SUPERVISOR
Anis Nurashikin Nordin (ECE) & Maizirwan Mel (BIO)
SUMMARY
Electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) method can be used as a valuable tool for real time monitoring of cell behavior such as
attachment, mobility, and growth. Changes in impedance of the cells due to growth and attachment can be modeled as an equivalent
circuit consisting of resistors and capacitors of both the cell culture media and the cells. Cell-based sensing techniques provide
continuous and real-time measurements making it more efficient compared to existing methods of microscopic observation. In this
work, a biosensor which measures the impedance in breast cancer cells, Michigan Cancer Foundation 7 or MCF-7 will be designed
and tested. The biosensor will be designed and fabricated on a printed circuit board and combined with a small Teflon cell holder.
Impedance measurements of the MCF-7 cells will be used to deduce the cancer cell behaviors in different environments. An electrical
model of the cells will be developed and simulated. This electrical equivalent circuit will provide a theoretical electrical model of the
biological cancer cells.

OBJECTIVES
1.

Design and development of a programmable photoresist spinner
SUPERVISOR
Anis Nurashikin Nordin (ECE)
SUMMARY
Photolithography is a critical process in the manufacturing of silicon integrated circuits (ICs). The spinner is an essential device for the
deposition of a uniform and well-controlled photoresist layer on top of the silicon wafer. To attain uniform layer thickness, it is crucial
to have a high angular speed, which leads to a high centrifugal force that acts on the resist fluid to move away from the center of the
substrate. The Programmable Photoresist Spinner improves the precision control of the angular speed and acceleration. This component
will aid in the development of discrete silicon devices such as the ICs for the micro-fabrication purposes.
The program prompts the user for inputs and the Motorola 68HC11 / Intel 8088 processes high-level commands and outputs signals to
the motor control subsystem. The system is designed to accept user inputs for key parameters such as speed, acceleration and spin times
for a given load.

Influence of Velocity on the Handover Delay propagation at Road-Side Units (RSUs)
SUPERVISOR
Dr. Rashid A. Saeed
SUMMARY

In WLAN based vehicular communications the main challenge is the high velocity of the stations (STAs), which leads to frequent
handover between access points (AP), which called road-side units (RSUs). Many publications addressed the IEEE802.11 amendments
communication channel between AP i.e. 802.11f/r/s; however, all these standards struggle at high velocity scenario as in vehicular
communication scenario. Some other upper layers solutions has been implemented successfully in mobile-IP techniques, but this also
associated with unavoidable delay especially in the real time communication i.e. VOIP. In this project we will introduce a new field in
the TDMA frame for backbone communication. TDMA is used as an encapsulation protocol for CSMA/CA to avoid the delay
associated with contention in CSMA/CA. the influence of the velocity on handover will be studied for the previous solutions and
compared with the current proposals. The new scheme will be simulated in ns-2.

OBJECTIVES
1. To enhance the delay propagation associated with RSUs interworking
2. To reduce the influence of velocity in HO delay,
3. Improve the QoS for the real time applications.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
1.

Literature review

2. develop a new scheme for RSU interworking,

3. simulate the developed scheme

SUPERVISOR
Teddy Surya Gunawan
SUMMARY
Cluster computer has been used for high performance computing platform for scientific and engineering applications. Cluster computers
is a group of linked computers working together closely so that they form a single computer. Basic image processing routines, such as
edge detection using Sobel operator, Canny edge detector, Robert operator, and other algorithms, are very well suited for parallel
processing, especially if the image size is large. In 2006, new toolboxes, i.e. Parallel Computing Toolbox and Matlab Distributed
Computing Server, were introduced in Matlab that facilitates the design and implementation of parallel algorithms. The objective of this
project is to develop and implement parallel edge detection algorithms on cluster system. The performance of the parallel algorithm will
be evaluated in terms of speed up, while the efficiency of the parallel program will be analyzed using Amdahls law. It is expected that
the speed up achieved will be as close as possible to the number of computers in a cluster provided that an efficient parallelization can
be accomplished.

Modulation Schemes in OFDM Systems
SUPERVISOR
Khaizuran Abdullah
SUMMARY

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier system which utilizes a parallel processing technique allowing
the simultaneous transmission of data on many closely spaced, orthogonal sub-carriers. In addition, modulation techniques are
significant to ensure that an OFDM symbol is mapped from binary to complex signal with amplitude and phase represented in real and
imaginary number for transmitting the signal. On the other hand, the signal is de-mapped or extracted from complex signal to recover
back the OFDM symbol in the receiver.
This project will consider an image application with comparisons of QAM modulations for Fourier and wavelet based OFDM systems.
The experimental results about BER performances for different types of QAM modulations in OFDM systems will be obtained.
OBJECTIVES
1.

To study the modulation schemes for OFDM transceiver.

2. To simulate OFDM techniques using MATLAB and observe the effect of using different modulation techniques.
3. To obtain the BER results with respect to different types of modulation schemes.

Rain Rate Measurement for Microwave Attenuation Prediction in Malaysia
SUPERVISOR
Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam
SUMMARY
Terrestrial microwave system is the backbone line for mobile communication industry. In tropical region particularly in Malaysia, rain
attenuation is the major constraint for implementing microwave system above 10 GHz [1]. The high rainfall rate leads to outages that
compromise the availability and quality of service, making this one of the most critical factors in terrestrial and earth-to-satellite link
design. Therefore, to maintain the reliability of the system it is important to predict rain fade margin accurately. The rain intensity
distribution is the only parameter which can predict the rain attenuation for microwave propagation. This project aims to measure realtime rain intensity and model its distribution in Malaysia.

Scintillation Measurement and Analysis for Ku-Band Satellite Signals
SUPERVISOR
Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam
SUMMARY
Scintillation arising from scattering atmospheric refractive index discontinuities and resulting in random fades and enhancements of the
received signals amplitude about a mean level is an important source of degradation especially on low-availability satellite
communication systems operating at frequencies above 10 GHz [10] [11]. The mathematical complexity of the problem of turbulent
scattering and the randomness of its occurrence necessitate a strong dependence on satellite beacon measurement to develop empirical
models for scintillation prediction. Before using the measured raw beacon propagation data for scintillation studies, contributions to data
fluctuations by other propagation factors must be excluded [11]. Based on the data analysis for tropical country that observed
tropospheric scintillation in the short and long term experiment on earth space paths with moderate elevation angle. This project aims to
measure real-time satellite signal from MEASAT3 and extract the scintillation data and analyze it.

TITLE
Cantilever Beam vibration into useful energy
SUPERVISOR
Sheroz Khan
SUMMARY
Emerging application fields, the need to increase the life of electronic devices, increased computational capabilities that require more
energy and drastic reduction in device volume have been drivers of this field. Power management and wireless connection are becoming
major issues in many applications. Research communities all over the world are working to find solutions and harvesting methods to
optimize the power issue in sensors with the specific goal of implementing autonomous sensors. We discuss these concepts and two
examples: an autonomous sensing device and an energy harvester, capable to convert for us vibrations into energy.
The contactless working principle consists of an actuation principle based on a Lorentz force source: when forcing a sinusoidal current
in a solenoid facing the movable structure, a variable magnetic induction (Be) is generated, and simultaneously it induces eddy current
density in the conductive plate (J). The interaction between the currents and the radial component of the magnetic induction gives a
force along the z-axis (Fz) of the structure implying displacement.
The detection principle is based on a second periodic current having a higher frequency with respect to the one previously mentioned
and forced in a solenoid. The induced magnetic field creates eddy-current density in the conductive plate and generates a magnetic field
Bs. The oscillations of the mass generate an amplitude modulation on the carrier signal, and the information can be extracted using a
pick-up coil.
OBJECTIVES
1. To make an analysis to derive equations relating mechanical vibration of the beam into oscillating current.
2. To conduct measurement of designed system for obtaining data between vibrations and resulting current
oscillations.
3. To discuss and analyze the measurement results
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
1.

2. Design (including simulation) and fabrication of the vibrations to oscillations system

SUMMARY
The acquisition of ambient energy for powering small electronic devices such as watches, devices used hand for monitoring purposes in
locations to which wiring accessibility is either hazardous or their maintenance is costly. No matter how little, but all such devices need
batteries as sources for continuous supply of energy.
The acquisition of ambient energy into a usable form is called energy harvesting. Examples of this ambient energy include light,
vibrations or oceanic waves, solar or wind energy. Energy harvesting can be employed on a small and a large scale depending on the
application it is being used for. Small scale energy harvesting is used in watches, and other electronic components employed in animals
and inaccessible locations for monitoring purposes.
Thermoelectric sensors are semiconductor devices that generate a usable voltage proportional to the difference in between the body and
room temperature. Of course, in commercially available devices an array of such junctions is used for producing positive and negative
terminals with a voltage difference of a required level. The project involves simulation using suitable software such as Cadence,
