Nature will not be fooled. She will not cede anything that she is not prepared to cede. We cant
copy the beauty of natures creations. We cant
reproduce the sensations that natural materials
transmit to us stones as works of art, wood, accompanied by profound, unique grains and colours, metals, which, when manually crafted, emanate a warmth whose presence was unsuspected,
and soft velvety leathers. Natural materials are
marvellously unique works which, with their flaws
and limits, will always vary and can never be perfectly reproduced. These works are beautiful at
birth and even more beautiful when the passing
years add to them the signs of wear and ageing.
Our production and design tasks all aim to seamlessly blend design practices and the expressive
potency of natural materials themselves a convergence of the intellectual value of creativeness
and the eloquence of the voice of nature. We care-

fully select our natural materials piece by piece.
We examine a block, log or trunk and then carefully process it, taking into account its imperfections and flaws, which we consider elements of
expression of truly extraordinary, unique value. In
order to exalt the incredible traits of the materials that we use, we apply finishes which, likewise,
are based on natural products. It is also vitally important for us that all procedures reflect Henges
respect for the environment.
Henges collections include not only various
woods, stones, hides and fabrics but also extraordinary materials such as steel mesh, baked and
decorated lava, processed in accordance with the
ancient traditions of Sicily, ceramic stoneware,
glass and, lastly, a vitally important material for
architects light. We process light using advanced technological resources.

bellezza di ci che essa crea, cos come non
possibile replicare le sensazioni che le materie
naturali sanno trasmetterci: pietre come opere
darte, legni con venature e colori irripetibili e profondi, metalli che, lavorati a mano, emanano un
calore insospettabile, pelli morbide e vellutate. Le
materie naturali sono opere meravigliose ed uniche, con le loro imperfezioni, i loro difetti ed i loro
limiti: ogni volta diverse ed inimitabili, belle da
nuove, ancora pi belle quando il passare degli
anni le coprono dei segni dellusura e del tempo.
Pensiamo e realizziamo prodotti in cui design e
forza espressiva delle materie naturali divengano
un tuttuno organico, frutto della commistione tra
il valore intellettuale della creativit e lintrinseca
eloquenza della natura. Le materie naturali che
scegliamo sono attentamente selezionate pezzo

per pezzo: ogni singolo blocco, ogni singolo tronco viene valutato e trattato con cura, nel rispetto
delle sue imperfezioni e dei suoi difetti, considerati quali elementi espressivi straordinari ed unici.
Le finiture sono anchesse realizzate con prodotti
naturali, al fine di valorizzare le incredibili caratteristiche delle materie. nostra cura, inoltre, far
s che il modus operandi di Henge nei confronti
dellambiente si ispiri sempre ai valori del rispetto
e della salvaguardia.
Nelle collezioni Henge: legni, pietre, pelli e tessuti, metalli, a cui si aggiungono materie eccezionali
come i tessuti in acciaio, la lava cotta decorata,
lavorata secondo le antiche tradizioni siciliane, il
gres ceramico, il vetro e infine la luce, materia
essenziale in architettura a cui ci siamo dedicati
con lapplicazione di tecnologie avanzate.

Materials: wood

Henge uses many wood typologies, including solid,

sliced and sawn woods. We use all traditional woods
and, in very many cases, our woods are heat-treated. Heat-treatment constitutes a recent, advanced,
hi-tech procedure capable of altering the woods
chemical structure and physical, mechanical and
biological properties. The process, whereby the colour is changed, and darkened in a uniform manner, impacts the full thickness of the material and
enhances the materials biological hardness, in turn
protecting the material against absorption of humidity while ensuring stability. The wood is therefore
suitable for outdoor use. We subject our acacia, oak,
eucalyptus and chestnut to various heat-treatment
and colouring procedures (ranging from medium to
black, for a matt finish in all cases), while conserving the grain and inimitable grain depths of natural
woods.

Materie: il legno
Swamp oak is a material of even greater worth.
It is a fossil wood of extraordinary elegance and
refinement with its striking natural smoky grey
colour. Swamp oak is an exceedingly rare material. We spare no effort in our search for swamp
oak throughout Europe, and we purchase whenever it becomes available. The colour qualities of
the plants must conform precisely with our specifications. We therefore cannot always guarantee
availability. This wood, the outcome of a process
of fossilization, reaches us after resting for hundreds and even thousands of years underground. A
masterpiece produced by the encounter between
nature and time, swamp oak may be considered a
chronicle of our planets history. It is a wood which,
by its very nature, does not lead to deforestation.

Tante sono le tipologie di legno che Henge utilizza:

masselli, tranciati e segati, tutte le essenze tradizionali e grande uso delle essenze termo-trattate,
ultima recente frontiera del legno naturale. Il procedimento di termo-trattamento un processo ad
alto contenuto tecnologico, in cui il legno, sottoposto ad un trattamento al calore, modifica la struttura chimica, variando le propriet fisiche, meccaniche e biologiche. In tal modo, il suo colore
cambia e acquisisce tonalit pi scure, uniformemente in tutto lo spessore del materiale, migliora la durezza biologica, si riduce lassorbimento
dellumidit aumentando la stabilit, rendendo
cos il legno adatto ad un utilizzo in esterno: si ottengono migliori propriet fisiche, una colorazione
medio scura o scura, sempre naturale e profonda
senza la necessit di correggerne il colore con tin-

te e coloranti. A questo trattamento sottoponiamo

acacia, rovere, eucalipto, castagno, con varie ricette di cottura, colorazioni dal medio fino al
nero, sempre opache, mantenendo la caratteristica naturale della venatura e lineguagliabile profondit del legno naturale.
Ancora pi prezioso il rovere di palude, legno
fossile, straordinariamente elegante e sofisticato con la sua particolare colorazione grigio fum
naturale. Rarissimo, e non sempre disponibile,
questo legno deriva dalla fossilizzazione di piante
recuperate dal sottosuolo dopo centinaia, migliaia
di anni di permanenza: un vero capolavoro della
natura e del tempo, oltre ad essere un legno che
non produce deforestazione.

Our approach to materials entails careful selection

and the adoption of original processing procedures.
Our aim is, at all times, to bring out each of the
potentials of materials in terms of their expressive
capacities, through applications which harness
these potentials and guide them toward the meanings which these materials shall acquire when
transformed into products for the home. This approach also takes in the metals we use. Metals are
only apparently cold and impersonal. They actually conserve great expressive potentials. We tend
to use black iron and brass. These metals have little to do with modern industrial procedures, which

seek perfection and which ignore the true nature
and personality, or character, of the materials being processed. Our approach is very different. The
expressive potentials of these materials lies, we
believe, in their typical imperfections. Thick slabs,
pipes, or simple or laminate sheets have all been
used for our homes since time immemorial. Henge
processes these materials by means of simple,
crafts-based methods, burnishing them according
to our own finishing recipe, thus bringing out the
extraordinary personalities, or characters, of each
of the materials we use.

ma che nascondono una grande forza. Siamo inclini a preferire lutilizzo di ferro nero ed ottone, metalli poco affini alle produzioni industriali moderne

che puntano alla ricerca di una perfezione che non

tiene conto del vero carattere e della personalit
propria della materia lavorata. Noi, viceversa, riteniamo che lincredibile potenza espressiva che
appartiene a questi materiali risieda proprio nella
loro caratteristica imperfezione. Lastre a grande
spessore, lamiere, tubolari o laminati semplici,
da sempre utilizzati nelle nostre case, lavorati da
Henge in modo semplice ed artigianale e bruniti
secondo la nostra ricetta di finitura assumono un
carattere ed una personalit straordinaria.

Materials: stone

Among the masterpieces of nature, stone is one

of the Earths great marvels. Stone is a permanent
feature in our lives, and always has been. In terms
of colour, grains, surface pattern and roughness
of texture, each block or slab is unique, extraordinarily beautiful and expressive. If the item is to
be fully exploited, great care and sensitivity are
required during handling. We seek out and select
very particular stones. In many cases, our stones
are of a kind that is rarely used, or they pose the
toughest challenges. Our approach differs greatly
from the kinds of approach industrial operators
would generally consider acceptable. We accept
the flaws, defects and difficulties encountered
both in securing supplies and in processing, and

we select the working recipe that will bring out
the extraordinary expressiveness of the material
we use. Our range of stones is truly vast. We use
the most common stones, but we are particularly keen on using unique, exclusive materials the
end-effects of which are derived from the material
itself together with the totally customized processing procedure. The results are peerless. Which
is our favourite stone? Cappuccino. We work the
Cappuccino stone according to our own recipe, entailing matt micro-sandblasting. Cappuccino is an
arabesqued grain stone. Its white-brown-grey colouring is hard to pin down, but decidedly elegant.
Cappuccino is a very tough challenge. It is also
uniquely Henge.

La pietra uno dei pi grandi capolavori della natura ed una presenza che accompagna da sempre la nostra vita. Colori, venature, disegno delle
superfici, rugosit: ogni blocco, ogni lastra sono
pezzi unici di straordinaria bellezza e forza espressiva che vanno maneggiati con una particolare sensibilit ed attenzione per essere valorizzati. Cerchiamo e selezioniamo pietre eccezionali, spesso
poco usate o difficilissime da trattare, scelte molto
distanti da ci che unindustria pu permettersi,
accettandone difetti, difficolt di approvvigionamento e di lavorazione, cercando la ricetta di lavorazione che valorizzi la straordinaria espressivit

naturale. La selezione che proponiamo vasta, da

pietre pi comuni e diffuse fino a scelte, quelle
che maggiormente amiamo, uniche ed esclusive,
caratterizzate da un effetto derivante dallinsieme
materia+ricetta di lavorazione assolutamente personale, dal risultato inimitabile. La nostra pietra
preferita? La pietra di Cappuccino, lavorata con
la nostra ricetta di finitura microsabbiata opaca,
pietra venata arabescata, con una colorazione
bianco-marrone-grigia indefinibile, elegantissima,
difficilissima da lavorare, unica Henge.

Every year, we select specific, exclusive leathers for

each of our collections. Some are soft and natural,
featuring the tiny flaws which we refuse to cover
up or coat. Our stone-wash leathers are aged
and endowed with nuanced finishes. Our extraordinary amazingly soft nubuck products are also a
noteworthy part of our repertoire, for which we
have received considerable praise. Like our range
of leathers, our colour range, too, is original and
personal. The colours are selected and developed
on the basis of the specific needs arising out of

our collections. The materials are applied manually on the basis of solutions inspired by our research activities and also by our overall approach
to the tasks at hand. These include raw cut, stitchings adopted in the leather goods sector, and reinterpretation of classic, traditional processes also
occasionally involving use of special machinery for
specific processing or stitching procedures.

pelli specifiche ed esclusive, da quelle naturali
morbide, con le piccole imperfezioni della materia
mai coperte o verniciate, alle pelli stone-wash,
invecchiate e sfumate in gradazione, oltre ai nostri straordinari ed apprezzatissimi nabuk dalleccezionale morbidezza. La gamma cromatica, cos
come la pelle, anchessa originale e personale,
scelta e sviluppata in funzione delle nostre speci-

fiche esigenze di collezione. Le lavorazioni di applicazione sono anchesse manuali, soluzioni nate
dalle nostre ricerche ed interpretazioni: taglio al
vivo, cuciture derivate dal mondo della pelletteria,
reinterpretazioni di lavorazioni classiche e tradizionali, che di volta in volta ci portano a dotarci
di macchine speciali, specifiche per quel tipo di
lavorazione o cucitura.

Special materials

Italy boasts many artisan concerns. Some consist

in small workshops which, over time, have developed unique, inimitable techniques and processes
born from the considerable talents and from the
ancient crafting skills handed down from one generation to the next, for which Italy is renowned
worldwide. These elements go into the products,
the semi-finished items and the processes of excellence that we seek out locally and apply to our
own range of products.
We see this in our metal meshes, which are stainless steel fabrics or textiles produced in a small
crafts workshop using stainless steel threads. The
fabric is very fine, soft and silky to the touch. Bur-

nished to a cobalt blue colour, the mesh is used
for layering the glass elements in our Q-Case product. This versatile, flexible burnished stainless
steel tweed mesh is pleasing to the touch and is
given a bronze colour for use in various Henge furniture components such as the tops of the X-Cage,
or the Y-Light lamp. Another extraordinary item is
our baked Etna lava, hand-decorated by the Made
a Mano crafts concern. We adopt old, traditional
Sicilian techniques to apply contemporary textures
to natural stone bases. These Italian excellences
share with us our approach to homemaking as well
as our ideals.

sviluppato tecniche e lavorazioni uniche ed irripetibili, frutto di un ingegno tipicamente italiano e

Queste danno vita a prodotti, semilavorati e lavorazioni di eccellenza che ricerchiamo nel nostro
territorio ed applichiamo ai nostri prodotti.
il caso dei tessuti metallici, veri e propri tessuti realizzati con filamenti in acciaio inox in un
piccolo laboratorio artigianale: il tessuto finissimo,
morbido e setoso al tatto, brunito in colore blu cobalto, utilizzato nella stratifica dei vetri della nostra Q-Case oppure la tessitura ad effetto tweed

dellacciaio inox brunito, trattato in colore bronzo,

duttile e flessibile, anchesso splendido al tatto,
che Henge utilizza per componenti dei mobili
come i tops del mobile X-Cage e per la lampada
Y-Light. Un altro esempio eccezionale la straordinaria lava cotta dellEtna, decorata a mano da
Made a Mano: texture contemporanee sono applicate a manufatti, su una base in pietra naturale,
realizzati secondo antiche tecniche della tradizione siciliana. Costituiscono, queste, eccellenze
del Made in Italy, affini al nostro modo di intendere la casa e allapproccio che Henge cerca ed
interpreta.

Experienced architects and interior designers know

that light plays a vital part in determining the success of any project. Light, an immaterial element,
is managed by us exactly as we manage any other
material. We work toward exalting lights effects
and expressive potential. Management of expressive potential, in the case of light, entails control
of emission, based on needs, both functional and
emotional, and control also of the quality and
quantity of the light emitted by a lighting device,
in such a manner that quality and effects can be
adjusted at will. Adjustment entails fairly complex
actions which can be managed through domotic
design of the buildings system as a whole. It was
with this prospect in mind that Henge and Massimo Castagna devised their Emotional Lighting
Control System. E.L.C.S. is a special, exclusive
technological solution based on specific electronic, computer science and lighting technique skills
enabling domotic management of each lighting
device. The single multi-emission lighting device
is electronically controlled according to various

scenarios, with fade-in and fade-out, management
by remote control device or smartphone, and implementations and updates downloadable from
the Internet, for a modern, innovative approach
to light management. The results are concretely
evident increased performance ratings or yield,
single action operations to simplify complex operations, limitation of settings and of application
costs, opportunities for maintaining efficiency and
for updating operations for our products on an ongoing basis real values generated by technology
which have emerged in other fields such as computer science and telephony. Now, with E.L.C.S.,
these values enter the field of decor and interiors.

E.L.C.S. Emotional lighting control system

Emotional Lighting Control System is a unique,

original, exclusive technology enabling domotic
management of individual lighting devices. It is
a hi-tech electronic control system for individual
lighting devices which enables simple, intuitive
control of the levels of emission of each source
to create various lighting combinations for lighting
scenarios that combine marked emotional impact
with high use value. When users press the room
switch, as it turns on, the lamp calls up its last
configuration. By selecting the program from the
remote control device or smartphone, users can
select the lighting scenario which is most appropriate for their functional, emotional or personal
needs. Users can also quite simply adjust the intensity of light for each scenario while maintaining the characteristics of light distribution. As with
turning on and off, each step occurs seamlessly
with the various light sources fading in and out as
they overlap.
No special systems or domotic units are required
for E.L.C.S. A lighting outlet and normal switches
will suffice. The electronic components are incorporated into the lamp, providing control of the
various light sources which interface with each
other. The interface is achieved via radio frequencies and via the remote control device with the
software which, on the basis of the settings stored
on the firmware, will provide the various lighting
solutions.
The app for smartphone use and firmware updates
shall be available for downloading from the Henge
Technology area of Henges web site. By connecting the remote control device to your computer (via
the USB port) you will be able to update lighting
scenarios or, on request, obtain special customized configurations or functions dedicated to your
projects. These actions can take place both before
and after installation of the lighting device.

Emotional Lighting Control System una tecnologia unica, originale ed esclusiva per la domotizzazione di singoli apparecchi di illuminazione. Un
sistema di controllo elettronico ad alta tecnologia,
applicato al singolo apparecchio di illuminazione,
permette di gestire, in modo semplice ed intuitivo,
i livelli di emissione delle singole sorgenti in differenti combinazioni luminose, dando vita a scenari
luminosi ad altissimo impatto emozionale e valore
duso. Premendo linterruttore di accensione della
stanza il Light Ring si accender, ricordando lultima configurazione scelta; selezionando il programma dal telecomando, o dallo smartphone, sar
possibile scegliere lo scenario luminoso pi adatto
alle necessit funzionali, emotive o personali del
momento e variarlo a piacere, oppure semplicemente variare lintensit di luce del singolo scenario, mantenendo le caratteristiche di diffusione
luminosa; ogni passaggio, cos come accensione e
spegnimento, avverranno in soluzione di continuit, agendo con dissolvenze incrociate tra le varie
sorgenti luminose.
Con E.L.C.S. non sono necessarie predisposizioni impiantistiche particolari o impianti domotici.

vostri progetti, intervenendo prima o dopo linstallazione dellapparecchio di illuminazione.

As a multi-source, multi emission (downward, upward, central emissions) lamp, Light Ring is particularly suitable for E.L.C.S. technology application. E.L.C.S. will enable nine lighting scenarios
for a marked variety of effects, both emotional
and functional. It goes without saying that various
mixes of led light will determine a great variety of
effects, including diffuse, mainly reflected, light
scenarios, or scenarios with the light mainly directed downward (for dining or study), or markedly
emotional scenographic solutions regulated by a
variety of recipes, with mainly horizontal lighting.
The environments light changes, and so does our
perception of the suspended rings, whose colours
will vary according to the configurations enabled,
creating lively, dynamic, emotional lighting effects
which are truly unique and inimitable.

Il Light Ring, per la sua natura di lampadario multisorgente luminosa e multiemissione (verso il basso, lalto e centrale), si presta in modo particolare
allapplicazione della tecnologia E.L.C.S., che permette di determinare nove scenari luminosi molto
differenti tra loro, sia sotto il profilo emotivo che
funzionale. evidente come la diversa miscela di
illuminamento dei led, nelle varie emissioni, possa dare risultati estremamente diversi: scenari a
luce diffusa, prevalentemente riflessa, oppure altri
a luce concentrata prevalentemente verso il basso,
per luso pranzo o studio, fino ad arrivare a quelli
emozionali, con diverse ricette di illuminamento,
a luce prevalentemente orizzontale, di alto valore
scenografico.
Cambia la luce dellambiente, cos come cambia
la percezione degli anelli sospesi che, nelle varie
configurazioni, assumer presenza e colorazione
differenti, un effetto di luce viva, dinamico ed emozionale assolutamente unico ed ineguagliabile.

applies to the Tubular Light lamp, the resulting
perception of light and of the interaction between
light and the environment is quite different. It
is, however, equally intense and emotional. Each
lighting tube is capable of emitting light upward or
downward. The light is always more concentrated
than we find for Light Ring. The levels of distribution vary according to the diameter of the tubes
installed.
Here too, the nine lighting scenarios vary among
themselves. The scenarios were designed with
three typologies in mind: diffuse light, concentrated light (dining and study), and emotional
light. The light is clear and intense and the effect of difference, on looking upon the lamp, is
even more marked. The idea is to emphasise the
play between shade and light which underscores a
sense of intensity and drama, for remarkably striking scenographic effects.

Il medesimo approccio del Light Ring applicato al lampadario Tubular Light, con un risultato
estremamente diverso nella percezione della luce
e nella sua interazione con lambiente, ma altrettanto intenso ed emozionale. Ogni tubo luminoso
possiede unemissione di luce verso lalto e verso
il basso, sempre pi concentrata rispetto al Light
Ring, con livelli di diffusione differenti in base al
diametro dei tubi installati.
Anche in questo caso, i nove scenari luminosi hanno caratteristiche diverse tra loro e sono pensati
nelle tre tipologie: luce diffusa, luce concentrata
per uso pranzo o studio e luce emozionale. La luce
chiara ed intensa e leffetto della differenza, nella visione del lampadario, ancora pi marcato,
giocando su un rapporto di ombra-luce intenso e
drammatico ad altissimo valore scenografico.

Vases made of porcelain stoneware fired at 1250 C. Each

one is individually hand-turned and the finish is made
applying oxide and natural wax which are mixed and manually
applied. Every piece and its finish is different, a one-of-a-kind
work of art because they are all made entirely by hand.

Vasi realizzati in grs cotto a 1250 C. La foggiatura viene fatta

manualmente al tornio e la finitura della superficie realizzata attraverso lapplicazione di ossidi e cere naturali mescolate
assieme e applicate a mano.
Questi pezzi sono da considerarsi unici, in quanto la forma,
essendo realizzata a mano, ed anche la finitura della superficie
sono diverse.
