Critical Analysis Skill Mapping Survey - Jamukoli

The skill mapping survey was conducted in the Jamukoli village 3 Kilometers away from the
XUB campus. Jamukoli is a Gram Panchayat in the Jatni Block of Khorda District of Odisha.
There are 309 households in the Jamukoli village with a population of 1644 as per the census
2011 data (www.census2011.co.in ... Khordha Airfield (Kapila Prasad), 10.01.2014, 08:00
AM). The survey was conducted in the 50 households of the village randomly selected. The
critical analysis of the data collected was done to find the skills possessed by the villagers &
where they use it what is the skills training they aspire for?.
The primary occupation of the villagers of Jamukoli as can be seen in the Annexure-1 is Farming
& Allied Sector1 which accounts for 17%. In farming the main cultivation is that of paddy that
too is rain fed farming. Due to lack of irrigation facilities only once cropping is done. The rest 8
months of the year most of them remain unemployed with no source of income as found during
our survey only a few of them were having secondary occupation otherwise all of them
consumes the produce of this single crop. One observation was also that very few among them
do vegetable cultivation for home use also.
The youth of the village & also the age group 30-44 of the villagers constitute are more among
the households we did the survey it can be seen that they are more in to service (govt./private)
that is why it accounts for 14% of the total sample population. Another reason for the same is
the presence of educational institutions within 5 Kilometers of the village which make them
suitable to work there in clerical posts & some with basic computer skills are working in the
computer labs of XUB & OEC as found during the survey.
Only 5% of the villagers carry out their own business. Small petty shops like betel shops, grocery
shops, tea stalls are run by a few people only to cater to the daily needs of the villagers.
52% of the sample population is unemployed as seen in the pie chart of Annexure -1. The rate of
unemployment seems to very high as it also includes the children of age group 0-14 & people of
age more than that of 60 years. When we see the survey statistics 28 % in this 52 % are not in the
workforce thus 24 % of the sample population of our survey are unemployed with most of them
having educational qualification of 8TH pass.
Rest 12 % of the sample population is involved in other source of income activities like
remittance & old age pension.
From the Annexure-2 we inferred that more than half of the villagers surveyed (i.e. Sample
Population) possessed no skill (55%), 29% of the villagers surveyed were skilled traditionally,
4% of the villagers were vocationally skilled and rest of were technically skilled. The data
includes the 28% of the non-eligible workforce in to it i.e. the children & the old people.
Traditionally Skilled- In this category of skill mapping we included the surveyed villagers who
knew traditional way of practicing the livelihood activities like agriculture, animal rearing etc. If
we do not include the age group of 0-14 we can infer from the graph that nearly 60 villagers are
1

We have included daily wage workers in farming & allied sector as there was no options available in
the questionnaire.

traditionally skilled, but from another graph i.e. Annexure -3 we can find that though 60 villagers
are traditionally skilled among them 52% are unemployed. If we exclude the age range 0f 0-14
this figure can scale down to nearly 40%; but it is a measure of concern regarding the
unemployment.
Vocationally Skilled- Mostly in this category we included the villagers who are doing jobs in
private and government sector. We can infer from the Annexure-3 that the villagers in the age
group of 15-44 are vocationally skilled and most of them are doing jobs. Mostly these skill
holders are doing jobs in private and govt. Sectors as peons, security guards, masons, carpenters,
painters etc.
Technically Skilled- 12% of the surveyed villagers were technically skilled. In this category we
included the villagers who are attending nearby engineering college and industrial training
centers etc. In the age group of 15-29 we inferred that mostly the technical skill includes basic
computer skills. One of the villagers we surveyed is doing a job as a lab attendant in the
computer labs of Xavier University.
From Annexure -3 we can infer the 31 people of age group 15-29 have no skills and constitute
the most of the unemployed people among the sample population. 11 of them are having
technical skills i.e. as discussed above are associated in the service sector along with the
educational institutions within 5 Kilometers of the village, 4 have vocational education & 15 of
them are having traditional skills. In age group 30 -44 & 44- 59 constitutes of the people with no
skills thus accounting for the unemployment among the villagers.
From Annexure 4 we can see that 52% of the traditionally skilled persons, 25 % of the
vocationally skilled persons, 24 % persons with technically skilled persons, 60% of people with
no skills are unemployed. There is some discrepancy that can be found in the annexure which
shows that 10% of the people with no skills are working in service sector. As can be seen most of
the people with vocational or technical skills are in to Service sector in govt. or private.
From Annexure-5 we can see that only 19% of the villagers are being trained and 81% of them
remain untrained. This graph also includes children & old people who accounts for 28 % of our
sample population. Among the trainings attended 9% most is with the people with computer
skills. Other trainings attended are ITI, Agri-entrepreneurship, Driving, Tailoring etc.
From Annexure-6 it is very clear that 23 out of 50 respondents are not motivated enough to opt
for any training they want to undergo if opportunity is given. Most of the respondents then aspire
for training in handlooms & weaving followed by software & hardware repairing followed by
boutique. This shows the behavior of the youth in the villagers more inclined towards technical
skills they want to leave the farming sector even their parents want the same with very few
interested dairy technology training & no one for training on new farming methods.
We would like to suggest that we need to impart the training of new farm technology and
cultivation methods to the farmers to increase their productivity & training to them to market
their produce. And as most of the villagers aspire for i.e. handloom & weaving will help them.
Very few of the villagers are interested in dairy technology as very few have cows in their
houses but they too need to be trained as the production milk by them is very low as found
during the interaction with the villagers.
