INTRODUCTION
A study on stress management with special reference to
SINTEX INDUSTRIES.
The workplace is a challenging job assignment followed by
moderate doses of competitive spirit, constructive conflict and a zeal to
ahead of others and a ways in which individual cope, or deal with stress at
work is called stress management.
Employers should provide a stress-free work environment,
recognize where stress is becoming a problem for staff, and take action to
reduce stress. Stress in the workplace reduces productivity, increases
management pressures, and makes people ill in many ways, evidence of
which is still increasing. Workplace stress affects the performance of the
brain, including functions of work performance, memory, concentration, and
learning. Stress at work also provides a serious risk of litigation for all
employers and organizations, carrying significant liabilities for damages,
bad publicity and loss of reputation. Dealing with stress-related claims also
consumes vast amounts of management time. So, there are clearly strong
economic and financial reasons for organizations to manage and reduce
stress at work, aside from the obvious humanitarian and ethical
considerations.

Meaning of stress

A state of tension experienced by individuals facing extraordinary

demands, constraints or opportunities.

Definition of stress
Stress is an adaptive response to an external situation that results in
physical, psychological and/ or behavioral deviations for organizational
participants.
Stress can be defined as an overload/demand state, where individuals are
being presented with more information, stimuli, intensity, and immediacy
than they can take in or process.

The stress experience

An individual experiences stress depends:

The persons perception of the situation.

The persons past experiences.
The presence or absence of social support, and
Individual differences with regard to stress reactions.

Many health problems are caused or exacerbated by stress,

including:

Pain of any king

Heart disease
Digestive problems
Sleep problems
Depression
Obesity
Autoimmune disease
Skin conditions, such as eczema

Causes of stress
Top Ten Stressful Life Events
1. Spouses death
2. Divorce
3. Marriage separation
4. Jail term
5. Death of a close relative
6. Injury or illness
7. Marriage
8. Fired from job
9. Marriage reconciliation
10.Retirement
Whenever our body feels something not favorable, then it tries to defend
itself. If the situation continues for long time, then our body is working
overtime.
There are several causes of stress. For example, you are under stress
when you are worried about something, worried about your children,
worried about the illness of your father, worried about your job security, or
worried about your loans or similar things.

The following are the causes of stress:

Causes of stress at work

To meet out the demands of the job.

Your relationship with colleagues.
To control staff under you.
To train your staff and take work from them.
Support you receive from your boss, colleagues and juniors.
Excessive work pressure.
To meet out deadlines
To give new results.
To produce new publications if you are in research area.
Working overtime and on holidays.
New work hours.
Promotion
Argument or heated conversations with co-workers or boss.
Change of job
Work against will.
Harassment.
Sexual molestation

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

1. Assess current stress level of employees at Sintex Industries Ltd.
2. Identify situations that cause stress.
3. Be more knowledgeable on techniques/methods to lower stress.
4. Apply various stress reduction techniques to alleviate stress.
5. To know the stress of the employee.
6. Identify emotional, physical and mental effects of stress.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study is extended only to the employees working in
SINTEX INDUSTRIES.
It does not cover employees working in other branches of SINTEX
INDUSTRIES.
To fulfill objectives of this research, the study is undertaken to
analyze the stress management at SINTEX INDUSTRIES.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
There are 3 types. They are
1. Exploratory Research
2. Descriptive Research
3. Explanatory Research

Exploratory Research
Exploratory research might involve a literature search or
conducting focus group interviews. The exploration of new phenomena
in this way may help the researcher need for better understanding, may

test the feasibility of a more extensive study, or determine the best

methods to be used in a subsequent study. For these reasons, exploratory
research is broad in focus and rarely provides definite answers to specific
research issues. The objective of exploratory research is to identify key
issues and key variables. For example, one outcome might be a better
system of measurement for a specific variable. If you define your study
as exploratory research, then you need to clearly define the objectives.
Calling your report exploratory is not an excuse for lack of definition.
Descriptive Research
As its name suggests, descriptive research seeks to provide an
accurate description of observations of a phenomena. The object of the
collection of census data is to accurately describe basic information about
a national population at a particular point in time. The objective of much
descriptive research is to map the terrain of a specific phenomenon. A
study of this type could start with questions such as: What similarities or
contrasts exist between A and B?, where A and B are different
departments in the same organization, different regional operations of the
same firm, or different companies in the same industry. Such descriptive
comparisons can produce useful insights and lead to hypothesisformation.

Explanatory Research
Explanatory studies look for explanations of the nature of certain
relationships. Hypothesis testing provides an understanding of the

relationships that exist between variables. Zikmund (1984) suggests that the
degree of uncertainty about the research problem determines the research
methodology

Descriptive methodology is used in the present study

PRODUCT INNOVATIONSWith its state of art technology, it has witnessed an enormous growth
in its two segments viz.Prefabricated Structure and Monolithic
Construction. These divisions will be the major growth drivers over the
next few years.Sintex is present in the textile business, Producing high
quality fabrics under the brand BVM for its prestige clients Armani, Versace,
Tommy Hilfiger and more. It has formed an alliance with the UK based
textile entity to further improve in the areas of design, structure and finishes
and to adapt some new innovations.
1)Prefab Structures and BT shelters:sintex has manufacturing plants
spread across all five regions of India to cater to the respective regions.
Prefabs are ideal for schools,Kiosks, huts, tent substitutes, hospitals, police
station, site officers etc. Strong demand is expected from municipal
corporation,defense bodies,hospitals,telecom industries,government school
bodies and various other sections with in India. It also exports its

prefabricated structures products to Africa and some parts of Asia for

housing, school, medical centers. Kiosk and among others
2)Monolithic Construction: After establishing its name in Indian plastic
industry it will realize its name in monolithic construction business
too.Sintex has made an sentry in to low cost housing projects in nine states
of India. It uses new and innovative techniques that reduce construction time
and cost. This has helped to grab huge orders from different government and
municipal bodies. The demand for low cost housing is India is expected to
maintain for many years given the immense shortage. Sintex currently has
an order backlog of Rs22bn, Which we believe will grow over time.

EXPANSION STRATEGIES/ INVESTMENT RATIONALE:

Sintex is known as a plastic water tank manufacture in India, over the
years the name has become synonyms with water storage tanks. However
since then it has come a long way and has diversified itself into various other
businesses, albeit in the same product, plastic. It now has the ability to use
its plastics in various forms in various industries. They have entered the
construction and housing space, automobile ancillaries, and power
ancillaries to name a few. In addition the products of sintex have been
accepted by the markets and these divisions have been growing rapidly and
have been the growth drivers.

Prefabricated structures and BT shelters has smoothen the road

ahead
One of the major changes in construction technology has been
prefabricated structures. In a country like India that has a massive dearth of
infrastructure, prefabricated structures (better known as prefabs) have a huge
positive implication. Prefabs have a sprawling market in India in areas
ranging from large industrial and commercial construction to mass housing.
Over the past few years the construction techniques in India have seen a
major improvisation thanks to the adoption of global practices. In the
context of prefabs, the main application areas have so far been industrial
buildings, workshops, etc. mass housing, as a demand driver, is yet to be
tapped.

In rural areas in particular, though housing projects are sponsored by

the government, there is very little supervision that result in poor quality of
construction. The biggest advantage of prefab structures is that there is no
room for error in terms of the basic structures. These structures have been
tested and are known to able to stand firm even in high winds and strong
rains. These prefab structures have a life expectancy of 30 years and it
usually takes a significantly shorter time to construct. Prefab business has
not only contributed to the revenue growth, but also further strengthens the
operating margins, prefabs have managed to generate an EBIDTA margin of
18% for the FY10. We believe margins could sustain at these levels going
forward given the mass orders expected from government. Sintex uses
honeycomb concrete between plastic channels, which makes prefab

structures lighter and easier to transport. As the name suggests, these

structures are pre-made at the factory and minimum work is done on the
actual site. This reduces the cost by-25-40% and the time for erection by 8590% as compared to conventional structures.

Monolithic construction key growth driver

sintexs entry into real estate business has accelerated its growth
levels significantly. Monolithic contributes 22-25% to its revenues and is
expected to rise going forward. This segment caters to the low cost housing
segment, where a major chunk of its sales comes from the government and
state municipal bodies. Currently it operates in 7 states of India and has an
order book of Rs 22bn, On hand. It has chalked out plans to expand its
construction business to all parts of India over the next few years. This
division has been growing at a CAGR of 80% since FY08. Given the acute
shortage of housing and the ever increasing demand of low cost housing in
India we expect the order flow to remain robust. This will ensure this will
ensure this division post a growth of 30% over the next few years. The
monolithic division generates an operating margin of 15% at the present
moment. We believe going forward as project sizes and number of projects
increase the operating margins of the company could increase marginally.

Composite plastic division

The uses of plastic as a substitute for metals has grown significantly
with its application in various manufacturing industry like automobile,

medical, packaging, aerospace etc. with its unique properties like injection
molded, vacuum molded and various other features plastic can be made in
any form as per the requirements and its end use in automobile industries,
which are replacing metal for plastic in the production of car and other
vehicles. Sintex is one of the dominant player in Indian plastic industry has
realized the opportunity and potential in the automobile and acquired one
company in India, Bright auto plast pvt. Ltd and two companies.
Internationally, Nief plastics SA of France and Wausaukee composite Inc. in
the USA. Through its alliance with these companies, sintex has laid a strong
foundation for its custom molding division, with a reach in all geographies
along with India. Sintex manufactures various products like fuel tanks, cable
trays, bus seats, satellite dish, meter boxes, polymeric insulators and other
accessories catering to auto and rural and urban electrification industries.
Besides this it manufactures plastic products used in aerospace and wind
mills.

Valuations:
With higher growth expectation from monolithic, prefab and its
custom molding divisions, we expect revenue to grow 25 to 30% over next
couple of years. At the current price the stocks is trading at a P/E of 10.8x
and an EV/EBIDTA of 10.9x and 8.9x for FY11E and FY12E respectively.
Experts prefer the P/E multiple of 13x for FY11E & arrive at a price target
of Rs.432 and thus recommend a buy on sintex industries with an upside
potential of 20%

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Review of literature paves way for a clear understanding of the areas
of research already undertaken and throws a light on the potential areas
which are yet to be covered. Keeping this view in mind, an attempt has been
made to make a brief survey of the work undertaken on the field of
occupational stress.
This chapter deals with the review of literature concerned with the
subject of this study. Many studies have been conducted. It highlights the
occupational stress from different angles. The review of some of the
important studies are presented below.

Amir Shani and Abraham Pizam in their article Work-Related

Depression among Hotel Employees conducted a study on the depression
of work among hotel employees in Central Florida. They have confirmed the
incidence of depression among workers in the hospitality industry by
evaluating the relationship between the occupational stress and work
characteristics.
Viljoen, J.P., and Rothmann, S. aimed at studying and investigating
the

relationship

between

occupational

stress,

ill

health

and

organizational commitment (2009). The results were that organizational

stressors contributed significantly to ill health and low organizational
commitment. Stress about job security contributed to both physical and
psychological ill health. Low individual commitment to the organization was
predicted by five stressors, namely work-life balance, overload, control, job
aspects and pay.
Schmidt, Denise Rodrigues Costa; Dantas, Rosana Aparecida
Spadoti; Marziale, Maria Helena Palucci and Laus, Ana Maria. In their
work title on Occupational stress among nursing staff in surgical
settings This study aimed at evaluating the presence of occupational stress
among nursing professionals working in surgical settings and investigating
the relations between occupational stress and work characteristics.
Li-fang Zhang conducted a study titled Occupational stress and
teaching approaches among Chinese academics (2009) He suggested
that controlling the self-rating abilities of the participants, the conducive

conceptual change in teaching approach and their role insufficiency

predicated that the conceptual change in teaching strategy is negative.
Kayoko Urakawa and Kazuhito Yokoyam in their journal Sense of
Coherence (SOC) may Reduce the Effects of Occupational Stress on
Mental Health Status among Japanese Factory Workers (2009) has
resulted the adverse effects on mental health due to the job demand and job
stress was positively associated with SOC (sense of coherence), the mental
health status of males in managerial work was adversely negative, where as
it was positive among the female co-workers. Thus, SOC is an important
factor determining the coping ability over the job stress for both the genders
J.E. Agolla in his research article titled Occupational Stress Among
Police Officers: The Case of Botswana Police Service, (2009) has
conducted a study among the police to find out work stress symptoms and
coping strategies among the police service in Botswana. This study reveals
that the police work stressors are; getting injured while on duty and the use
of force when the job demands to do so, etc. The coping strategies were
identified as exercising, socializing, healthy eating or diets, career planning
and employee training.
Connolly, John F and Willock, Joyce and Hipwell, Michele and
Chisholm, Vivienne in their research titled Occupational Stress &
Psychological Well Being following University Relocation (2009) they
describe and analyze that management standards for work related stress
(demand, support, control, role, relationships and change) can be analyzed

by examining 1) overall levels of psychological strain 2) job satisfaction,

and 3) the psychosocial working conditions
Chen, Wei-Qing; Wong, Tze-Wai; Yu, Tak-Sun in their book titled
Direct and interactive effects of occupational stress and coping on
ulcer-like symptoms among Chinese male off-shore oil workers, (2009)
has suggested that gastric/ulcer like health problems, age, educational
qualification, marital status has been positively associated with occupational
stress and internal behavior coping methods, but negatively associated with
external/social behavior coping methods.
Chang-qin Lu; Oi-ling Siu; Wing-Tung Au; Sandy S. W. Leung in
their article titled Manager's occupational stress in state- owned and
private enterprises in the People's Republic of China (2009) has showed
that managers in private enterprises experienced higher levels of
occupational stressors and psychological strains than those in state-owned
enterprises. Moreover, Organizational structure and climate was also found
to be a major stressor when predicting both psychological and physical
strain in both economic sectors.
Stewart Collins in his book titled Statutory Social Workers:
Stress, Job Satisfaction, Coping, Social Support and Individual
Differences (2008) he is highlighted that healthy or unhealthy coping
strategies have gender difference and the importance of support in various
forms with in the work setting, whereas mutual group support accompanied
by individual differences are linked to good self-esteem, personal hardiness
and resilience.

Richardson, K. M., and Rothsetin, H.R. in their article titled

Effects of occupational stress management intervention programs
(2008) they provided an empirical review of stress management
interventions, employing meta-analysis procedures. The results also revealed
that relaxation interventions were the most frequent type of intervention.
Further, there were a few stress interventions focused on the organizational
level. More specific results also indicated that cognitive-behavioral
interventions produced larger effects than other types of interventions.

SUGGESTIONS
First and foremost I would like to suggest that, the employees who are
in sintex industries must have privacy so that can work efficiently.
The working hours should not be firmly rigid, so that the employees
can spare some time to their family and can carry out their personal
obligations.

There must be proper timing process in industry so that the employees

can easily access which each and every job when the job rotation
takes place.
The key person in industries has to see to the efficiency of the
employee and must assign the work.
There must be hike in pay-package once in a while according to the
ability, qualified, workload and experienced employees.
The employee has to be identified by his work at sintex and have to
hike the pay, if not it leads a way to indirect means of stress.
Favoritisms, Casteism should not take place at work.
Performance must be evaluated properly by the key person and the
employee have to be promoted.
Unplanned, unexpected work must be avoided by a key person at
sintex to the employee.
Training programs should be conducted from time to time so that an
employee does not get bored from their job.
As their job is monotonous, it must be interesting when some
entertainment, trips, celebrating functions at the work place, so that
employees to refreshed to work.
Sintex industries should try to adopt certain measures to enhance team
spirit and co-ordination among the employees.
The workload in the sintex should be reduced so that the employees
will not be stressed and can give their best at work.
There must be supportive staff at sintex so that the employees can
be more focused to achieve the settled target.
The should be a tea break, once in a while break in between their
work, so that the employee wont be stressed and the productivity will
automatically increases.
Once when all the suggestion is taken in to account the employees
will be more satisfied person at work.

CONCLUSION
Findings and suggestions are based on the survey conducted
and these points are to be looked in to and steps are to be taken in this
regard for higher growth.
Stress is something that happens in our daily lives and is usually
associated with a particular event such as work, family or other
responsibilities. There are many situations that we cannot control, but there
are ways to control how we deal with certain situations.
Effective stress management is something that our lives can go a little
more smoothly. Stress management is a simple and taking a walk. It was

been proven that physical activities would improve a persons mental health,
help with depression, and relieve the side effects of stress. This makes a
persons heart rate increase and will be more likely to be affected by stress .it
is vital that stress management techniques are implemented our daily lives.
Coping with stress is an individualized task and one method over another
may not be superior. A person that is stressed takes so much away from his
are her health and performance levels.
Employees at sintex industries are too much stressed with their job
with heavy workload, so the employees expect some refreshing events to
add up in their work place like entertainment, trips, tea breaks, intervals once
in a while during lumps of work. Accordingly the employees expect hike in
their salary from their work performance but even then the employees are
very co-operative and have a very good high regard and respect toward the
sintex image and its future.
Finally I would like to conclude by saying that Its a great
advantage to have good insight about such industries before the end of the
course .My suggestions are truly honored and accepted by sintex . This has
satisfied me to a greater extent and at the same time I am motivated to
carry out such projects in future which would enhance my career and the
industry has well.
