The article describes the structure of the tobolsk bishop establishment as the
control center of the Siberian diocese and its evolution due to the opening of
the tobolsk archdiocese in 1621 until the end of the 17th century. The author
reconstructs the control bodies and their functions on the basis of published
sources and archival materials. The paper appendix gives the list of the names
of tobolsk bishops residence.

tHE tobolSk ZnamEnSky monaStEry in tHE firSt

Half of tHE 17tH cEntury: itS riSE and making
The article deals with the early period of the tobolsk monastery history
described on the basis of complex analysis of the well-known and new sources.
The paper suggests that the monastic community appeared in tobolsk before
16091610 and questions the existence of Zosimo-Savvatiyevsky monastery.
The author also shows the history of construction and development of the
Dormition and then Znamensky monasteries and describes the reasons of
the monastery transfer to the new place. The article proves that the monks,
headed by the archimandrite tarasius, were the transfer initiators but, at the
same time, the significant role in the monastery life was played by investors,
people who were in the government service. The structure of the monastic
community and sources of its existence are analyzed.
The article considers the control system of the cenobitic monastery. It
establishes that the monastery was regularly used as the place of disgraced
monks exile and shows their further life in the monastery. It is suggested
that over time some part of exiled monks became members of the monastic
community. The author comes to the conclusion that the mid- and late 1630's
was the most unstable period of the monastery life when the community lived
without Father Superior.

This article deals with the monastic colonization in the kungur county of the
Perm region in the last third of the 17th century, the means of expanding the
monastery territories, the problems of monasteries interaction with the local
russian and tatar population. The author studied both published resources
and the materials of the State archive of ancient acts. The main objects of
the analysis are the tohtarevskaya bogoroditskaya hermitage and the monastic
patrimonies of the Sylvensk christmas hermitage of Pyskorsk monastery
and the Exaltation hermitage of the Solikamsk monastery.

tHE Early dEVEloPmEnt of tHE liturgical

EigHt-modE SyStEm in JEruSalEm
The present article is dedicated to the early period of the history of the liturgical
eight modes (tones) system in Jerusalem. based on different greek, Syriac,
arabic, georgian and armenian sources, the author describes the place and
development of liturgical sructures of eight modes within the early Palestinian
worship. The first elements of the liturgical eight modes system might have
appeared in Jerusalem public worship in the 5th century or, more probably, in
the second half of the 4th century.

The article is devoted to the iconography of the icon depicting one of the
wonders of the lifetime of St. Sergius the appearance of the mother of god.
It reveals the meaning and content of the icons from the earliest ones dated
from the late 15th century to the recent ones of the early 20th century. The
author registers the development of semantic and iconographic programs and
emphasizes the features of some icons.

on tHE QuEStion of tHE dEcoration of latVian

old bEliEVErS manuScriPtS
The article deals with the problem of studying the decoration of books
and manuscripts belonging to the old believers communities in latvia, in
particular the grebenshchikov community in riga. using the comparative
method and the vast range of materials (the study involved 175 manuscripts),
the author identifies three groups of the manuscript decoration.
The first group represents the manuscripts with the Pomeranian style
decoration; the second group includes the manuscripts with the ornaments,
imitating the style of early printed books, and the third group consists of the
manuscripts with unique authors design.

The article is dedicated to the commented translation of the 40th hymn of

the Divine love of St. Symeon the New Theologian (ca. 9491022), the
greatest byzantine mystic and theologian of the Divine light and love. The
topic of the hymn is the confession of the necessity for a christian to follow
the path of christs Passions, if he or she wants to be glorified and deified
by god. It is underlined in the short introductory article by D. makarov that
St. Symeon has never dissociated the historical christ of the Passions and of
the resurrection from the sacramental one, i. e., from his holy body and
blood of the Eucharist.

THE PUBLICATION, INTRODUCTORY ARTICLE
AND NOTES BY SVETLANA G. BUTKINA
The present publication calls the readers attention to the first part of archpriest
Nicolay butkins (18821937) autobiographical novel Wine-growers. The
author called the first part of the novel The Sower and it describes the events
connected with the establishing of the orthodox Simeonovsky brotherhood
in the provincial town of Shadrinsk and the life of this town in 19161917. The
presented facts and the authors reflections are autobiographical (archpriest
Nicolay butkin is represented in this novel as priest grigory Zagumennykh).
The novel is of great value because it provides its readers with the authors
reflections on the church realities of that time and on the need to revive the
evangelical norms of life, as well as with the personal search for understanding
of his pastoral ministry. The novel gives its readers the chance to meet the real
people of that time, to revive the historical memory of the tragic pages of the
church and the Fatherland history of the early 20th century.
In the preface to the publication we were the first to reconstruct the
milestones of archpriest N. butkins life on the basis of available sources
and research literature. We also gave the review of the archpriests literary
heritage, taking into account the materials published in the church press and
the archival materials, which have never been published.

THE PUBLICATION, INTRODUCTORY ARTICLE
AND NOTES BY N. J. SUKHOVA
In the publication are presented the letters of the former professor of the
kiev ecclesiastical academy P. P. kudryavtsev to the former colleague at the
academy professor a. a. Dmitrievsky. It continues a series of publications
of archival documents related to the life and work of the famous russian
liturgist and orientalist a. a. Dmitrievsky. Surviving letters cover the period
from may 1924 to June 1929. at this time, the russian higher ecclesiastical
school has almost ceased to exist. and the traditions of russian theology
as a whole were under the imminent threaten of the complete cessation. It
were only single individuals who managed to bring to an end their scientific
investigations commenced earlier. Those included the addressee of the letters
under publication here, a. a. Dmitrievsky. but the danger to lose the tradition
encouraged also other former professors of theological academies to collect,
to systematize and to save for the future the memory of the outstanding
theologians-researchers, ecclesiastical figures, as well as of their scientific
discoveries and achievements. This process is reflected in the letters of
P. P. kudryavtsev, so they are a kind of monument to the pre-revolutionary
higher spiritual school. The published letters are preserved in the archival
fund of a. a. Dmitrievsky in the manuscripts department of the National
library of russia.
