Childrens Offering

This Sunday, February 22 is the Rite of Election for our diocese, which will be celebrated at the
Church of Magdalene in Wichita at 2:30 in the afternoon. Before that we will celebrate the Rite
of Sending at the 10AM mass here at Saint Michael. Our catechumens are: Jill Ashbacher, Brad
Vinardi, and Jessica Little. I thank those who volunteered to be their sponsors and supported them
in their faith journey: Donna Fleury sponsor for Jill Ashbacher, Dr. Paoni for Brad Vinardi and
Faith Paoni for Jessica Little. Upon the testimony of sponsors, catechists, and the catechumens'
affirmation of their intention to join the Church, the Church makes its "election" of these
catechumens to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. In the presence of the bishop (or his
delegate), they inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect at the cathedral as a pledge of fidelity.
Now the catechumens are called "the elect' or "the illuminandi" ("those who will be enlightened").
They now begin a Period of Purification and Enlightenment the final preparation for the
reception of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. After the Easter Vigil, the newly
baptized and confirmed members of the Church (technically called neophytes) enter the Period of
Postbaptismal Catechesis or Mystagogy. The neophytes grow in their understanding of the
mysteries of the faith and strengthen their bonding with the rest of the faithful. They should enter
more fully into the life and unity of the Church. The RCIA is a spiritually moving process
beneficial to the whole parish community. As we draw closer to the celebration of Easter, let us
pray in particular for those elect who will be entering our holy Catholic Church this Easter, that
they will persevere in their desire to follow Christ closely as a Catholic.
The Saint Michael Parish Pastoral Council at last Tuesdays meeting approved the No Alcohol
Policy for those Renting the Hall. This issue has been in the agenda at the council for several
months since last year and has been the subject for long discussion. Currently we allow Alcohol
Use for those who are renting the hall with an additional insurance for its use. While permission
for alcohol use has restrictions, we dont have anyone to monitor its implementation. There
were two cases in the past of excessive drinking happening within our hall while rented. Even
before those incidents, this policy had already been proposed. After they happened, the more the
necessity of this policy is perceived. More than legal liability, this policy is considered foremost on
moral ground among other factors considered. We have the moral responsibility if excessive
drinking is happening in our premises and much worst if alcohol is served to minors. Since it is
hard for us to monitor or control its use, we have no choice but to not allow the use of alcohol to
those who will be renting our building. As your pastor, I commend the members of the parish
council for their diligence and sacrifice of their time for its discussion and their fortitude to
approve it as a policy. I have been studying its merits since its inclusion in the agenda. I have
understood its wisdom and benefits for the common good. I therefore approve this policy as
favorably voted on by the council! This policy is effective immediately but not retroactive to those
who have already finalized their reservation before this policy was approved. I am not sure if Saint
Joseph will adopt this policy, but as of now, nothing about this issue has floated yet.

God bless you all! - Fr. Roger
