Another setback for biofuels from algae

German Biofuels Association VDB says that only 60,000 tons of B100, 100 percent biodiesel, was
sold in 2011, only a fifth of the volume reached in 2010 and that year was also only a sixth of
the market volume in 2006.
In 2010, 290,000 tons of pure biodiesel was sold, compared to 1.9 million
tons in the record year of 2006. But as Renewables International reported,
the market for biofuels has shifted away from pure biofuels to a blend with
fossil fuels. One of the main changes that affected the market was the
expansion of the mineral oil tax to include biodiesel. At present, 18.6 cents
per liter is charged, but that figure is expected to rise to around 45 cents per
liter by 2013.

Oil firms have also been able to meet their 6.25 percent biofuel quota by
carrying forward the excess from the previous year. Since 2007, the industry
has exceeded its biofuels quota. In 2011, E10 gasoline containing 10
percent ethanol was also rolled out across Germany and sold quite poorly
in light of warnings about potential damage to certain engines, but
