Material Master Content and Structure
The material master record contains all basic information of the products
a company purchases, produces, stores, and sells.
The material master record is organized in master data sets. The data
sets have a uniform data structure, which can be used for different types
of materials like raw materials, packaging materials, office materials..
Nothing will function in SAP R/3 without a material master record!

In the master data system (EP4) the views Basic Data I + II, the
classification, and the Additional Data ( e.g. EAN (European
Article Number), alternative Unit of Measurement etc.) will be
maintained only.
The distribution chain, plant, and company code dependent

views are to be created in the logistic system (EP1) and will be
maintained there.

What is a Material Number
Material Number
is the ID number of the material master record.
The material number concept distinguishes
between 9-/13-digit and 15-digit material numbers.
The 9-digit material number is assigned automatically by the system
(as a unique key in the system).
The 13-digit and 15-digit material number are assigned
by the system on the basis of the
accuracy code (GKSL) and packaging rules.

had and have its own nomenclature!
designations of PDM objects must be translated

every time before MMRs are transported between some systems!

Some MBR rules for FAG products

Definition: MBR = in German: Material Bezeichnungs- Regelwerk
in English: material designation rules
Most of the dots are replaced by hyphens in the designation.

Example:
6000.2RS
becomes
6000-2RS
Suffixes that have previously been attached without separator

now need a hyphen as separator.
Example:
NCF2926V
becomes
NCF2926-V
Some designation elements are now used as INA accuracies

according to Standard N003031 et seq., meaning that they are partly divided
using the hyphen - as separator and are placed at the end of the designation.
Example:
6013TB.P63
becomes
6013-TB-P6-C3

The order of the suffixes and the separator type are often changed,
since the accuracies and packing instructions are placed at the end
of the designation.
The packaging information, e.g. E200A is recorded as a separate characteristic
in the class system (# =hash key).
Example:

For the FAG articles, the short codes of components change

- Hypen:
Separator for optional feature codes and accuracy texts (GKB)

but only in the long text, otherwise the hyphen - is used.

but only in the case of rolling elements and roller & cage assemblies

It is not necessary to create a new GKSL for each follow-up sample requested by the
customer. The existing GKSL can continue to be used when the customer orders an
unchanged follow-up sample. On the other hand, a new GKSL must be created if
anything has changed with regard to FIT FORM FUNCTION of the product.

What Are the Most Important Rules for

the Material Description Rule Set (MBR)?
Rules for generation of the material description are defined
for each class, and stored in the system: view MBR.
The material description (material designation) is composed of
characteristic values and seperators;
e.g. separator "F-" and characteristic value "4711" for F-no. F-4711
On saving the material master record (MMR) of a special product,
the material description is generated automatically on the basis
of these rules. Otherwise there is a special field
for the material designation within the MBR view.
The system checks the uniqueness of the MMR against the still
existing ones in EP4. The uniqueness of a MMR is ensured via
F-number, Group Part Number, dot variant, optional feature codes
Note: before creating a new material in EP4
check its existence in the FAG production systems (Attention:Duplicate)!
