Types of CAE
Design analysis & evaluation by FEA
: Linear and Nonlinear analysis, Heat transfer and magnetic field analysis,
Fluid flow
 Process simulation
:Kinematics, rigid body dynamics, multi body dynamics
forming process simulation
or
MCAE(Mechanical CAE)
structures: linear & non-linear

explicit FEA: forming, crash

multi-body dynamics: simulation

FCAE(Fluid CAE)
heat transfer, Newtonian & Non-Newtonian flow

lecture 1-10

 Defects of CAE
time consuming modeling
FEA is difficult to be reflected to design change
few experts and time/money consuming for education

 Extension of CAE
Design analysis & evaluation
+ re-design and optimization + process simulation
The combination of CAD, CAM and CAE is necessary.

cf) FEM History

60's: Basic FEA for linear elastic structures
1965: US general purpose FE analysis --> NASTRAN
70's: Fluid flow, Non-linear analysis (MSC NASTRAN,
ANSYS..)
80's: Impact problem (DYNA 3D, LS/DYNA), adaptive
FEM
90's: Global-local analysis

lecture 1-12

Demands of CAE
1.simplifying FE modeling methods
: CAD linked automatic mesh generation +adaptive FE methods
+meshless FE methods
2. integration for production engineering
3. Modeling takes 70% of CAE
--> The link with CAD is necessary since most pre/post processor of FE
modeling has been developed independently from CAD.
Now, CAD software is absorbing CAE and CAD software must be linked
with FE pre/post processor perfactly.
