Where to eat

1. Breakfast
Le Pain quotidien
16a rue Antoine Dansaert - 11 rue des Sablons - 124 avenue Louise - plus 6 other
venues in Brussels (+32 2 502 23;).
In 1990 chef Alain Coument set up his own bakery, with a long, scrubbed wooden
table where customers could sit and sample bread and lots of home-made jams,
pastries, quiches, salads and sandwiches. The concept has spread across
Brussels and the world, and the cafs are excellent for breakfast. All shops/cafs
open from around 7am to 7pm.

2. Lunch and dinner

Brussels is the home of mussels. Here are some of the best restaurants to find
them:
Restaurant Francois
2 Quai aux Briques, Brussels (+ 32 2 511 6089).
Dating back to 1922, this brightly-lit restaurant has its own fish shop next door.
Dishes include starters of moules parques (raw mussels) as well as traditional
casseroles of mussels.
La Belle Maraichere
11 Place Sainte Cathrine, Brussels (+32 2 512 9759).
One of Brussels' best fish restaurants, this 19th-century-style, wood-paneled
bistro, serves simple mussel dishes. Open Fri-Tue.
Scheltema
7 rue des Domincains, Brussels (+32 2 512 2084).
An elegant brasserie off the Grand' Place, open Mon-Sat.
Belgium Taste (Atomium Restaurant)

Atomiumsquare 1, 1020 Brussels (+32 2 479 58 50)

The Atomium restaurant is without a doubt the most spectacular part of the
Atomium. Not only the view is breathtaking but also the food is great.
Au Vieux Bruxelles
35 rue St Boniface, Brussels (+32 2 503 3111).
This is one of the best places to have mussels and chips in a quaint caf dating
from 1882, in the heart of Ixelles. Open Tue-Sun.

3. The Belgian cuisine (with recipes click on the link)

French fries with mussels
There are different kind of ways to prepare mussels. Popular
variations are the classical way with celery and onion,
mussels with white wine, beer, Provencal sauce, Instead of mayonnaise you
can use the special mussels sauce. The sauce contains a little bit of mustard.

Chocolates
As you all know Belgium is the place to be to taste and buy chocolates. But
before I tell you about the best places to buy them, I would like to tell you
something about its history. Did you know that chocolate was first consumed
in the Maya and Aztec culture? In the 16th century chocolate was shipped to
Spain by a Spanish conquistador and became immediately popular as a drink.
In the beginning of the 17th century chocolate was introduced at the French
court. Chocolate was a luxurious product and could only be served in
renowned surroundings. Somewhere around the beginning of the 20th
century Jean Neuhaus opens up a pharmacy in Brussels and covers his

medicines in a layer of chocolate to make them more palatable. Afterwards

Neuhauss grandson got the idea to replace the medicine with fresh cream.
Thats how the praline made its entrance

But now the most important information: where to

buy these delicious chocolates? You can find
Neuhaus at Brussels Airport in the A and B terminal but also in the center of
Brussels for example at the Grand Place. Other big names are Godiva,
Guylian, and Leonidas.
Gentse waterzooi
Waterzooi is a Belgian stew and originates in Ghent. The original
dish is often made of fish but today chicken is more common.
The stew contains leek, potatoes, celery and onion.

Asparagus Flemish style

The asparagus can vary in color depending the duration of being exposed to
sunlight. The duration defines the color and taste of
the vegetable. White asparagus have a mild taste and
green are more seasoned in both taste and smell. A
famous Belgian recipe is
asparagus with hard boiled
eggs and butter sauce.

In my opinion theyre delicious when you serve them with steak and
croquettes.

Brussels sprouts
One of the most well-known Flemish vegetables are the
Brussels sprouts. Brussels sprouts are small, green
cabbages and contain lots of anticancer compounds.

Brussels waffle
Brussels waffle or Belgian waffle, as its called in
the U.S., was strongly promoted at the New York
Worlds Fair in 1964 and at Expo 2005 in Japan.
The waffle has a big, rectangular shape with a
grid pattern and has a light structure. Belgian
people like to eat it warm with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce or
fruit and powdered sugar.

Witlof with ham

Another delicious Belgian dish is witlof with ham and cheese sauce. Finish the
recipe by strawing a mix of breadcrumbs and cheese on top of the dish before
putting it in the oven. Youll get a nice crispy crust.
