PROBLEM SET 1 - Part 1 of 2
2nd Semester AY 2014-2015

09 February 2015

INSTRUCTION: Provide a COMPLETE and NEAT solution to the following challenge questions.
Each challenge question is worth 10 points. You can do it individually, or as a group which may be
composed of at most 3 students. The deadline of submission is 14 February 2015, on or before 5:00 pm
at DMCS. Late submissions will not be considered.
1. The number of pounds per square foot in the force of the wind on a plane surface when the winds
velocity is v miles per hour varies directly as the square of v. Suppose the force is 2 lb. per sq. ft.
when the winds velocity is 20 mi/hr. How close to 30 mi/hr will the winds velocity be when the force
of the wind on a plane surface is between 4.45 lb. per ft. and 4.55 lb per ft.?
2. According to Einsteins Special Theory of Relativity, no particle with positive mass can travel faster
than the speed of light. The theory specifies that if m(v) is the measure of the mass of a particle
moving with a velocity of measure v, then
m0
m(v) = r
 v 2
1
c
where m0 is the constant measure of the particles rest mass relative to some reference frame, and c is
the constant measure of the speed of light. Explain (with complete details) why none of the following
limits exists: lim m(v) and explain why m0 is called the rest mass, lim m(v), lim+ m(v), lim m(v).

In your explanation, indicate the behavior of m(v) as v approaches c through values less than c.
3. After an injection, the concentration of drug in a muscle varies according to a function of time f (t).
t
. Find the limit of f (t) as t 0 and t ,
Suppose that t is measured in hours and f (t) =
t2 + 1
and interpret both limits in terms of the concentration of the drug.
4. Prove: Let f (x) be a continuous function from the closed interval [a, b]. Use the Intermediate Value
Theorem to show that f (x) has a fixed point, that is, there is a point x [a, b] such that f (x) = x.
5. For positive numbers a < b, the pulse function is defined as

0,
Pa,b (x) = H(x a) H(x b) = 1,

0,
where

(

H(x) =
0,

x<a
ax<b
xb

x0
x<0

is the Heaviside function.

A. Sketch the graph of the pulse function.
B. Find the following limits:
a. lim+ Pa,b (x)
xa

b. lim Pa,b (x)

xa

c. lim+ Pa,b (x)

xb

d. lim Pa,b (x)

C. Discuss the continuity of the pulse function.

D. Why is
U (x) =

called the unit pulse function?
