israeli
child, as part of our ongoing Tzedakah program. Lia has Rett Syndrome, a
debilitating condition by which she develops typically for her first year or two
and then begins to deteriorate, particularly in her speech and motor functioning.

Lia receives her treatments at Beit Issie Shapiro, the leading organization in
innovating and developing services for people with special needs in Israel. Over
the years, Beit Issie Shapiro has developed particular expertise in the care and
education of girls with Rett syndrome and have found that intensive and
prolonged treatment can minimize the deterioration and maintain some function.

On [Date], our preschool children will be participating in a Trike-A-Thon (or bike-

a-thon) for our spring tzedakah project. The money will be used to provide
therapeutic services for Lia. As you read through the information about Beit Issie
Shapiro, you will see that one year of basic care is $5000. It would be wonderful
if the families and friends of [School Name] could raise that for Lia as the
children participate in our trike-a-thon.

Your sponsorship of _______________________________ riding during our one

half hour trike-a-thon will go towards helping Lia.

Ruth is a lovely eight year old girl who came into the Special Education School three years ago. She has severe mental
retardation. Thanks to the intensive therapy she is receiving, Ruth’s vocabulary is growing and she now knows the names of
several objects. She understands instructions and participates in story-telling activities. It is very encouraging to hear her
speak in full sentences.

She enjoys television, understands stories and can busy herself at an activity independently. She enjoys paging through books
and looking at pictures together with her caregiver.

Her artwork is advancing. Previously she was only interested in creating circles and playing with round stickers. Now, however,
she draws lines and enjoys working together with her teacher.

It is heartwarming to see how well Ruth is benefiting from the rich stimulation of the Special Educational Center. Our aim
this year, is to further stimulate her communication, help her learn social skills and achieve greater independence.

I thank you in advance for your generosity.

Margie Ipp - Founder

Margie is the director of Temple Judea’s Early Childhood Center and has been for
the last 22 years. She over-sees a staff of 32. Margie began Cycles for Smiles not long after she visited
her friend and founder of Beit Issie Shapiro, Naomi Stuchiner in Israel. Margie believes that her
nursery school children give as much as they receive. Margie is the mother of four grown children.
.

Lucienne Adams
Lucienne is a working mother of three young children involved in Valley Beth Shalom (VBS). She
first became familiar with Beit Issie Shapiro on Mitzvah Day at VBS. When Lucienne saw the Beit
Issie Shapiro video, she knew that the organization would "own" her heart from then on! Lucienne
sees Cycles for Smiles as away of making a difference in the world in which we live.

Audrey Freedman-Habush
Audrey has been in Jewish Early Education for thirty years and a director for over twenty years.
Many, many years ago she had the opportunity to meet Naomi Stuchiner, Beit Issie Shapiro’s
founder, and was very touched and inspired by Naomi’s story. Naomi’s story of following her
dreams and Beit Issie Shapiro’s growth as it transformed the lives of so many families really
touched Audrey. To this day, Audrey continues to support BIS and all that it does for special
families through Cycles for Smiles at Valley Beth Shalom.

Sigalit Nechemia-Plafkin
A teacher and full time mom of two and… Following her kids’ lead to send weekly Tzedakah for a
child at Beit Issie, she took her family for a visit there to see how it all ticks . Her heart melted and
in a “God moment’ she knew that the kids there are so lucky to receive such top notch education
and treatments in a flag ship leading Israeli institution. Back at Stephen Wise Temple ECC she took
the lead in supporting this wonderful organization and as the Dalai Lama said: “Be the change you
want to see in this world”. How good it is to do things for BIS and count your daily blessings!

Carole Perl
Carole was working as the Early Childhood Director of Yavneh Hebrew Academy in Los Angeles
when she got involved with Beit Issie Shapiro. Being a mother of three children and a grandmother
of seven, Carole felt a strong connection to BIS and what the organization gives to children. Carole
is very passionate and committed to the success of Beit Issie Shapiro.

Mina Rush
Mina fell in love with Beit Issie Shapiro while working at The Pressman Academy Early Childhood
Center and planning the annual Cycles for Smiles. It is a passion that has extended to her husband and
four children. The entire family traveled to Israel for the joint Bar Mitzvah celebration of their son
Harel and Bar, a student from Beit Issie. The music, dancing and celebration that took place at Beit
Issie Shapiro that day, remain one of Mina's most joyous memories.

Bonnie Vorspan
Bonnie has been a preschool teacher and director at Kol Tikvah in Woodland Hills, where
she was introduced to Beit Issie Shapiro. She and her husband, who is a Rabbi, have three
children and two grandchildren (twins!). Bonnie enjoys Israeli folk dancing and quilting
of all kinds. Bonnie feels that, “it’s been a true pleasure to help BIS while encouraging
preschool children and their parents to gain a love of Israel and become aware of children
with special needs.”

I am your child.
I have many names
Yoni, Ilan, Sarah, Ahmed, Boris.

I am the different child.

I am not able to do things like other children.
My every step is an agony.
my world, confusion.

I struggle to reveal myself to you.

while my body does not do my bidding;
I lean precariously on legs that have no power,
hold things in hands with no control.

My “can’t do’s” are endless, wearying

And your eyes show grief, sorrow, pain.
I am your disappointment,
yet still a child
with a right to exist.
I want to be loved.

I will not be a mathematician

nor excel at language or art;
will make no momentous discoveries;
nor am I destined for great achievements.
I am but a flower in your garden
to grow if nurtured;
to enjoy simple pleasures.

I am the child who needs you to lead me through the world

to enrich my days with interest,
and people my life with gentleness:
to gift me with words of encouragement,
coax me through difficult steps
bring me song, dance, music,
romp with me in the sand and softly lapping waves,
bring sunshine to my smile.

I am your investment in humanity,

the soul and conscience of your world
I love you. Please love me.
