he NJIT Highlanders mens basketball team is 15-10 and in the midst of its best season since the programs transition to Division-I for the 2006-07 season. With four regular-season games remaining for the
nations lone independent, here are some interesting facts about both Highlander team and individual
accolades.
TEAM:
With one more win, NJIT will tie its program record for victories in a season (16-13 in 2012-13). The last
time the Highlanders won more than 16 in a single-season was during a Division-II season in 2002-03, in which
NJIT finished 18-12.
At 15-10, NJIT is tied with its all-time, high-water mark of five games above .500 (was 16-11 on March
2, 2013 during the 2012-13 season). The Highlanders havent been six above .500 since a Division-II season in
2002-03, when they went nine up at 18-9 on Feb. 22, 2003.
With a win Friday (vs. Albany), NJIT will tie its program-record, six-game winning streak set 2/1/112/19/11. The Highlanders current five-game winning streak ties their season-high (12/30/13-1/14/14) and is just
the third five-gamer in program history (also 2/6/13-3/2/13). The last time the program won more than six in a row
was during a Division-III season in 1994-95, when NJIT boasted a 22-game winning streak from 1/4/95-3/10/95
during a 28-2 campaign.
NJIT has won 10 of its last 11 games the best 11-game stretch during the Division-I era and since the
Division-III Highlanders 22-game winning streak in 1994-95. NJIT never had as successful a stretch during the
Division-II era (1997-98 through 2005-06).
NJIT has set an all-time, single-season record with 13 victories against Division-I opponents (previously 12, 2012-13).
NJIT is 9-1 (.900) at home with four home games remaining. The Highlanders have a chance to finish with
their best home winning percentage all-time (.800 at 13-2 in 2012-13) as well as a shot at their highest
home win total in a season (12 in 2012-13).
NJIT tied a program record for road victories in season with six (6-9); went 6-10 in 2013-14.
SIGNATURE WINS:
NJIT gets 86.6% (1520-of-1756) of its scoring players eligible to return next season.
NJIT ranks tied for 16th in the nation in Total 3-Point Field Goals (209).
NJIT ranks 55th in the nation in Field-Goal Percentage Defense, holding opponents to .397.
INDIVIDUAL STATS:
Sophomore Tim Coleman (Union, N.J.) is averaging 14.8 ppg over his last 13 games, shooting .605 FG (going from 6.8 ppg to 11.0 ppg).
STEPPING UP:
Since losing junior point guard Ky Howard to an ankle injury seven games ago (after 1/9 win over Yale):
JR Winfield Willis (Baltimore, Md.) is averaging 14.7 ppg (103) & shooting .542 from 3PT; was at 10.3 ppg
SO Tim Coleman is averaging 14.3 ppg (100) & shooting .583 (35-60); was at 9.7 ppg
SO Rob Ukawuba (E. Brunswick, N.J.) is averaging 10.9 ppg (76) & shooting .531 (26-49); was at 4.6 ppg
