Lesson: The Olympic Games
Lesson aims: - to create a pleasant atmosphere;
- to create interest in the topic of Olympics;
- to verify Ss understanding of new vocabulary;
- to verify the Ss understanding of the text;
- to practise Ss understanding of the text by using the key words/vocabulary in other contexts;
- to motivate Ss to work in pairs/groups;

topic: The Olympic Games and asks
some questions about this subject.
The questions are:
1.Why are they called the Olympic
Games?
2.What are the aims of the Olympic
movement?
3.What do the five circles of the Olympic
flag represent?
4.What is the sport that brought the most
medals for Romania?
5. In which city will the next Summer
Olympic Games be held and when will it
happen?

answers to those questions
and I must encourage the
students who want to talk.

The teacher will ask a pupil to read the


first sentence of the text from page 140
and to fill in with the suitable word or
phrase from the list below the text. Other
pupils will have to fill in the other blanks.
The teacher will ask pupils if they think
that their colleagues answer was good.

If pupils make mistakes, the


teacher will correct them.

The next exercise will be the third

exercise from the same page. Pupils will
have to complete a chart for the modern
Games. They will read the sentences
about the ancient Games and will have to
formulate sentences about the same
aspect, but for the modern Games.
Pupils will have to write some arguments 5 min
about The Olympics, if the Games are
only a waste of money or if they really
promote something and if they believe
that the games are of any importance.
They may use any kind of style, formal,
informal or between them. They will have
to use some expressions from the Useful
language box .

blackboard and write their

seconds at it.
First hand-out will be the one in which
pupils will have to solve a multiple choice
quizz. Pupils will read aloud the
definitions and will choose the correct
one.
The next handout is a matching
quiz.Students will have to write the letter
of the word that best matches the
meaning.
The last hand-out will be one in which
pupils will have to write the name of the
sport knowing its definition and the first
two letters. Who finishes first will read
the names of the sports.
The teacher tells the students that they
learned interesting things about the
history of Olympics and about the
Olympic sports.
Assign homework.
