Introduction
Since September 2002 the U.S. Green Building Council has accepted results from the Carrier Hourly
Analysis Program for use in Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1 analysis submittals. This acceptance is based
on HAP compliance with simulation software requirements defined in ASHRAE Standard 90.1.
For LEED NC-2.2, requirements are defined in ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2004 Appendix G, section G2.
For LEED 2009, requirements are defined in ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2007 Appendix G, section G2. For
details on HAP v4.61 compliance with these requirements, please refer to section A of this document.
Readers should note that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) does not formally certify software
programs. The USGBC only determines acceptability of data for LEED project submissions. Therefore
the fact that HAP results are accepted for LEED submissions in no way implies USGBC certification of the
HAP program.

A. HAP v4.61 Compliance with LEED NC-2.2

Requirements
Building simulation software used for LEED NC-2.2 Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1 analysis must
comply with requirements stated in ASHRAE 90.1-2004 Appendix G section G.2. For LEED 2009, the
software must comply with requirements in ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Appendix G section G.2. The
requirements in the 2004 and 2007 editions of the Standard are nearly identical, with the 2007 edition
adding one key requirement. In the table below the left-hand column shows the requirements from the
2007 edition of the standard since it is the more stringent of the two. The right-hand column describes how
HAP v4.61 complies with these requirements.

Description of How HAP v4.61 Complies

G2.2 Simulation Program.

The simulation
program shall be a computer-based program for the
analysis of energy consumption in buildings (a
program such as, but not limited to, DOE-2, BLAST
or EnergyPlus). The simulation program shall
include calculation methodologies for the building
components modeled. For the components that
cannot be modeled by the simulation program, the
exceptional calculation methods requirements in
Section G2.5 may be used.

Meets Requirements. HAP is a software program

intended for both the design of HVAC systems and
the analysis of building energy consumption.
HAP performs a true 8760-hour energy simulation
using TMY or TRY weather data and uses the
Transfer Function load calculation method.
The calculation methodologies used in HAP cover
most common building architectural features,
building materials, HVAC systems and HVAC
equipment.

G2.2.1 The simulation program shall be approved

by the rating authority and shall, at a minimum,
have the ability to explicitly model all of the
following:
(a) 8,760 hours per year;

Meets Requirements.
HAP calculates loads,
system and equipment performance for 8,760 hours
per year, making separate calculations for the
unique operating conditions in all 8,760 hours.

(b) hourly variations in occupancy, lighting power,

miscellaneous equipment power, thermostat
setpoints, and HVAC system operation, defined
separately for each day of the week and holidays;

Meets Requirements. HAP permits all the listed

items to be scheduled on an hourly basis, with the
provision for defining separate schedules for each
day of the week and holidays.

Description of How HAP v4.61 Complies

(c) thermal mass effects;

Meets Requirements. HAP uses the Transfer

Function method to calculate loads, thereby
accounting for the storage and release of heat in the
thermal mass of the building.

(d) Ten or more thermal zones;

Exceeds Requirements. Up to 100 thermal zones

per air handling system and up to 250 unique air
handling systems per project are permitted.

(e) part-load performance curves for mechanical

equipment;

Meets Requirements. HAP provides part-load

performance curves and/or allows input of
performance curves for mechanical equipment.

(f) capacity and efficiency correction curves for

mechanical cooling and heating equipment.

Meets Requirements. HAP provides capacity and

efficiency correction curves for cooling and heating
equipment such as packaged DX units, split DX
units, air source heat pumps, water-source heat
pumps, chillers, and boilers.

(g) air-side economizers with integrated control;

Meets Requirements. HAP provides models for

integrated air-side economizers.

(h) the baseline building design characteristics

specified in G3.

Meets Requirements. HAP provides capabilities to

meet the requirements in section G3.

G2.2.2 The simulation program shall have the

ability to either (1) directly determine the proposed
building performance and baseline building
performance or (2) produce hourly reports of energy
use and an energy source suitable for determining
the proposed building performance and baseline
building performance using a separate calculation
engine.

Meets Requirements. HAP calculates annual

energy use and energy cost for buildings directly. It
can therefore determine proposed and baseline
building energy use and energy costs. Hourly,
daily, monthly and annual reports of energy
performance are provided.

G2.2.3 The simulation program shall be capable of

performing design load calculations to determine
required HVAC equipment capacities and air and
water flow rates in accordance with generally
accepted engineering standards and handbooks (for
example, ASHRAE Handbook - Fundamentals) for
both the proposed design and baseline building
design.

Meets Requirements. HAP provides a full suite of

system design features. Load calculations are
performed using the ASHRAE Transfer Function
Method referenced in the ASHRAE Handbook of
Fundamentals.

G2.2.4 The simulation program shall be tested

according to ASHRAE Standard 140, and the
results shall be furnished by the software provider.

Meets Requirements. HAP v4.61 has been tested

per ASHRAE Standard 140-2007, Standard Method
of Test for the Evaluation of Building Energy
Analysis Computer Programs. Results are available
from Carrier upon request.
