righttoworklaw.PassedbyRepublicanpoliticiansinLansingin2013,thenewlawcauseda
noticeabledropinunionmembershipfrom16.3%downto14.5%.Thetrendislikelyto
continueasmoreunioncontracts,typicallythreeyearslong,cometoanend.
Laterthisyear,theUnitedAutoWorkers(UAW)willfeeltheeffectsofthelawasthe
contractswithbigcarproducingcompaniesexpire.
Righttoworksaysworkersarenotrequiredtobelongtotheunionataunionizedwork
place,despitethevotesanddecisionsofthemajority.Itcreatesadivisionamongstthe
workersandweakenstheirabilitytoactinconcertforgoodcontractsandtoenforcesafety
workrules,fairnessandequality.
In2013,therewere3.9millionemployedworkersinMichigan,ofwhom633,000wereunion
members.Nowin2014,thereare4millionemployedworkersofwhom585,000areunion
members.ThenumberofemployedworkersinMichiganincreasedby139,000overall,while
thenumberofunionmembersdecreasedby48,000,hurtingtheunionizationrateevenmore.
Thestatisticsshowthatahigherpercentageofworkerscoveredbyunioncontractsstopped
payingtheirdues.Thesefreeridersbenefitfromtheunioncontractthattheircoworkers
negotiateandpayfor.
MichiganRepublicansalsostrippedteachersoftheabilitytopaytheirunionduesviadirect
depositwiththeiremployer.Governmentworkersknowitasduescheckoffand,despiteits

popularity,Republicanspassedalawdenyingthisbasicrighttoteachers.
AcrossLakeMichigan,inthestateofWisconsin,Republicansarethreateningasimilarlawand
unionmembersarebeginningtomobilizetofightit.JacobFlomisthecreatorofaFacebook

tokeepourstateunionstrong.FightGovernorWalker'sunionbustingagendawithmass

Unionsarebasedonworkersjoiningtogethertoactasoneinrelationshiptotheirbossesand
owners.Unioncontractsprovidemillionsofworkersaroundtheworldwithhigherwages,
betterhealthcare,sicktimeoff,vacationsandachancetodefendthemselvesfromarbitrary
disciplineandfiring.Unionmemberslikenursesandhealthcareworkerscanenforcehealth
andsafetyrulesforthemselvesandthepublictheyserve.
Republicansplantofinishoffunions,attackingandoutlawingthemstatebystate.The
DemocraticPartystandsidle,feigningsurprise.JudgesrulingsinU.S.courtsarethreatening
todoawaywithpublicsectorunionsoverthenextfiveyearsaswell.
UnionmembersintheU.S.tendtolivebetterlivesthannonunionworkersandcommand
morerespectfromtheirbosses.BureauofLaborStatisticsshowmedianincomeforaunion
workerin2014was$970perweek,whilenonunionwas$763.

Theterm"righttowork"impliesthatunionsaresomehowdeprivingpeopleoftherightto
employment.It'sOrwellianismatitsfinest.
IworkedatmyoldshopbeforetheyhadaUnion.Onenighttheentiredayshiftwentoutfor
drinksafterwork,stayedoutallnightandcalledinsickthenextday.Thedayafterthatthere
wasapetitongoingaroundtobringtheunionin.
ThelocaloftheCAW(CanadianAutoWorkersnowcalledUnifor)towhichmyshopbelongs
isnotoriouslycorruptandoftensideswithmanagement,acceptsconcessions,etc.Despite
thoseproblems,thingsimprovedalmostimmediatelyoncewebroughttheunionin.
Theantiunionclichespeoplespoutareenoughtomakeyoulosefaithinpeople.
ConservativesseemtothinkthattheywouldallbeCEOsifitwasn'tforthosedamnunions
holdingthemback.
Myfavoriteis"ifyoudon'tlikeyourjob,youshouldgogetabetterone."Asiftheclock
wouldn'tturnbackto1830overnightifunionswereabolished.

worker.Therewasateacher'sstrikeinmycityandmostofmycoworkerswerecomplaining
aboutthewhiny,overpaid,lazyteachersgoingonstrike.Peopleweresayingthingslike:"You
don'tseemegoingonstrikewhenIhaveabadday!"and"Ihavearealjob,notlikethese
teachers!"

ManyworkersarereadytofightRighttoWorkbecauseRighttoWorkisnotaboutdemocracy
orchoice,itsanattackfrombigbusinessesontheorganizationsofworkingpeoplethat
bargainforbetterwagesandrespect.RighttoWorkmeansbanningwhatscalledaunion
securityclausefromallunionandemployercontracts.Almostallprivatesectorunionsin
Wisconsincurrentlybargainintotheircontractssuchclauseswhichallowtheuniontocollect
duesfromalltheworkersitrepresents.
Businessownerswillfindanywaytheycantounderminetheeffectivenessofworkersright
tocollectivelybargain,andmakingtheargumentthatindividualworkershaverightsthatare
opposedtothecollectivevoteofthemembersisawaytounderminecollectivebargaining
anddeliverweakercontracts.
Workersoftheseindustriesknowthatbusinessownersdontcareaboutdemocracyorchoice
atall.Unionswillhavefewerresourcesandworkplaceswillbecomedivided.Unionswillbe
underpressuretoacceptconcessionsforextendedcontracts.
Thesameargumentaboutchoicewasmadeinthe1940sbySouthernsegregationists,some
whomweretheoriginalpromotersofRighttoWork,whosawracistdiscriminationasachoice
andarightoftheemployersandpropertyownersandwhosawunionsasathreat.
AsMartinLutherKing,Jr.oncesaid:Inourgloriousfightforcivilrights,wemustguard
againstbeingfooledbyfalseslogans,suchasrighttowork.Itisalawtorobusofourcivil
rightsandjobrights.Itspurposeistodestroylaborunionsandthefreedomofcollective
bargainingbywhichunionshaveimprovedwagesandworkingconditionsofeveryone.
RighttoWorklegislationcouldbepassedasearlyasApril.WorkersinWisconsinwillhaveto
doeverythingtheycantofightback,fromtakingthestruggletothestatecapitolbacktothe
