Brothers Landen, 5, and Brylen Botts, 2, decorate some Valentines Day cards at the Moorestown Mall during the Just Mom & Me

Manuel Manny Delgado may be

the newest member on the
Moorestown Township Council, but
he has already made his mark in
Moorestown history by being the
first
Hispanic

in Moorestown.
However, he said
he doesnt really

that often. He
feels
in
Moorestown,
there are many

people of different ethnicities and has never felt it
to be a big deal.
Surprisingly, more people know
and have congratulated me in Camden, Delgado said.
According to Delgado, those who
live in lower-income areas and know
those struggles appreciate it more. It

the case for Moorestown Friends

Gelernt knew he wanted to
make a contribution to scientific
progress. After an internship
with a cardiologists office, Gelernt became interested in heart
disease and how it develops. After
some research, he came up with
an experiment and applied for a
research grant.
In January, it was announced
that Gelernt received the 2015
Cogito Research Award from
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for his experiment. He is
one of only 10 students in the

which includes a grant to fund

Kids to learn how to deal with police

New proposal would make it a requirement in school, and its a good idea

heres a new law being proposed in the Assembly that

would require New Jersey
schools to teach students how they
should interact with police officers.
The bill is being touted as a way to protect both kids and cops, in the wake of
highly-publicized police shootings
such as Michael Brown in Missouri.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, one of
the bills sponsors, had some poignant
words about why he thought the bill is
needed:
Kids have to learn how to behave
when theyre being investigated or
talked to, because they could put themselves in jeopardy. Its also a good effort
to protect the police. Kids have to recognize their authority when theyre
being questioned and how to conduct
themselves.

Your thoughts
What do you think of the proposed law
that would require schools to teach students how they should interact with police
officers? Share your thoughts on this and
other topics through a letter to the editor.

Caputos words might seem like he is

putting the blame on the deceased kids
in cases such as Browns. However, he
says hes not placing blame on anyone,
rather just seeking to educate kids on
situations they may come across that
no one speaks of: When a kid jumps
out of a car, he may appear to be
threatening but hes not he just may
not understand what those protocols
are.
Its a shame that there have been
tragic situations such as those in Mis-

souri that have forced us to propose

laws such as this to protect kids and
cops from dangerous situations. But
thats the world we live in.
Ultimately, though, we support any
program that educates our students
about life. School isnt just about math,
science, English and other traditional subjects. Its also about preparing
kids for the real world, and dealing
with police, and protection, is real
world stuff.
Education programs with police officers in schools is nothing new
D.A.R.E has been around for awhile.
This proposed law, which we support,
is just another step in the right direction to teach students how they can be
better citizens, and how they can better interact with the men and women
who are tasked with their protection.

Council talks parking meters, new website

Carew: Meters will be replaced in two phases, website to launch in May
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Last week at the Moorestown Township
Council meeting, township manager Scott
Carew said the replacement of parking meters in town will most likely take place in
two phases, and the new township website
should be ready to be launched in May.
The first phase is to replace the parking
meters along Main Street, and the second
phase is to get new meters in the Second
Street parking lot, also known as the Peter
Pan Parking lot.
For Main Street, there is a possibility
that kiosks could replace the individual
parking meters. With the kiosks, the idea is
that each parking space would be numbered and kiosks would be placed within a

reasonable distance from parking spaces.

The idea is to have it that, no matter
where you park, there is a kiosk on the way
you need to walk, Carew said.
Kiosks also allow police to use handheld
devices to hand out tickets based on a
color-coded system. Six to 10 kiosks could
replace the towns 80 parking meters.
The second phase in the Peter Pan parking lot would use the same system as the
Main Street in consideration. However,
there is some concern with employees having to pay for parking, which the township
is still looking into, and is thinking about
adding designated employee parking spots
in the area.
Carew also announced the new township website would be ready to be launched
in May. He said not only will it be aestheti-

cally pleasing, but it will be efficient and

easy to use.
Its going to be a fantastic website,
Carew said.
He also said the township was exploring
the possibility of using a Computerized
Maintenance Management System. The
township would choose a type of system
and township employees must be trained
in the use of the system. According to
Carew, a CMMS would allow the township
to keep close track of all of its assets, keep
on track for schedules and make large organizations efficient. He feels the organization is large enough to utilize these systems.

Sailams are true high school sweethearts

We are Vivek and Smruti Sailam and this is our sweetheart
story.
My wife and I met in 1990 at a
Princeton review SAT class in
Freehold.
Our first date was at sbarro
restaurant in Times Square.
Our trips to Hawaii and Nice
are the most romantic things we
have done.
Our longevity, cohesiveness
and love for our family make us
standout; we also look essentially
the same as we did in 1990.
Patience, compromise and respect are our advice.
We have been together for 25
years and married for 14. We have
been to two proms together.
We are true high school sweethearts.

Krippels celebrating 30 years of wedded bliss

My name is Barbara Krippel,
and my husband Frank and I are
leaving in a few weeks on a trip to
celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on March 16.
In todays standards, 30 years of
a happy marriage is quite unique,
but even more unique is that we
have been together since I was 13
years old! No breakups, engaged
at 18 and I was 20 when we married.
Frank and I met when our parents had seasonal campsites at a
campground in Jackson. A group
of us had season passes to nearby
Six Flags and while exiting the
park, waiting for parents to pick
us up, he "asked me out." I was
from North Jersey and he was
from South Jersey, so we only saw
each other on weekends until he
was old enough to drive to visit
me. The long distance relationship continued until we married
and settled into our first and current home here in Moorestown.
We have raised our son and
daughter here and couldnt be
happier with the life we have

MTC receives Excellence In Acting award

The non-profit Moorestown
Theater Company received a
Freddie G Excellence In Acting
Award for its full cast at the 2015
Junior Theater Festival, the
worlds largest musical theater
festival for children, which took
place Jan. 16 through 18 at the
Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta,
Ga.
This marked the second
straight festival at which MTC received this coveted award!
MTCs 21 students, ages 7 to 17,
were cheered on by a group of 33
staff and family members as they
performed a 15-minute version of
Disneys My Son Pinocchio, Jr.
in front of two adjudicators:
Tony-nominated composer Justin
Paul and iTheatrics VP of publishing, resident choreographer,
and former Broadway performer
Steven G. Kennedy.
Produced by NYCs Junior Theater Group in partnership with
iTheatrics, the JTF is the worlds
largest festival celebrating young

people and the transformative

power of musical theater. This
years festival had 4,500 students,
teachers and family members
from 26 states and the District of
Columbia, as well as companies
from South Korea and Australia.
There were a record-high 101 theater companies/schools participating.
MTC, which received one acting award in 2013 and three acting
awards in 2014, also received one
individual acting award this year
in addition to the cast acting
award, bringing its total to six
acting awards at the last three festivals.
MTCs second Freddie G
Award at this years festival went
to Jordan Budney, 11, of Cherry
Hill in the form of a Broadway
Junior Slam Acting Award. The
Broadway Junior Slam is a theatrical challenge in which students and teachers who dont
know each other must stage and
perform a song from a musical in

one hour.
MTC producing artistic director and Disneys My Son Pinocchio, Jr. director Mark Morgan
accepted the Excellence In
Acting Award for the entire
cast for its 15-minute performance.
Just attending the Junior Theater Festival is a wonderful experience for our students, even if
we dont win any awards, Morgan said. But to win two awards,
including an Excellence In Acting Award for a second year in a
row, is amazing, and it shows the
caliber of actors that perform
with Moorestown Theater Company!
MTC was the only group of the
eight in its pod to condense its
entire show to 15 minutes, as opposed to just performing various
songs from a show, which Morgan
said was done to highlight as
many cast members as possible,
instead of just a few lead performers.

research, which is also his MFS
Capstone Project, will be supervised by Science and Engineering
Department chair Barb Kreider.
Also, Gelernt will blog about his
progress on Cogito.org and submit a final report.
Gelernt found out about the
Cogito Research Award from his
mother. At first, he didnt think
much of it, but after his internship, he became very interested
in the heart and looking at it at
the molecular level. After doing
research regarding heart disease,
he came up with an experiment
and then submitted it to Cogito.
Gelernts proposal is called
Effects of PON1 and ApoA-I
Variants on Antioxidant Ability
of HDL.
Gelernt will test variants of
high-density lipoprotein proteins,
named in his proposal title, to determine which are most effective
in preventing low-density lipoprotein oxidation. HDL is known as
good cholesterol in part because it contains proteins that
prevent LDL, or bad cholesterol, from oxidizing. When LDL
oxidizes, it forms plaque in arteries that restricts blood flow and
can lead to a heart attack or
stroke. The knowledge he gains
from this experiment he hopes
can be used in blood tests that
will enable doctors to assess individual patients risk of developing heart disease.
The hardest part for Gelernt
was crafting the application. He
said it can be very difficult to convey a complex subject in just a
few paragraphs. He had to work
hard to make what he wanted to
do clear and to convey what he

learned.
His favorite part, however, was
gaining all the knowledge he did.
He said doing the background research was fun, but the afterward
was the most rewarding.
Having acquired the knowledge and understanding what
goes on inside the body, to me,
that is a very satisfying feeling,
Gelernt said.
When he found out he was receiving the award for his experiment, Gelernt was excited. He
hopes his work will help have an
impact in scientific research.
I was excited. I was humbled
that I was selected to conduct research. I have always looked at
science and its applications. I
wanted to be a part of scientific
progress and have an impact, and
felt this was a great opportunity
to be a part of this, Gelernt said.

Gelernt wont be starting his

experiment until the summer.
At the moment, Gelernts aspiration is to continue in biomedical research, some day run his
own lab, conduct experiments
and be a part of scientific
progress in some fashion.
Though that is not necessarily
set, he would like to continue
down the biomedical research
path.
First awarded in 2014, the CTY
Cogito Research Awards are part
of Cogito.orgs mission to foster
the development of promising
young scientists and create a
community that includes peers as
well as working scientists and
mathematicians. Cogito features
science, engineering, math and
technology news as well as discussion forums. Find out more at

Schools brought Delgado to township

SCHOOLS
Continued from page 1
is a big deal being the first of Hispanic heritage and they felt he
had moved up in the world. Delgado said people were saying its
nice seeing someone who grew up
in a lower-income neighborhood
is able to contribute.
Delgado came from humble beginnings.
Delgado grew up in Philadelphia, going to Roman Catholic
High School and Temple University for his undergraduate degree
in Spanish linguistics and Spanish and medieval text. All his free
time wasnt spent in extracurricular activities; instead he was
working full-time while also
going to school. He paid his way
through undergraduate school,
and when he went for his Ph.D.,
also at Temple, he was teaching.
However, he didnt end up finishing his Ph.D. When he and his
wife Amy had their second child,
the decision was made to work
full time as well as move to New
Jersey.
Delgado did community development work in Camden and

Philadelphia for years and works

in Rutgers Camden in its Community Leadership Center helping
redevelop charter schools.
When deciding on where to
move, Delgado said they ultimately chose Moorestown for one reason schools. In Philadelphia,
private schools are expensive and
they knew they couldnt afford it,
so they decided Moorestown,
with its quality schools and lower
tax structure, would be the place
to move.
A nine-year resident, Delgados
favorite parts of Moorestown are
the people and families. He said
he really likes how the town connections and relationships are
made through families and professions.
I really enjoy that. We have
great friends in town. Its a completely different experience and I
am happy and fortunate my kids
are growing up in this town, Delgado said.
Delgado is a very big family
man. Everything he does is with
and for his family. Having four
kids between the ages of 5 and 12,
it is understandable.
Its all about them, Delgado
said. They take up a majority of
my time, thankfully. We have a lot

of fun with it.

Weekends are filled with driving to sports events, Delgado
coaching a few of them. He and
his family are big into sports,
watching them together as a family.
Well watch anything sports
wise. Were sad football season is
over, so we cant wait for baseball
season to start, Delgado said.
Delgados typical day begins
and ends with family. He gets up
and helps get the kids off to
school, then he is off to work in
Camden at Rutgers University
until about 6 p.m., when he comes
home to help with home stuff,
homework, practices or games,
and then goes to bed by 10 p.m. or
11 p.m.
He said his favorite nights are
Tuesdays where he and his family have nothing going on and they
get to sit around the table, eat together and just talk.
Those are my favorite nights,
Tuesday nights, Delgado said.
