Child Development
How can you tell if its colic?

Colic
and

Crying
About 20 percent of all babies
develop colic, a catch-all phrase
for uncontrollable crying in an
otherwise healthy baby. A baby
with colic cries or fusses for more
than three hours a day, for more
than three days in one week.
It occurs with equal frequency
among first- and later - born
children, and in boys and girls.

Its hard to know who finds

colic harder, a parent or a baby.
A colicky baby is obviously in
distress, uncomfortable, and
cant soothe himself. But a parent
can be just as upset - listening to
a babys cry for hours on end is
enough to drive you to tears of
your own. A parents discomfort
can include feeling helpless.

Child Development
Some breastfed babies seem to
be bothered if mom indulges in a
lot of spicy food, wheat products,
or cruciferous vegetables. Again,
to test if these foods are making
your
baby
uncomfortable,
avoid eating cabbage, broccoli,
cauliflower, garlic, caffeine,
alcohol, and other irritants for
a few days. If your baby seems
better, reintroduce the foods
into your diet, one at a time,
allowing a few days between
reintroductions. It should be
fairly easy to pinpoint which one
is causing your baby problems:
if he starts fussing again after
a food is reintroduced, then
youll know thats the offending
substance. Youll have to abstain
from it until your baby outgrows
his sensitivity, which is usually
at around 3 months, but thats
a small price to pay for a happy

the sound of close crying.

Some experts believe that
over-stimulating a baby can
make colic worse, so keep the
room quiet and dark. And if
you dont feel that holding her
is helping, put her in her cot or
bassinette for a few minutes.
Your baby may cry less if she
is kept in motion. Carry her in
a sling, rock her in a swing, or
push her around in her pram.
Try massaging her tummy
very gently with clockwise
movements to help move
along trapped gas.

Fun Family Hiking

on the Central Coast

by Steven Smith

Getting outdoors was one of

my favorite activities when I
was little. Most children love
to get outside and enjoy the
abundance of plants and animals
on the Central Coast.

for planning hikes in San Luis

Obispo County at: http://
santalucia.sierraclub.org.
For
Santa Barbara County hikes go to:
www.santabarbaratrailguide.
com.

Going on a family hike is a great

way for children to get exercise,
spend quality time together,
learn more about nature, and
have lots of fun. Kids like beach
hikes, nature hikes, bird hikes,
rock hikes, flower hikes, and
even night hikes!

You can plan your hike around

the distance of the trail, the type
of terrain, things you can see on
the hike (like plants, insects, and
animals) and historical or cultural
sites you might visit. The Central
Coast offers amazing diversity
of terrain and views. You can
find oceanfront cliffs; coves and
tide pools; white sand beaches
and windswept dunes; light
houses; stream-fed canyons and
waterfalls; redwood forests or
decidous trees; canyon lakes;
mountain peaks; and varied
ecological habitats! Whatever
hiking location you choose,
incredible scenery and fresh air
await you.

At www.slocountyparks.com,
you can find resources and
information about the trails
at certain parks. El Chorro
and Bishops Peak are two
of my favorites listed there.
Of course, specific trails vary
in difficulty and length. The
distance and terrain of the trail
are very important factors to
consider when deciding what
little children can handle while
hiking. I wouldnt recommend
steep, winding paths or paths
along oceanfront cliffs. The
things children can see on a
hike are also very important for
entertainment.

Here are some of the many places

that your family might enjoy:
Elfin Forest Natural Area in
Morro Bay;
Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in
Los Osos;

San Luis Obispo County Trail Oso Flaco Lake Trail in Guadalupe;
Guide by the Santa Lucia Chapter Los Osos Oaks State Reserve in
of the Sierra Club (3rd Edition)
Los Osos;

Pismo Beach;

Call Our Hotline:

Lake

Cuesta Ridge Botanical Area in

Santa Margarita, and
Lopez Lake Recreation Area in
Arroyo Grande.
Things children might look for
and discuss while hiking include:
animals tracks; geology and
rocks; plants and birds; and
insects (be sure they know which
ones to avoid). Spend some time
reading with your child about
the plants and animals you might
encounter on your hike and the
type of landscape you might see.
Some great guide books to
bring along include: Shorebirds
by Jonathan P. Latimer; The
National Audubon Society First
Field Guide to Birds by Scott
Weidensaul; Smithsonion Kids
Field Guides: Birds of North
America West by Jo S. Kittinger;
Central Coast Wildflowers by
Mary Coffeen; Wildflowers of San
Luis Obispo, California produced
by the SLO Chapter of the
California Native Plant Society;
and Early Uses of California
Plants by Edward K. Balls.
It is very important to teach
children common trail rules
and hiking etiquette.
A
good website featuring this
information can be found at
www.abc-of-hiking.com.
Go a step further and talk
with your kids about hiking
dangers.
Children need to
know what to do if they become
separated from the family
or if they become lost. You
can explain how to avoid the
types of hazards people might
encounter on a hike, such as
poison oak, bees, poisonous

snakes, and ticks. Make sure

your children understand not to
drink untreated water that may
contain parasites and bacteria.
There are a number of excellent
books that adults can use to
learn more about hiking. For
example, flip through The Joy of
Hiking: Hiking the Trail Master
Way by John McKinney or The
Hiking Companion: Getting the
Most from the Trail Experience
by Michael W. Robbins to read
up on tips for hiking with babies,
small children, and teens.
Before you set out on a hike,
always be sure to check the
weather!
Bring appropriate
clothing and gear, water, snacks,
sun protection, and a phone and
flashlight (for safety).
I have found that hiking helps me
reconnect with nature. I forget
about my everyday worries and
observe how plants and animals
adapt and make the most of
what they have. We really are
fortunate to live where we can
easily visit the ocean, mountains,
dunes and forests. So round up
the family and start exploring all
the great trails!

Are you Following

a Tax Smart
Investment Strategy?
by Molly Peoples

Were getting closer to April 15:

Tax Filing Day. While there may
not be much you can do to change
your results for the 2014 tax year,
you can certainly look closely at
your tax returns to find areas you
might be able to improve next
year and one such area is your
investment portfolio.
Of course, you may also find
opportunities in other places,
too. Could you have taken more
deductions?
Could you have
moved some of your debts into
a tax-deductible loan, such as a
home equity loan or line of credit?
Youll want to consult with your
tax advisor to determine areas of
potential savings.
However, you might be able to

brighten your tax picture by

making
some
tax-smart
investment moves, such as the
following:
Resist the urge to trade
frequently.
It can be costly
to constantly buy and sell
investments. In addition to the
commissions you may incur, and
the possibility that such excessive
trading can impede a consistent
investment strategy, you could
rack up a sizable tax bill. If you
sell an asset that youve held for
a year or less, any profit you earn
is considered a short-term capital
gain, which is taxed at the same
rate as your ordinary income.
So, for example, if you bought
Investment ABC for $1,000 on
January 5, 2014, and you sold it

Personal Knowledgeable Service by Flexible Appointment

ron@ccflutes.com
for $1,250 on Dec. 31, 2014, youd
be taxed on your $250 gain. If you
are in the 28% tax bracket, youd
owe $70 in taxes. But if you had
waited until January 6, 2015, and
you sold your investment for the
same $250 gain, youd pay the
more favorable long-term capital
gains tax rate of 15%, which
translates into $37.50 in taxes
just over half of what youd owe
at the short-term rate. If you
habitually sold investments after
owning them less than a year, the
taxes could really add up, so try to
be a buy-and-hold investor.

Increase
your
401(k)
contributions.
If you arent
already participating in your
401(k) or similar plan, start now.
And if you are contributing, boost
your contributions whenever your
salary goes up. You typically put
pretax dollars in your 401(k), so
the more you add, the lower your
annual taxable income. Plus, your
earnings can grow tax deferred.
Max out on your IRA.
Depending on your income level,
you may be able to deduct some,
or all, of your contributions to
your traditional IRA and these
deductible contributions can
lower your taxable income. Plus,

CCFlutes.com
your investment can grow tax
deferred. (Keep in mind, though,
that taxes will be due upon
withdrawal, and any withdrawals
made before you reach 59 are
subject to a 10% IRS penalty.)
If you contribute to a Roth IRA,
your contributions are never
deductible and wont lower
your taxable income, but your
earnings are distributed tax free,
provided youve had your account
at least five years and you are
older than 59. In 2015, you can
contribute $5,500 to your IRA,
plus an additional $1,000 catch-up
contribution if you are 50 or older,
and its almost always a good idea
to max out your contributions
each year.
By following a buy-and-hold
investment strategy and using
those tax-advantaged accounts
available to you, you may be able
to help yourself at tax time and
beyond.

I recently found out that there

is a time capsule buried at a
local school. The school was
the home of what was known
as the Alternative School,
which eventually became what
is known as Teach School. Val
Wright was a popular teacher at
the Alternative School and she is
still teaching. I had a chance to
talk to Val and he informed me
that he and others may dig up
the time capsule that was buried
about 30 years ago. Val probably
remembers the items that were
buried, but I am hoping I will
be invited when someone digs
up the treasure buried by the
students and staff. I know it
will not contain a bag of gold,
but treasure comes in all shapes
and sizes. I think letters written
by students 30 years ago are
priceless treasures.

Who knows what buried

instances when the traveler was

retrieve their treasure. There is
a very good possibility that bags
of gold could remain buried in

little town of San Luis Obispo. It

Flighty Goats and

Fearful Hedgehogs

Less traditional sources disagree.

The folks at Wordinfo, and Anu
Gargs A Word a Day (a fascinating
daily glance into etymology),
appear to have used a bit more
scrutiny. These sources explain
that the similarity of capro, or goat,
to the word capricious shifted
the meaning toward flighty,
pranking, goatlike behavior, and
away from its original meaning.
These sources claim capricious
was actually constructed from
the word parts, capo-, head, and
riccio, hedgehog. Thats right;
the word in question may have
initially meant hedgehog-head. In
the early 1500s, capricious started
out meaning afraid, or hairstanding-on-end, like the spines
of the hedgehog. After years the
similar term capro- rubbed off
enough to shove the meaning of
the word toward goatliness (or,
goat allies might claim, toward
perceived goatliness).

Irish folklore (poo-pooed by, yet

us that because leprechauns
are sprites known for making or
repairing a single shoe, the name
comes from leithbragan, which
marries leith, meaning half, with
brag meaning brogue.
While one source bestows

another Irish tale defines the

Despite all this information, if
you find yourself at a bar on
Saint Patricks Day, and someone
sits at the next stool and begins
repairing a single shoe, speaking in
a lisping falsetto, and/or carrying
a purse, its wisest to keep your
assumptions to yourself. And
isnt that always true.

What do you offer

Central Coast families?

Display advertising in Central Coast Family offers an

extraordinary value. Our loyal readers are relatively
mature, prosperous, and educated family members
in two of Californias most affluent counties. They
take an active role in all aspects of parenting and
purchasing.
Every issue includes original feature articles and
calendar listings for six weeks of local family events.
Your ad is viewed the whole month through; not
discarded after a day or a week.
We offer the lowest rates in our region (and discounts
for non-profits or ads running 3 months or more).
All of our advertisers also enjoy FREE: full color
printing; basic graphic design; preferred placement
options; monthly edits; and website exposure!

useful information and encouragement for families in
this area. Our whole family enjoys reading CCF and
we refer to your event pages often. Our customers

I have received more phone calls from being in
Central Coast Family than any other place I have
advertised (including the Yellow Pages and Internet
Yellow Pages). Thanks for everything!
