Piping up over floods

THE misery unleashed by the floodwaters
earlier this month is nothing new to residents
of four Cranbourne North streets.
Residents of Stirling Avenue, Rachel Drive,
Orlit Close and Kent Court say their area is
prone to frequent flooding and the drainage
has been an ongoing problem.
Rachel Drive residents Shirley and Bert
Robinson said their street had flooded five
times since November, twice bringing with it
raw sewage from their pipelines.
Sewage in the shower, sewage in the sink,
sewage in the handbasin. These gullytraps
[street drains] are still full of water, Mr
Robinson said.

They are calling on Casey Council and Melbourne Water to fix the problem.
Neighbours have also reported dirty nappies
and syringes emerging from the drains.
Wed like the drains cleaned out, the gullytraps cleaned up and a good clean-up in general, Mr Robinson said.
When the Weekly met Mr Robinson on
Wednesday 12 days after flooding hit Melbourne drains in his street were full of dark,
stagnant water.
Melbourne Water has conceded the frequency of flooding in the area is not acceptable.
However, residents have may have to wait
some time for their situation to improve.
Plans for a downstream upgrade to improve

water flows have been delayed while Melbourne Water awaits approval from landowners.
Floodplain manager Phillip Neville said
there are also plans to build a retarding basin
to reduce the frequency of roads being inundated. In the meantime, we will continue to
monitor the area and clear drainage after
severe weather.
Mayfield Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon said the council would work closely
with Melbourne Water to resolve drainage and
flooding issues, and ensure maintenance of the
drainage system. Its imperative that this be
dealt with as a matter of urgency to instil confidence in the residents that their estate wont
flood the next time it rains.
