ICE-BREAKER

Ss are asked to think of five words that describe them, and put
them on the DB, for example:

Henrique
Brazil
28
Teacher
Piano
Italian
-

Then, the other students have to discover what the words

represent by asking YES-NO questions. Everybody would be
asking questions simultaneously and the S who posts the
words answers the questions, for example:

John: Henrique, do you live in Brazil?

Henrique, Yes, John.
Peter: Henrique, are you Italian?
Henrique: No, Peter.
Mary: Henrique, do you speak Italian?
Henrique: Yes, Mary.
- After Ss discover all the pieces of information, the next S to write
his/her five words on the board writes a short paragraph describing
the previous person.
COLLABORATIVE ASPECTS OF THIS TASK
In this task, there is a lot of collaborative work because in order for
paragraphs to be written, one S has to come up with words, others
have to come up questions, and another one compiles the
information collected in the activity.
One of the advantages that this task promotes is the sense of duty
every time a paragraph is completed. Also, it draws out involvement
from all course participants, and in case some does not participate,
the activity can still be carried out.
Disadvantages of this task is that some students might not be
interested and reading everybodys questions and answers and
might as well prefer to write a paragraph introducing themselves
and if not everyone participates those who do might be frustrated.

Situation: I received an e-mail saying that I was not admitted for a

course for which I had applied.
To whom it may concern,
I have received your e-mail with information about my application
for this course. I do understand your reasons for rejecting it, and
hope to be considered in a future opportunity.
Yours faithfully,
Henrique Moura
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FACE-TO-FACE AND ONLINE
LEARNING
During the course we have seen many of the differences that exist
between face-to-face and online learning, some of which I would like
to array down:
ONLINE
The teacher can control the
group less.
Participants can do their tasks at
any time and usually do not
depend on anyone else.
It takes for time for discussions
to unfold.
Candidates only know a picture
of each other.
You may hear from other
candidates at any time.
Candidates work at different
times, different time zones.
Candidates can do many things
at the same time (participate in
the course, answer e-mails, look
after children).
Discussions are often longer,
more in-depth.
There might be
misunderstanding because of
failures in communication.

FACE-TO-FACE
The teacher can control the
group more.
Participants have to go to a place
at a pre-determined time and
also depend on other people.
Discussions happen immediately.
Candidates know each other,
how they look like, tone of voice,
mannerisms etc.
You only communicate with
others when at school.
Candidates work at the same
time.
Candidates are more focused
during study-time.
Discussions usually have a time
to start and finish.
It is easy to make yourself clear.
