The Cultural Criticism Trifles Play
The play Trifles was written by Susan Glaspell and its very short play. Susan Glaspell
had a very successful career as a writer of short fiction and most of her short fiction she wrote
from her own experience. Susan Glaspell mostly wrote about contemporary issues such as
gender, ethics, and dissent. According to Maillakais Mikes the end of the nineteenth century
saw the emergence of many female writers which dealt with issues similar to those that would
concern Glaspell The Susan Glaspells Trifles also reveals the information of the female issues
in our society and in her play she described the scene in a kitchen, and woman life revolves
around the lives of woman. According to me this play is really interesting but it is difficult
interpret for me. This play was described the cultural context of the woman and their life, and in
this play woman shows as a male dominance and ignorance by men and her feeling committed to
murdered her husband, Mr. Wright. Nowadays women are considering completely different ways
and they have equal right as men have in our society.
Moreover, according to Delahoyde Michael cultural criticism examines social,
economic, and political conditions that effect institutions and products such as literature and
questions traditional value hierarchies. Thus it scrutinizes the habitual privileging of race, class,
and gender, and also subverts the standard distinctions between "high art" and low. According
to todays culture in United States have equal right same as men, but somehow in somewhere
else in our culture still we have differences between women and men. According to my personal

view after the reading of Trifles play the woman is only considered in this paly as woman seems
like working and feeling loneliness in their life and women only considered as housewives and
women jobs only considered as around the house and raising children and take care of house. So,
I could say that this kind of reason might be considered for a committing murder of her husband
in this play. Glaspells mentioned in the play trifles that well women are used worrying trifles
and this clue reveals that women are worrying by men and ignorance by men and that shows that
women are not capable to do mens work.
In addition to that due to male dominance and ignorance womens ability and their
capability in our society women are more bounded by limitation and they cannot do whatever
they want to do in their life. When play trifles was written that time women have lots of
limitation to do work of men in the society. That time womens job in our society is the live
around house and take care of the children and cooking food and cleaning the house, and they
cannot compete the men jobs. However, in todays society the domination of men over women
problem is not completely resolve but this kind of problem we can see very less and very rarely
in our society. According to my opinion of trifles women have fewer opportunities than men and
so she is mentally tired with her life and committed crime and kills her husband.
According to play the example of male dominance is clearly seen when Mr. Henderson
asking Mrs. Hale about her friendship with the Mrs. Wrights. Mrs. Hale described the details of
farmers lifestyle. Mr. Henderson interrupts her to get answer. Mrs. Hale: I liked her all well
enough. Farmers wives have their hands full; Mr. Henderson and then country attorney reply
their answer with yes.
In conclusion, I cans say that after reading of trifle play its unclear for me to get answer
of why Mrs. Wright killed Mr. Wright. According to my opinion women did not have

opportunity as like men have and women are not compete the mens work and their ability in
past when this play was written. According to investigator of this play wasnt believed that
women are able to kill his husband and they are not able to believe that Mrs. Wright murdered
Mr. Wright. So I can say that also point that time women had not same opportunity like as men.
However, in present time most country have equal right for both women and men, but some in
some country and in our society still we have differentiate between women and me and they
ability and capability differentiate and make difference between them.
