Weldability

API 5L Pipe Grades

produced from PIPESTEELTM
This data sheet details the results of welding trials conducted on standard API 5L pipe grades to determine the suitability of commonly employed
welding processes to meet the requirements specified in Australian Standard AS2885 Part 2. The work was carried out in conjunction with the CRC
for Welded Structures and the APIA Research and Standards Committee.
Weldability
A critical requirement of linepipe is the ability of the alloy design to provide resistance to hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC). Australian
Standard AS2885.2 permits the use of internationally recognised laboratory test methods to confirm this capability. Extensive tests, over the
range of essential variables defined in WTIA Technical Note 1 "The Weldability of Steels" have demonstrated the performance of pipe produced
from PIPESTEELTM. The tests include the Rigid Restraint Cracking (RRC), the Welding Institute of Canada (WIC) test and some extreme field tests.
This is supported by the wide spread use of PIPESTEELTM products in the Australian pipeline industry. Test results and product performance can
be obtained by contacting BlueScope Steel.
