Angeles is to see Americas ethnic

future. At the bustling playground at
McDonalds in Koreatown, a dozen

shades of kids go down the slides not

much minding that not two of them
speak the same language. Parents of
grade-school children say they rarely
know the colour of their youngsters

best friends until they meet them; it never seems to occur to the children to say,
since
they have not yet been taught to care.

Most schools are teaching students to celebrate diversity and search for
common ground. Inglewood High School (90% white 20 years ago and 90% black
10 years ago) is 48% Latino today. We have the same challenges and Ive

learned to see that if everybody united, we could be a big force, says Efrain
Nava, a 16-year-old Mexican American. We are all minorities, but together we
are
C a majority.
California is an ethnic landscape. As recently as 1980, California was 76%
white. During the past ten years, the Hispanic community grew nearly 70% and
the Asian community 127%, so that by last years census, California was only

57% white. It is clear that early in the next century there will be no racial
majority at all. The children may have no trouble adjusting, but their parents still
have
much to learn.

California is, by any measure, Americas most colourful state. The richness
of its culture, the liveliness of its fashions and the ruthlessness of its politics all

reflect the mix of races and cultures that blend and clash throughout the state.
This is the land where Asian dragons dance at Cinco de Mayo parades, where
viewers can tune in to the evening news spoken in Tagalog.

Arlene Kurtz recently applied for a job as a shop assistant with the City of North Miami, Florida,
U.S.A... At the job interview, she was asked to sign a legal document affirming that she had not
smoked for twelve months. She said: I cant. Im a smoker.
Although Kurtz knew that the city had banned smoking on the job place, she hadnt heard
about its new decision to employ only non-smokers. Its none of their business what you do away
from work, on weekdays or on your holiday, she says.
But a growing number of U.S. employers say its their business, because such matters can
affect the cost of health insurance (which is private in the U.S.). And smokers are not the only
ones who are being singled out, and suffering discrimination.
The Los Angeles fire department has ordered four employees to lose one kilo a month until they
reach the desired weight. The four have taken the fire department to court, arguing that they are
being discriminated because of their size.
A company in Atlanta prohibits employees from participating in such dangerous activities as
skydiving, motorcycling and mountain climbing.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is fighting back. It calls such rules and restrictions
life-style discrimination. Some states have responded by prohibiting employers from penalising
workers who engage in legal activities outside work. Lewis Maltby of the ACLU says: After five
oclock, our lives are our own.
