SPEECH BY H.E.

MARGARET KENYATTA, THE FIRST LADY OF THE REPUBLIC OF

KENYA, DURING A GALA DINNER HELD IN SUPPORT OF THE BEYOND ZERO
CAMPAIGN AT THE RESIDENCE OF THE MOROCCAN AMBASSADOR TO KENYA ON
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2015
YOUR EXCELLENCIES AMBASSADORS AND HIGH COMMISSIONERS
DISTINGUSIHED GUESTS,
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I am honoured to join you this evening during this Gala Dinner in support of the Beyond Zero
campaign. Allow me to express my sincere gratitude to H.E. Benryane and Mrs. Benryane for
organizing this event.
I note with appreciation that this Gala Dinner has been organized to mark the 50th anniversary
since the establishment of bilateral relations between Kenya and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Over the years, these relations have registered significant growth in various fields of cooperation
between our two countries including; education, energy, trade and aviation. Todays Gala Dinner
will strengthen these fraternal ties besides supporting the Beyond Zero campaign.
My office launched the Beyond Zero campaign in January 2014 with the aim of partnering with
the Government and other stakeholders in reducing maternal and child mortality in our country.
I am aware that different countries represented here face different challenges related to maternal
and child health. I also take note that some of us have made major strides in this area.
Unfortunately, in most developing countries especially in Africa, the status of maternal and child
health remains an issue of great concern.
I believe we can learn from each other and that we all have the potential to make a contribution
in improving this situation. This can be achieved either through sharing and exchanging
information or by supporting the various initiatives, aimed at improving the maternal and child
health in our respective countries.
Allow me to elaborate a little more on the beyond zero campaign. This campaign is part of the
initiatives outlined in my strategic framework towards HIV control, promotion of maternal, new
born and child health in Kenya.
Through this campaign, we aim to make a positive contribution towards the improvement of
maternal, child health as well as the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV by
improving the access of women to maternal and child health services through provision of
mobile clinics.

Since the launch of this campaign and through the support of many partners, we have been
able to procure twenty mobile clinics, nineteen of which have so far been handed over to
different counties throughout our country.
Despite these achievements, a lot more still needs to be done. Many more clinics both mobile
and static are required to cover all the counties of Kenya.
It is for this reason that I invite all of us to partner with us so that every corner of our country is
reached with a Beyond Zero clinic.
One way we could do this is by participating in the 2nd edition of the First Ladys Half Marathon
scheduled for 8th March 2015 in Nairobi. I take this opportunity to invite those who have not
already registered to do so. Also, encourage your families and friends to join us in this effort
aimed at saving the lives of Kenyan mothers and children.
I thank each of you for contributing to the noble cause. As I have said at numerous fora, no
woman should die while giving life. Together we can make a difference through our different
capabilities.
I look forward to your continued support.
THANK YOU.
