OdihamHampshires
flagship for Magna Carta
celebrations Article written by Jane Pratt.
Odiham is proud to have such an important association with Magna Carta 1215
and Simon de Montforts Parliament of 1265. For many this connection to important
events in history will come as a surprise.
The project is driven by The Odiham Society supported by InOdiham, Odiham
Parish Council, HCC, MagnaCarta800th and in close partnership with many local
associations, schools, the churches, shops and businesses. Our aim is to promote
the beautiful Parish and its historic heritage.
In May you will see flags flying along the in-coming roads to Odiham we hope
every household will join in and fly a flag. You will also see the Odiham flag,
designed by children from Mayhill Junior School to represent NE Hants district for
the parliamentary flag competition.
The magnificent Odiham Embroidery, depicting 800 years of local history from the
time of Magna Carta and reflecting the history of England as it was played out in our
parish, will be unveiled in the Library by the High Sheriff of Hampshire on 16th May.
Many of the events over the weekend of 22-25 May will centre round All Saints
Church, The Bury, the Canal and Odiham Castle. You could visit the Flower Festival in
the Church with displays created by local groups, or join in a parade led by King John
and peruse market stalls in the Bury while watching entertainers and re-enactors at
the Medieval Themed Day. The Magna, at Odiham Castle, a Living History village will
be brought to life by The Feudals, a group of experienced re-enactors who portray
early medieval life in Britain. You could join in with the Narrow Boat Festival at the
Canal Wharf, visit the Odiham Magna Carta art exhibition or participate in the Cider
and Ale Trail around local hostelries.

Volunteers wanted! Email getinvolved@odihammagnacarta.com

On 7th June you could walk, ride, canoe,

cycle or drive to Runnymede from Odiham,
get your Magna Carta passport stamped
and meet up for a picnic in the Runnymede
Pleasure Gardens. Listen to the church bells
at midday on 14th as they start a cascade
of ringing from Odiham to Wraysbury with
towers joining in along the way, followed
by family entertainment and tea at the
Libertea in The Bury at 3pm.

events and details of Odihams Magna Carta celebrations in 2015.

A note from Matt...

Unfortunately I have been forced to make a difficult decision. Due to
medical reasons, I am announcing my retirement from boxing. Its
been a great 13 years in the sport and I will continue to be involved in
boxing for the rest of my life. I have to say a huge thank you to everyone
locally who came to support me, followed my career, or showed any
interest whatsoever. Your support was invaluable. My future in boxing
is heading down the coaching route and I am working towards
obtaining my trainers license. I will be continuing running classes,
PT sessions and boxing lessons at my gym, and hopefully, now I can
dedicate more time to it, Matt Goddard Fitness will go from strength to
strength. Once again, thank you for your support and hope to see you
for a session soon!
Matt Goddard

PERSONAL TRAINING, Boxing Lessons or Group Sessions are now available

incredibly well equipped and I can guarantee you 100% of my time and focus

Meet the Maker

Marianne Dolan talks to The Odiham Oracle about A Space Of My Own, a
creative space in Hartley Wintney offering a range of classes to people of all
ages.

A Space of My Own is an interesting concept; how did the business come

about?
Back in 2010, when my twin daughters were small, I was presented with an
opportunity to start afresh. Ive always been crafty and I have training experience
so I started with a pre-school franchise and then added after-school clubs and
parties. Our house was soon bursting at the seams but I was lucky enough to
find a building tucked away behind the High Street in Hartley Wintney; that was
when I really got carried away! Its still just me but Im developing links with
other craftspeople like Renaissance Interiors and The Crafty Nomad, both of
whom run classes at A Space Of My Own.
What workshops and services do you offer?
Using as much recycled or re-purposed material as possible I offer: evening
classes for adults, pre-school classes, after-school & Saturday art clubs,
childrens parties and holiday classes, freestyle sessions, one-to-one tuition
and bespoke classes for groups.
What skills can people learn and whats popular?
Sewing and embroidery in various forms along with knitting and crochet are
probably the most popular. I also offer printing, painting and drawing, needle
and wet felting, decoupage, bookbinding, willow weaving, lampshade
making, up cycling and all sorts of other one-off creative activities.
What do you love about running
your own business?
I really enjoy the variety;
everything from accounts to yarn
ordering is my job so Im never
bored. Its also lovely seeing
students delight in their new
skills and its brilliant when their
creations turn out even better
than Id imagined! My main
challenge is resisting playing with
the stock when Im supposed to
be doing the filing!

THE CROWN in Old Basing

a taste of something special
When a press release landed in my inbox
announcing that The Crown in Old Basing had
been listed in the 2015 Good Food Guides Top
50 Pubs in the UK, my taste buds pricked with
excitement. Under the ownership of head chefs
Chris Barnes and Tom Wilson, The Crown has
been making quite a name for itself since it opened
in 2012. Local lads Chris and Tom started their
careers at Basingstoke College of Technology and
spent five years at the rather splendid Lainston
House Hotel, near Winchester; a noticeable
influence in the classy and well-executed tasting
menu we would sample that evening. On arrival
we were greeted by Fallon, the front of house
manager (for those who remember the hit 80s TV
show, yes her mother was a fan of Dynasty), who
showed us to our table in a cosy corner of the
candlelit dining room. To give us a complete taste
of The Crown Chris and Tom had prepared a
delectable nine course tasting menu. This evening
I was dining with Polly, who was beginning to think
that perhaps it wasnt the best week to start her
new year health and fitness regime with no carbs
after 6pm! Alas, she was going to have to grin and
bear it as a sharing platter promptly arrived laden
with soft homemade cheddar bread, flavoursome
rapeseed oil (move over olive) for dipping, root
vegetable crisps, and crispy pork rind with sweet
apple sauce. The Crown is passionate about using
local ingredients and suppliers. Our tasty starters
featured crispy breaded Tunworth, a flavoursome
Camembert-style cheese from just down the
road, and organic Stockbridge mushroom tart
with rosary goats cheese and picked red onions.

Warm homemade Scotch egg had a perfect yolky

ooze but the spicy homemade ketchup required
a tad more heat to suit the hot sauce aficionados
in us. Heat aside, it was ruddy delicious. My dish of
the evening had to be the house oaked smoked
Loch Duart salmon with potted shrimp terrine,
the saltiness of the capers offset by the sweetness
of shallot; I could probably eat this dish every day.
Sea Bream was soft and flaky, livened up with
delicate shavings of chorizo, caper butter, confit
potatoes and greens, while roast rump of English
lamb was pink, succulent and well seasoned,
served with crispy shoulder and celeriac, not one,
but two ways. Thankfully for the waistline, dessert
arrived as a simple spoonful of tangy, lemon
posset with mandarin jelly and a lightly spiced
ginger granola (Ill be back for a larger portion
next time), and a rich, velvety chocolate fondant
with boozy cherries and vanilla ice cream. All the
dishes we sampled are available at the pub and we
couldnt find fault with the quality or execution.

FOOD REVIEW

Positioned on the main thoroughfare, The Crown is at the heart of village life, pulsating with
culinary expertise and ingenuity. The residents must be rejoicing, after all, who doesnt love a
good local, where the food is exceptional and youre guaranteed to be greeted with a smile.

Yes, we know, Agincourt 1415, Waterloo 1815,

Add some
light to your
life!

Bi-folding doors that open out to

the rear of the property will let the
outside in to provide an abundance
of natural light whilst extending your
living space onto decking or patio in
warmer weather.

Deep eaves, too few windows, false

beams, low ceilings, overhanging
hedges or trees, an overbearing
neighbouring extension all these
can drastically reduce natural light
filtering through your home. Here
are some solutions that will help add
light to your home:

Removing partition walls to create a

more open-plan feel to the home is
a popular choice for many who dont
have the space to extend.

Replace a flat roof with pitched roof

and Velux windows this will make
an amazing difference, and it will add
character to your property.

Describe a typical session.

A patient can expect our therapists to take a full
case history, assessing general health, previous
conditions and existing symptoms. Following
this a thorough physical examination, including
neurological and orthopaedic tests, will be carried
out if necessary and once complete relevant
treatment will be given. We will discuss your
diagnosis, likely outcomes, time frame and give
you ways you can help speed up your recovery
at home.
What do you love about your work?
I love meeting new people from all walks of life
and the variety of different injuries that presents
in a clinic environment. I am a perfectionist and
take great pride and pleasure in treating not just
the injury, but looking at the underlying cause of
the problem and working towards preventing
reoccurrence. Every day is an exciting challenge
as you never know what injury is going to walk
through the door.

Year 2 Out and About in Odiham
In year 2 we started the year looking at Odiham, the place
where we live and go to school. We looked at a range of maps of
the area and identified the physical and human features. We
also compared Odiham with Basingstoke and thought about how
the two places are different and why. We really enjoyed our
walk to Odiham village where we could observe and record first
hand the historic buildings such as the stocks and the pest
house. We then applied all our new knowledge to write a poster
about Odiham to attract visitors.

In science we learnt about keeping fit and healthy. We enjoyed

conducting a survey to find out the most popular fruit
juice. We also drew and labelled healthy lunch boxes, discussed
the effect of exercise and made healthy pizzas.
