FOREWORD
J. he Wheaton College Collection of Greek and Roman Coins was begun during the
academic year 1931/32, according to a report of an exhibit in the Wheaton News for
April 30, 1932: "Beside the group of coins was a notice stating that they had been given
to the College by the American Numismatic Society in return for work done at Wheaton
for the Society's files in New York," by Classics students under the direction of Eunice
Work, Professor of Greek. These are nos. 6, 11, 17, 21, 23, 29, 31, 40, 46, 93, 103,151,
160, 187, 188, 206, 207, 208, 209, 212, 227, 240, 241, 273, 278, 305, 327 and 329. In
May 1945, Arthur Stone Dewing, president of The American Numismatic Society,
returned his lecturer's honorarium to the Classics Club for the purchase of antiquities.
The club then purchased for the Department of Classics from the Society a supple-
mentary group; nos. 32, 38, 39, 53, 142, 153, 185, 186, 189, 231 and 244. In 1953, the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston gave the Department no. 102. When Professor Work
retired in 1955, without telling her successor, Professor Doris Taylor (later Mrs.
Bishop), she left with the Department her own coins; nos. 4, 33, 55, 211, 230, 331, 341,
342, 343, 352, 370, 372, 387, 390, 397, 405, 424, 428, 435 and 445. In 1970, after Mrs.
Bishop's death, they were identified by Margaret Thompson of The American Numis-
matic Society as Miss Work's own collection. In 1976, Charlotte Estabrooke (Mrs.
Joseph R. Stoddard, Class of 1933), hearing of plans for this catalogue, gave the Depart-
ment no. 394 which she had won by class acclamation asa prize for competitive studies
under Miss Work. All other coins in this catalogue are part of the bequest in 1967 of
antiquities from the estate of Adra Marshall Newell, widow of Edward T. Newell;
This publication conforms in general to the format established by the Sylloge Num-
morum Graecorum: emphasis is laid on the reproduction of the coins and the text is
limited to the basic numismatic data. The Greek section was written by R. Ross
Holloway. In his work he was assisted by the members of his seminar in Greek numis-
matics atBrown University in the spring of 1976; Donald Ariel, Catrina Avery, Catheryn
Cheal, Ian Dogole, William Granville, Diane Hedlund, Patricia McDonagh, and Thomas
Loening, each of whom drafted catalogue entries for a specific section of the Greek
series. The chronology of individual pieces in the series of Alexander III and Lysi-

The catalogue owes much to the efforts of Mrs. Bishop, who in the last semester of
her life worked with two students in verifying and rearranging the amorphous listing
