1. GLOBAL FOOD DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT AND

CONSUMABLES MARKET OVERVIEW
1.1 REPORT DESCRIPTION
Food quality and safety have become increasingly important in the recent years. The rising foodborne illness cases annually, free global trade activity and consumer awareness has fuelled the
growth of food testing market. Microbial contamination, mislabelling, and adulteration have
been the major causes of food scandals around the globe. Illness cases of food allergy also have
been largely reported in recent times. Active mass media coverage of such mishaps has
pressurized food manufacturers to comply with the regulatory standards and go overboard to
appease customers. Thus, food testing and certification are important for any food product
manufacturer in the current era to avoid consumer backlash and jeopardize their brand
reputation.
The report provides a detailed account of all the equipment and consumables used in food
diagnostics in terms of both value and volume (unit shipments). The market is segmented into
different types of diagnostic equipment and consumable type, application, and geography.
Agilent Technologies (U.S.), Thermo Fischer (U.S.), and Shimadzu Corporation (Japan) are the
major players accounting for a significant share in the total market. Other players have also been
profiled with their, financials, business analysis, recent developments and product overview. The
report estimates the market sizes of all segments and also forecasts the market estimates for the
same till 2020. Also included in the report is an analysis of the market forces (Drivers,
Constraints and Challenges) along with Porters five forces of the market.

2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The food diagnostic industry is highly diversified market including of several equipment and
consumables. To ensure the safety and nutritional value of a food product to be consumed some
tests are conducted. The report provides a detailed analysis of all the diagnostic equipment used
for food diagnosis, both in terms of both value and volume (unit shipments). The market is
segmented into different equipment types and consumable type, by application and by
geography. IndustryARC estimated that the global food diagnostic equipment market size for
2014 to be around $2,792m while that of consumables was around $2,118m.
Increasing trade of food around the world, rising instances of food mishaps resulting in product
recalls, rising consumer awareness on food to be consumed, regular audits, are the key factors
driving the demand for food diagnostic equipment. Stringent regulations enforced by regulatory
agencies of different countries are another major factor fuelling the growth of this industry. The
food product manufacturers are financing the food diagnostic services not just to ensure match
with the food regulations of that country but also to increase marketability of their products by
making various claims such as Cholesterol Free, GM Free, Fat Free etc.
The food diagnostic equipment market is segmented based on the major types of diagnostic
equipment such as mass spectrometers, chromatography, PCR, ELISA, Immunoassay, cytometry
and hybrid-systems and others

PCR equipment accounted for the maximum share in 2014 and is estimated to grow with the
fastest CAGR through 2020 owing mainly to the rise in the installations. Following PCR,
Immunoassay and Hybrid-systems are to grow at faster rate. This diagnostic equipment is mostly
used to test the nutritional value and contaminants in the food product.
Agilent Technologies Inc. (U.S.) and Thermo Fisher Inc. (U.S.) accounted for considerable share
in the market owing to their strong focus on food diagnostic equipment segment. Thermo Fisher
Inc. had made collaborations and acquisitions apart from launching six products to increase its
revenues from food diagnostic equipment business unit. Agilent Technologies Inc. launched five
products, out of which four were hybrid systems. The company launched 6400 LC/MS system,
Q-TOF GC/MS System, 5977A Series GC/MSD, and GC-MS system recently which are used
for varied applications of food testing.

4.1 MARKET DRIVERS

Rising contamination instances set to increase food testing demand
The number of food safety mishaps has increased considerably in the recent times. The mishaps
are caused due to presence of the contaminants in high amount and usage of banned ingredients.
Recent outbreaks such as the horse DNA scandal in Europe proved that the labelling of the
food products is still a significant concern in the food industry. In January 2013, horse DNA was
found in meat products labelled as beef and pork in Europe. In some cases, almost 100% of the
meat products were found to be incorrectly labelled. Though, horse meat isnt harmful to human
health but it is banned in UK, Ireland and other European countries. This issue has brought the
food safety authorities to adopt stringent testing and certification measures to prevent such
frauds.
