MODERN TELECOMMUNICATIONS

IT-300 SECTION 001 & DL1

SPRING 2015
Dr. Riki Y. Morikawa

IT-300 Modern Telecommunications

This is an introductory course for the students of

IT/ISOM Major who wish to pursue a career in the
Telecommunications Industry. It gives a comprehensive
overview of the fundamentals and the future of the
telecommunications and related technologies, with
concepts on Wireless & Mobile Communications,
Satellites and Data Networks.
Prerequisites
IT 101 and (MATH 108 or MATH 113) and (MATH 112
or MATH 125)

Why study telecommunications?

Telecommunications is the transfer of information

(communications) from a transmitter to a receiver
across a distance (tele). Horak, p1
The transformation of society availability to share
information and transform it into knowledge

Imagine a world without electronic communications in general,

and telecommunications specifically. Even with computers, data,
information and knowledge would be local, and the ability to
collaborate, discover and innovate across boundaries of distance
and time would be greatly reduced.

Why study telecommunications?

The transformation of society for good and bad

Math
Logarithms
Trigonometry

Fundamental concepts in telecommunications are better

understood if you understand the formulas behind the
concept

E.g., from IT101:

Shannon-Hartley: C = B * log2(1+SNR)
Typical Carrier Signal Representation: c(t) = Ac * sin(2fct )
How to Study:

Read text, lecture slides and Tech Notes on the instructors website
Class lectures are critical
Complete all HW assignments
