improvethemselves.Sometimesorganizationsfeeltheyareoverwhelmedwith
barriersthatkeepthemfromachievingtheirgoals.Asaresult,theirefforts
becomefragmentedandunfocused.Ishowthemhowtodealwiththissituation
bythinkingintermsofaprocess.Thisprocessiscalledsystemsthinking.
Manythinkershavebeenwritingaboutsystemsthinkingforalongtime,most
notablyPeterSenge,whowroteabookentitledTheFifthDiscipline.Overthe
24yearsthatIhavebeenafacilitator,IhavecometounderstandthatIbasically
usethisprocesswhenIworkwithorganizationsandgroupsofpeople.
Iexplaintogroupsthatwhatsoverwhelmingthemareforcesthatareall
interrelated.Theyarenotmutuallyexclusive.Theyincludefactorssuchasroot
causesandindividualperspectives.Ihelpthemanalyzethesefactorsinorderto
understandhowtheygottowheretheyarenowandwheretogofromhere.
AnexampleiswhenIconductastrategicplanningprocesswithagroupof
people.Igetthegrouptolistallofthebarriersthattheybelievearekeeping
themfromachievingtheirgoal,includingthecausesandtheconsequencesofnot
removingthem.Thenwebegintodevelopstrategiestobreakdownthebarriers.
ThefirststepIintroducetotheminsystemsthinkingistheclearidentificationof
theirgoal.Somegroupsinsistthattheyhavemanygoals,butIbringthem
aroundtotherealitythattheycanonlyhaveonegoal.Everythingelseis
