Abstract
In Han Chiang College, there many established clubs and societies which divided into
two groups which are Academic Society (compulsory for students to participate) and Nonacademic Clubs (students free to take part in). The main purpose of this report is to analysis
students perception on the clubs and societies in Han Chiang College.

Following issues were analysed and discussed throughout the report:

i.
ii.
iii.
iv.

Popularity of different clubs and societies.

Influences of the clubs and societies toward students.
Students perception and recommendation on these clubs and societies.
Types of club and society that students want to establish in Han Chiang College.
Some problems were identified and recommendations are given to solve them. It is

recommended that students, committee members of each clubs or societies and also the
college management should work together. Students have to be more aware of the benefits of
joining extracurricular activities. Besides, committee members of clubs or societies were
urged to hold more activities so that the clubs or societies wouldnt fall asleep. They were
recommended to put in more effort promoting their own clubs or societies.
It is proposed that the management should take steps to encourage participation in
extracurricular activities. First, encouragement should be given to those that willing to
propose new clubs. Second, some benefits may be provided to students or committee
members of clubs or societies as motivator. Third, regulation should be established to make
sure that every students are involved in extracurricular activities.

1. Introduction
Nowadays, many colleges, schools or universities will establish different type of clubs
and societies to let students build up a strong relationship among people. The club and society
organizations are good to college students, as they help students to work together and train
their leadership, management and communication skills. Besides, participation in these
extracurricular activities will build up students socializing skills and help them to know
better on how to plan an event and control it.
These are very important in the students life and they will definitely help them to
gain more experiences. It is mentioned by Astin (1984) that amount of physical energy
students exert are closely related to amount of psychological energy they put into their
college experience. Thus, extracurricular organizations are very important for students. Many
involvement studies have looked broadly at student participation in a variety of areas
including residence life, employment, athletics, and extracurricular activities (Martin, 2000).
Thus, almost every school has strings of clubs and societies such as Chinese society, English
society, taekwondo, student council, business management society.
In Han Chiang College, the established clubs and societies can be divided into two
groups which are Academic Society and Non-academic Clubs. For Academic Society, there
are Business Society, Mass Communication Society, Information Technology & Multimedia
Design Society and also Chinese Study Society. These four societies are compulsory for
students to join once they enrolled in different schools. For the Non-academic Clubs, there
are clubs such as Student Council, Teen Frequency, Off Angle Photograph, Drama & Dance
Society, HCTV Media Team, Sports Club and Skating Club. Students are given opportunity
to choose whether to enter these clubs or not. Hence, this paper is done to research on the
students perception of the importance of the clubs and societies in Han Chiang College.

1.1. Purpose

This research paper is to investigate the following issues:

v.
vi.
vii.
viii.

Popularity of different clubs and societies.

Influences of the clubs and societies toward students.
Students perception and recommendation on these clubs and societies.
Types of club and society that students want to establish in Han Chiang College.

1.2. Method
The information used in this written report was based on the data collected through
conducting survey by distributing the questionnaire to students in Han Chiang College. The
respondents are chosen through convenience method, where respondents are picked randomly
in the college compound.
The questionnaire covers area such as students opinion on the clubs and societies.
There are three parts in the questionnaire forms. First part is demographic questions that
cover gender, semester, school, currently joined clubs, the reason of joining the clubs, and
arrangement of ranking for all present clubs and society. Second part is the multi-rating scale
where the respondent is given a continuum of labelled categories on how clubs and societies
influence them. The third part is open-ended questions, students are free to fill up and answer
the questions according to their opinion.
1.3. Limitations
The limitation of this research is that some students may not answer the questionnaire
properly. Besides, this questionnaire is prepared in a simple and brief manner to encourage
student participate in the survey. Hence, there might be some situations or conditions that are
not stated in the questionnaire.

2.2. Ranking of Clubs and Societies Based on Their Popularity

In the following section, comparison of mean between the ranking of clubs and
societies in Han Chiang College were done. The ranking of clubs and societies were fully
based on Question 6 in the questionnaires distributed to the respondents. Respondents were
asked to rank the given clubs and societies according to the popularity of the clubs in the
college. The averages of the collected answers were tabulated for comparison. If the mean is
smaller, the clubs and societies are more popular. Otherwise, the clubs and societies are less
popular.

Table 2.2.1: Comparison of Mean Between Clubs and Societies (Analysed with Gender).

Table 2.2.1 showed the comparison of mean between clubs and societies in the
college. The mean listed in the table were analysed with gender to identify which clubs or
societies are more popular among male and female students. For both male and female

~8~

students, Teen Frequency is the most popular clubs while the second most popular society is
Business Society. This is because both Teen Frequency and Business Society organize more
activities compare to other clubs and society.

But, the least popular club is different for male and female students. For male
students, the least popular club is Chinese Study Society because in overall, the most students
in HCC are not really concern about other schools society while female students ranked
Skating Club as the least popular club in Han Chiang College. It is proposed that this club
was newly established and less people have knowledge of it.

Table 2.2.2: Comparison of Mean Between Clubs and Societies (Analysed with School).
Table 2.2.2 showed the comparison of mean between clubs and societies in the
college. The mean listed in the table were used to rank the clubs and societies according to

~9~

their popularity. If the mean is smaller, the clubs and societies are more popular. Otherwise,
the clubs and societies are less popular. Therefore, it is clearly seen from the table that Teen
Frequency is more popular in term for overall popularity of clubs among all students, while
Skating Club is the least.
For Mass Communication Students, Teen Frequency is also the most popular clubs
among the respondents where the mean is 2.93 because Mass Communication students tend
to be more active. The second of the list is HCTV Media team with a mean of 4.17 because
many broadcasting student join this club, while the least popular among Mass
Communication students is the newly established Skating Club.
For Business Students, Business Society is the most popular society among
respondents where the mean is 1.30. This is because usually in their first orientation session,
committee members of business society will provide a briefing about society. The second
most popular club is Drama and Dance Society with a mean of 4.60. The least popular clubs
among Business Students is Off Angle Photography and Sports Club both with a mean of
8.30. According to our survey questionnaire, all of business respondent didnt involve in any
other clubs except Business Society (Refer to table 2.2.3 in appendix page ii). Therefore,
business students had less familiarity on other clubs and societies.
For Chinese Study Students, the most popular society is their own school society with
a mean of 1.00. It is because those Chinese Study students are handled through family
system which is similar to the mentor-mentee systems where senior will take care of
junior from the same family. Thus, they tend to have stronger attachment on their own
school society. The second most popular society is the Mass Communication Society with a
mean of 3.75 and the least popular club is also the Skating Club with a mean of 10.00.

~ 10 ~

For IT and Multimedia Design Students, they are more familiar with Teen Frequency
as the mean is 2.00 because of their own society is not active, thus they join other clubs.
Besides, the second most popular club is Off Angle Photography with a mean of 2.33. Since
multimedia design students need to have better photography skills so they join this club to
learn more. The least popular club is the Chinese Study Society with a mean of 9.17.

~ 11 ~

2.3. Influences of Clubs and Societies on Students Development

In the following section, comparison of mean of students opinion on how clubs and
societies influence their colleges life in Han Chiang College was done. The data ere
extracted from Part 2 in the questionnaires distributed to the respondents. Respondents were
given a continuum of labelled categories on how clubs and societies influence them and the
respondents choose 5 for strongly agree, 4 for agree, 3 for strongly disagree, 2 for disagree
and 1 for not applicable. The averages of the collected answers were tabulated for
comparison. If the mean is smaller, that item is less influential. Otherwise, that item is more
influential.

Table 2.3.1: Comparison of Mean Between Influential Items (Analysed with Gender).
Table 2.3.1 showed the comparison of mean of students opinion on how clubs and
societies influence their colleges life in Han Chiang College. The mean listed in the table
were analysed with gender to identify which item are more influential toward male and
female students.

~ 12 ~

For male students, they believed that by participating in clubs and societies activities,
they are able to think in a more analytical and logical manner (mean=4.00). Besides, they
believed that these activities develop their own values and ethical standards (mean=4.00).
However, it is also stated in the table that male students dont really believed that
extracurricular activities will positively affect their personality (mean=3.14).
For female students, they believed that by participating in clubs and societies
activities, their socializing skills can be improved (mean=4.21). Moreover, it is stated in the
table that extracurricular activities improved their general knowledge (mean=3.93) and at the
same time enhance the ability to work in a team (mean=3.96). Female students believed that
extracurricular activities dont really affect their leisure hours (mean=3.25).
According to research done by universities in Los Angeles and Madrid, it is showed
that men do better on spatial intelligence while women, have greater emotional intelligence.
Simply put, men are more logical thinking thus caused them to be more affected in the onhand learning item when they are involved in extracurricular activities. As for women that
can be assumed to be more emotional, they would be more affected in the socializing part and
also the teamwork skills. It is because women would tend to build relationship easier
compared to men.

~ 13 ~

Table 2.3.2: Comparison of Mean Between Influential Items (Analysed with School).
Table 2.3.2 showed the comparison of mean comparison of mean of students opinion
on how clubs and societies influence their colleges life in Han Chiang College. The mean
listed in the table were analysed with different schools to identify which item are more
influential among students from different schools.
From the table, Mass Communication Students believed that extracurricular activities
able to develop their socializing skills better as the mean is 4.00. It is because Mass
Communication students involved a lot in event planning or interviewing session where they
need to keep on socializing with other people. Thus, it will indirectly brush up their
socializing skills. The second influential item with mean of 3.93 is the development of values
and ethical standards. It can be seen that Mass Communication students dont really think
whether extracurricular activities will affect their leisure hours as the mean is the lowest
(3.30).

~ 14 ~

For Business students, they believed that extracurricular activities able to enhance
their team working skills rather than socializing skills as the mean is 4.50 that are 0.2 higher
than in socializing skills. It can be concluded this manner because Business students are
exposed to many activities that required them to work in a team and plan for something.
Meanwhile, Business students leisure hours are not influenced as the mean is 3.20.
For Chinese Study Students, they are more affected in term of the development of
creative thinking (mean=4.25). In addition, they are influenced in term of socializing and
team working skills nearly as much as Mass Communication and Business students
(mean=4.00). As mentioned above, Chinese Study students are greatly attached to their own
school society. So it is normal for them to be affected more on their socializing kills and team
working skills. Apart from this, Chinese Study students are least affected in term of logical
thinking and they dont really think that by participating in extracurricular activities they will
able to gain more information related to future career (mean=2.75 for both).
Conversely, IT and Multimedia Design Students believed that extracurricular
activities may improve their analytical and logical thinking as the mean is 4.17. It is because
IT students need to have logical mind when dealing with programming and other
technological related stuff. Moreover, they also think that extracurricular activities help them
gain more information related to their future career with a mean of 4.17. IT and Multimedia
Design students believed they are more affected in term of physical fitness as the mean is
4.33. It is because Multimedia Design students tend to have legwork and outdoor activities
such as photo-shooting and mural painting. Similar to Mass Communication and Business
students, IT and Multimedia Design students also dont mind that their leisure hours were
affected by extracurricular activities.

~ 15 ~

2.4. Students Perception and Recommendation on the Clubs and Society They Currently
Involved
Some feedbacks were collected from the questionnaires where the respondents had
expressed their opinion on those clubs and societies that they currently joined and some
recommendation were given to improve the society.
For Business Society, most of the feedbacks received were positive as the respondents
felt that Business Society held many interesting activities for the members to take part.
Besides, it is also stated that Business Society is well-managed and the members are able to
work together as a big family. However, it is also recommended that Business Society should
be even more active by holding more business-related activities. It is to provide the members
more chance to learn more skills and how to survive in the actual business world. Moreover,
it is also suggested that more funding should be given to held activities.
For Teen Frequency, it is stated that the club itself had not been developed enough and
yet the committees had done good job in handling the club. Thus, the members asked for the
committees to increase the variety of activities. As for Off Angle Photography, one of the
members claimed that the presidents seldom plan activities for the members. So, the president
was urged to plan more activities for the members so that they were able to brush up their
photography skills.
Besides that, a few feedbacks for Mass Communication Society stated that the activity
held is enjoyable. But, a member claimed that He prefers to move as an individual
independent team with no commitment and will only work when there is happenings. It could
be assumed that this member is willing to work alone rather than participating in this society.
Therefore, Mass Communication Society is suggested to hold more interesting activities for

~ 16 ~

the members to attract their members attention. It would be a good idea for them to learn
from other college.
The members of Drama and Dance Society felt that the activities done were very fun,
interesting and most of the feedback received showed that the members were very happy of
the society. There is no recommendation given by the respondents on this society.
Furthermore, members of Students Council stated that further improvements were needed on
the council. For instance, it is recommended that more activities should be organized. Apart
from that, HCTV Media Team had received positive feedback as well. It was stated that the
member was happy with the club and its suggested to held more activities and recruit more
members.

~ 17 ~

2.5. Suggestion on New Clubs and Societies

Based on the questionnaires answered, some respondents had suggested new clubs
and societies that might be offered in Han Chiang College. Those suggestions were
categorised into 3 categories included Performing Arts (Orchestra Society, Marching Band,
Wheel of Fortune Club, Music Society, Acapella Club, Broadcaster Society, Choir Group,
Hip-Hop Club, Breakdance Club and any arts or events related clubs), Sports (Volley Ball
Society, Badminton Club, Ping Pong Club, Tennis Club, Swimming Club, Football Club,
Paintball Club and Basketball Club) and Hobbies (Fashion Society, Eating Society, Lego
Club, Horror Movie Club, Anime and Manga Club, Fishing Society, Drinking Club, Reading
Club, Handicraft Society and Dota Society).
Among all of these, Music Society had the most supporters which are 3 people out of
50. There were another few suggestion with 2 supporters each which are Anime and Manga
Club, Badminton Club, Ping Pong Club, Swimming Club, Paintball Club and Choir Group.

~ 18 ~

3. Conclusion
In a nutshell, answers from the students in Han Chiang College were collected and
analysed to show out popularity of different clubs and societies. Among all the 50
respondents, Teen Frequency is the most popular club while the second is Business Society.
These two clubs and societies are very popular because they always organize the activities
and their members also tend to be more active. Business Society found to be active because
every first year first semester students are compulsory join their first activities which caused
their members to be more familiar to the society. The least popular clubs is Skating Club
which is newly established.
Besides that, influences of participating in clubs and societies towards students were
discussed as well. As in genders context, male students are more affected in their analytical
skills while female students socializing skills and team working skills are influenced. As for
enrolled subjects context, Mass Communication students are found to be influenced on their
socializing skills. Business students believed that they are more affected in their team
working skills. For Chinese Study Students, they think that participation in clubs and
societies affect their development of creative thinking. IT and Multimedia Design Students
think that extracurricular activities may improve their analytical thinking and physical fitness.
In addition, respondents feedbacks on their own clubs or societies were collected.
Most of the feedbacks requested the clubs or societies to hold more activities. Other than
recommendation on the currently established clubs, suggestions on forming new clubs were
also collected. Those suggestions were categorised into 3 categories included Performing
Arts, Sports and Hobbies. Music society holds the most supporters followed by Anime and
Manga Club, Badminton Club, Ping Pong Club, Swimming Club, Paintball Club and Choir
Group.

~ 19 ~

4. Recommendation
In section 2.2, analysis on the ranking of clubs and societies were done among
students of different gender and students of different schools. Further elaborations on the
reason underlying the popularity were also discussed. It was also found that students from
different schools have different level of familiarity on different clubs and societies causing
differences on the ranking of the clubs and societies. It might due to the reason that many
students didnt involve in any club except their own schools society which their involvement
were compulsory.
Besides, feedbacks received showed that some students didnt know the existence of
certain clubs such as the newly established Skating Club. Nevertheless, some students dont
even realise that they are actually one of the members in a society. Furthermore, some clubs
or societies are having too little members caused them to become sleeping club where there
are no activities held at all throughout the year.
Thus, to solve these problems, it is recommended that students, committee members
of each clubs or societies and also the college management should work together. Students
should be more active during college year as it may become the final chance for them to learn
and gain more knowledge in schooling context before they graduate and start working.
By participating in extracurricular activities, students have the opportunity to learn
things that cannot be learnt through reading. For example, students involved in
extracurricular activities may think in a more mature manner and they will learn how to plan
and even handle activities by their own. Besides that, students can brush up their soft skills
such as time management skill, leadership skill, communicating skill, socializing skill, team
working skill and others. These skills would be very useful for students in their future

~ 20 ~

working life, so students are recommended to take part in extracurricular activities as the
benefits exceed the loss.
For committee members of clubs and societies, it is suggested that more activities
should be held to keep the clubs or societies in an active status because students would more
likely prefer to join a club that is fun and interesting rather than a club that is sleeping. For
those clubs that are nearly inactive, committees are recommended to do some performance or
events to promote their clubs or societies as these are the best ways to exhibit the nature of
the clubs to the fellow students. Besides that, they can actually promote their clubs or
societies by distributing handmade flyer to the students. It is to show the sincerity of the
clubs.
For the college side, it is proposed that the management should take steps to
encourage both the clubs and students to be more active. First, college shouldnt stop the
students from proposing new clubs or societies. They should give students chance to come
out with an idea and plan it out thoroughly. Besides, if the established club is of the students
interest, students would be happier to share the knowledge with others in the clubs and
outside the club.
Second, the college can also provide some benefits for students or committee
members of clubs or societies. For example, extracurricular marks as in secondary school
could be executed as well. In addition, college may as well give out prizes as motivator for
the best managed club of the year or even the best performed committee member. Third,
college can make some rules for the extracurricular activities such as each student should be
involve at least two clubs which are their own schools society and another club of their
choice. Students would be forced to find out more on the existing clubs or societies in college
which will indirectly prevent some clubs or societies to become inactive.
