Oil firms have also been able to meet their 6.25 percent biofuel quota by
carrying forward the excess from the previous year. Since 2007, the industry
has exceeded its biofuels quota. In 2011, E10 gasoline containing 10
percent ethanol was also rolled out across Germany and sold quite poorly
in light of warnings about potential damage to certain engines, but

nonetheless the biofuels quota was met.

The B7 blend is the only feasible option for the biofuels sector at the moment. Since 2009, this market has
stagnated at around 2.3 million tons, and there is no sign of any change for the coming year. B10 and B30
containing 10 and 30 percent biofuels, respectively are currently being discussed, but it is unlikely that they
will be rolled out before 2013. And of course, the exaggerated concern about E10 will probably be repeated if
B10 and B30 are ever launched.
Internationally, E10 is a success story, and competition from Brazil and the US is strong, with Argentina and
the US also being major producers of biodiesel. The EU has responded by imposing a levy on fuel blends
containing more than 20 percent biofuel, but the market responded by producing B19. It seems that it is fairly
