LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
Put a spring in your step

March officially houses the beginning of spring even though we Wisconsinites

know better. Were well prepared for a few more snows and freezing temps.
Yet, while those gentle showers, warmer temps and colorful flowers might still
be a few weeks away, that doesnt mean we cant enjoy a renewal all our own. Why
not let March be the month you rejuvenate your passion for well-being? Whether
this means youll focus on taking your fitness practices to the next level, supporting or improving your mental health, improving your nutrition, engaging in a
hobby or pursuit you care about, March is a great time to turn your attention to
yourself and we want to help you along this journey.
One of things we love best about Natures Pathways is the opportunities to try
new things and adapt them to our needs and desires. Tips found in our expertwritten articles might appeal to you right off the bat, or they might inspire something inside of you, motivating you to try something youve never before had the
guts or background knowledge to do!
TAKE IT FROM ONE OF OUR READERS:

Im not planning to have a child any time soon, so I used to simply flip past the
Healthy Kids articles and pregnancy-focused pieces in the magazine. But I have
been feeling quite a bit stressed and lost in my life lately. One article suggested
providing help or support to others as a way to rekindle ones spirit, and it suddenly
occurred to me: Just because the child-focused articles in Natures Pathways dont
have an immediate impact on my life, doesnt mean that they wont be life-changing
for someone else. So I gave a few copies to my friends who are parents or are planning to be.
This simple act of service paid off! It was so rewarding to hear my friends say,
Wow! Thats the type of birth experience I want, or to see them try out new ways
to connect with their children.
We encourage you to uncover the inspiration and information that will feed your
soul, and then pass along your copy of Natures Pathways to another who could
benefit from the expert advice and more found within the following pages. Its
time to rekindle your passion!

Who and
what are the
Rosicrucians?

he Rosicrucian Order, AMORC is a worldwide community

of seekers who study and practice the metaphysical laws
governing the universe. Much of the teachings of the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC goes back to the mystery schools of ancient
Egypt and Europe. Yet it is not frozen. It has moved and is still moving
with the times. It is not the thoughts of a single teacher or group but
the development of some of the greatest mystical minds through the
ages. It is not a religion or dogma or even a single philosophy.
Through the Rosicrucian teachings, students gain specific
knowledge of metaphysics, mysticism, philosophy, psychology,
parapsychology and science not taught by conventional educational systems or traditional religions.
From childhood we begin hiding our inner self away. We learn
to adapt and survive in the outside world. Our families and peers
teach us socially acceptable behavior. Our educational system
teaches us the technical and social skills we need to sustain a
material life. As adults we are thrust into a society geared toward
materialism and maintaining the status quo.
Rarely, especially in the early formative years, are we taught
inner development with an emphasis on intuition, the subconscious mind, independent thinking, self-esteem, self-confidence,
psychic or inner spiritual growth. Yet despite all this, the inner
self does remain alive in everyone and many are ready to heed its
call. That is why the Rosicrucian Order is in existence today and
has been for centuries, offering people a way to realize their own
infinitely powerful and divine nature.
Rosicrucian students walk along the path of the mystic. Mysticism can be defined as an experience where one personally knows,
through direct knowledge, the source of all being. Many call this
source God; others, the divine or the Cosmic. It is a path traveled
by a relative few at any one time. Yet, it is the path that has given
us many of our greatest minds, enriching the world with their
inventions, scientific discoveries, beautiful works of art, music
and books, but most importantly, their personal approach to life.
And it is the path all persons must travel in their own time if they
are to reach their ultimate personal evolution.

Natures Pathways | March 2015

With the Rosicrucian system of study, each month, students

receive online access to weekly lessons, called monographs, to
read in the privacy of their own home. The lessons, about six to
eight pages each, introduce certain ideas and experiments in a
straightforward and simple manner.
Students are asked to devote one and a half hours a week to
study and perform any exercise and experiment given. For the
rest of the week, the Rosicrucian Order recommends thinking
about the important concepts presented and also practicing the
exercises given. This is because the lessons are not just a body
of knowledge, but a way of life. If you only read them and dont
attempt the experiments or practice the techniques, then youre
only learning theory, just as if you only read a book on how to play
the piano, and yet never practiced playing one.
It takes dedication to begin ones quest for the knowledge of the
universe. It is essential that you test the ideas and experiments,
prove their validity to yourself, and then incorporate them into
your life. As you do this, mere theories will be replaced by real
knowledge, solid skills, increased confidence, peace of mind and
an ability to create the life you want.

manager for Wisconsin.

Who am
I without
her/him?

By Robert Matuszak

our loved one has passed. It has been several months, or

maybe a few days, since the event. Then you ask yourself:
Who am I now?
Grief can range from unsettling to tumultuous to devastating. It can be a deep abyss, or just below the surface aggravating emotional responses. We men know that grief can set us back
enormously.
The wound is painful to the touch; sometimes it feels like
someone is turning a knife in the wound. Riveting, gut wrenching,
a hurt of unfathomable depth. It seems never ending in its ferocity.
Like a paper cut on your fingertip, it sliced the nerves so precisely
that you can feel its sharp pain with the slightest movement.
Grief also signals a time of adjustment. Your loved one is gone.
The pain lessens yet lingers under the surface but doesnt really
go away. When will it? The pain leaves when you take action to
heal it. Its time to accept the loss so you can begin the discovery
of your true self.

My struggle

When I lost my wife Carolyn to breast cancer, I felt like someone

stabbed me in the heart, ripped it out of my chest and crushed it. How
will I survive? How will I continue without her? I hadnt ever experienced pain like this in my 38 years of life. The wound was so deep
that there was a hole where my heart had been. It felt like my heart
would never heal. Yet I knew that I had to continue, unsure as to how.
Probably the biggest hurt from the wound was living without
her. Being a prominent fixture in my life for over 16 years, now she
is gone. I could feel the emptiness in my home. Her energy and
vitality were notably absent in those early months of my recovery.
Coming home from work was like walking into an empty room.
I had to turn on music or the TV to break the deafening silence.
Though my two stepsons were present, it was not the same. My
wound was exacerbated by her absence. It yearned to be closed. It
demanded healing. I just didnt have the grief tools to do it. So the
early months were a journey to find something that could pass for
her energy. As I moved from the cold, desolate, lonesome winter,
www.naturespathways.com

I was able to transition into spring. Perhaps it was the warm

weather, the increased daylight and the hope that spring brings
that enabled me to move slowly forward.

A healing journey begins

Several months later, it was time for me to find out who I was. I
identified so closely with Carolyn that I lost myself. I looked into
the mirror and I saw someone familiar. I asked, Who are you
really? Do you know your qualities, values, likes and dislikes?
Where are you going now with your life? Are you strong enough
to walk this journey without her? These and other questions
permeated my personal inquiry.
It seemed like I just meandered down lifes path searching for
the real me. Identifying with another person so closely caused me
to forget who I was, my needs, desires, goals and what I was to
do in this life. I became codependent with her, deferring my lifes
priorities to hers. This was dysfunctional thinking at its worst.
I struggled through that first year. I attempted to understand this
thing called grief but my resources were limited. I trusted my intuition
more as I found that my rational, logical thinking was insufficient. On
the eve of the first anniversary of my wifes death, I journaled about
her last 24 hours of life. Tears rolled down my face at times recalling the painful events. In the end, though, a release occurred. The
next day which I dreaded, was surprisingly pain free. There began my
journey to self-awareness that still continues to this day.
Next month we will look at the tools used that brought the new
me into being.

Rediscovering the
natural beauty of
wood with sustainable,
nontoxic, zero-VOC
natural waxed finishes
.....................................................
By Jonas A. Zahn

This is one of a four-part series on natural,

nontoxic, eco-friendly wood finishes. Look
for the next installment in next months
issue, at www.naturespathways.com or
http://northwoodscasket.com/blog.

n the process of building a sustainable and eco-friendly casket company,

weve had to learn a lot about ecofriendly wood finishes. Weve learned how
to achieve a wide variety of beautiful wood
finishes without using harmful chemicals.
Most of our learning has been a matter
of rediscovering the historic techniques
mastered by 16th century English craftsmen. In this article well briefly cover the
history, chemistry and useful techniques
for achieving natural waxed finishes.
Waxes have been used for centuries to
seal and protect wood surfaces. Waxes
are effective sealers and provide durable
and protective coating. Conventional
manufacturing has shifted to varnishes
and polyurethane finishes that can be
applied with spray techniques, whereas
12

You can buff waxed wood surfaces

with a soft lint-free cotton cloth, a

an old polyester T-shirt or slacks.
wax finishes require some elbow grease
and patience to get comfortable with the
technique. In general, waxes must first be
applied in a circular motion with an applicator pad, cloth, brush or sponge. Within
a minute or two, wipe the wax in the same
direction as the wood grain. And finally,
buff the wax to a shine once the wax has
begun to cure or dry.
Buffing a wax finish takes some getting
used to. You can buff waxed wood surfaces
with a soft lint-free cotton cloth, a polyester
auto-buffing cloth or even an old polyester
T-shirt or slacks. I prefer polyester because
it is mildly abrasive and not absorbent. The
trick is in the timing and pressure. Buff too
soon and you will smear the wax around.

Wait too long and the wax will be too hard

to buff to a nice shine. Buff lightly with the
same pressure youd pet your cat or dog.
Let the rag do the work. The more expert
you get at applying the wax, the longer you
will be comfortable waiting to buff some
experts wait hours to buff after application.
Multiple coats can be applied to build up a
thick protective finish.
My favorite wax is clear carnauba wax.
Carnauba wax is made by pressing the
leaves of a palm tree. This wax is what is
used to make M&Ms chocolate candy
shells, lipstick and automotive polish. It is
available in bars, flakes and paste. The bars
and flakes are either pure or blended with
beeswax. The paste form maintains the
www.naturespathways.com

wax in suspension in a solvent typically

turpentine. In paste form, carnauba wax is
classified as either a low-volatile organic
compound (VOC) or VOC product. Once
applied and the solvent has evaporated, the
finished wood is 100 percent free of VOCs
(important for making childrens toys or
furniture). You can make your own wax
paste with carnauba wax flakes and orange
oil solvent or lemon juice.
There is a newly patented wax product
produced exclusively by the Real Milk
Paint Company. This wax is a proprietary
blend of walnut oil, carnauba wax and
beeswax. They offer two colors: Warm
Black and Chestnut Brown. These ingredients polymerize with exposure to the air
to form a tight-sealing, almost plastic-like
surface. Water will bead up on this surface
and it is 100 percent VOC free perfect
for table surfaces. Apply with a cotton
cloth in ultra-thin coats and let dry 24
hours. Then buff lightly with steel wool for
a very smooth, shiny surface. Apply multiple coats to your liking.
All of these topcoat finishes can be
layered for added protection, but not in
any order. Finishes that require a porous
surface must be applied first before others
that seal the surface. For example, we often
use milk paint, then tung oil, then wax.
Wax can be layered on wax, but once the
surface is waxed you cannot not apply
more paint or oil, as the surface is sealed
and there no longer is a porous texture for
milk paint or natural oil to penetrate and
bond to.

What is an
astrology
sign?

By Lisa Anne

WHATS YOUR SIGN? Its a clich nowadays, yet one that

everyone knows. Im a Taurus. Im a Virgo. Im a Pisces.
But what does that even mean? How does each sign find its own
meaning, symbolism and context?
Simply put, it is based on two things: elements and modalities. Well start with the elements: fire, earth, air and water. Fire is
outgoing, impulsive, active and warm. Earth is grounded, practical, secure and tangible. Air is thinking, talking, writing, learning.
Water is emotion, intuition, depth. As you can see, each element
is both metaphorical and literal.
The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The earth signs
are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. The air signs are Gemini, Libra
and Aquarius. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. So
Aries being a fire sign is embedded with an energy of warmth
and excitement, and Taurus being an earth sign is grounded and
needs security.
Knowing the element is the first step. But what differentiates
each sign from the other? Wouldnt all fire signs be the same? No,
because now we introduce the modality.

The root word of modality is mode. What mode is the

element operating from? There are three variations: cardinal,
fixed and mutable.
Cardinal energy is dramatic, strong and deliberate. Related to the
cardinal points on the compass, it is direction. The four cardinal
signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. These four signs mark
the four seasons for they are imbued with the force of nature.
Fixed energy is persistent, solid, heavy and secure. Think of
something in a fixed position it doesnt move, it is in one spot,
and has to be pushed by outside forces to get movement. The four
fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. So these signs
carry a fixed energy to their individual element.
Mutable energy is adaptive and moveable. Think of the word
mutate. This energy has the ability to shape itself to its surroundings and change according to its environment. The mutable signs
are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.
As you may notice, there is no sign that is in the same element
and mode. Aries is still a fire sign but is the only fire sign with
cardinal energy. Taurus is still an earth sign, but is the only fixed
earth sign. Gemini is still an air sign, but the only air sign with
mutable energy. Cancer is the only cardinal water sign, and so on.
And this is all based on and related to the seasons.
APRIL is the month of Aries: cardinal fire, leadership and

strength. This month marks the beginning of spring.

MAY is the month of Taurus: fixed earth, solid and grounded.

This month marks the new involvement with growth and the
outdoors. It is the month of planting, gardening and preparing
for the future.

JUNE is the month of Gemini: mutable air, busyness and versa-

tility. This month marks the end of school, vacation, adapting to

new hours in the day and filling them with lots of activity.

A balancing act
Chiropractic care to
improve proprioception

By Amber Erickson, DC, MEEBW

an you close your eyes and touch your nose? Can you
stand on one foot? Balance is very important, but it is
something that we often take for granted.
Proprioception is knowing where your body joints are in space,
without looking. This is the ability to maintain an upright posture
without leaning. Your body depends on proprioception for everything that you do, from work to play. This is the reason that you know
where your foot is when you step without actually watching it step.
Joint receptors in the foot, leg and back will send input in the motion
back up into the brain to be processed. Both can be improved and
strengthened, with purposeful exercises and with chiropractic care.
The proprioceptive system is composed of nerves that are found
in joints and in the muscles and ligaments that surround all joints.
The function of these nerves is to maintain tone and to sense
when stretch is applied to the joint capsule. They then transmit
this information up to the brain where it is then processed, so that
the body can then be instructed on how to respond. The brain will
then send nerve signals down to the appropriate muscles to either
contract or relax the relevant muscles and to produce the dictated
movement. This happens at a very rapid speed, without conscious
thought on our part. This is in part how a reflex works, often the
motion is completed before we are even aware that we are moving.
Good balance is a direct result of a properly functioning proprioceptive system, and a joint injury or restriction can lessen the effectiveness of the entire system. This may be from an acute injury, or
from chronic stress and a repetitive injury. As we age, our balance
tends to deteriorate. This can lead to an easier chance of injury, and
can make us more prone to re-injury of healed locations.
It is possible to increase the proprioceptive feedback from your
body to your brain, and this can help an athlete to recover more
quickly. It is also possible to improve posture, and to increase
our balance so our day-to-day activities cause less discomfort as
we age. The proprioceptive system can be trained and strengthened, both through specific exercises and with chiropractic care.

www.naturespathways.com

Chiropractors use neurologic testing to monitor and test the

proprioceptive system, and then to improve on any deficits noted.
There are many exercises designed to improve balance and
proprioception. All balance exercises should take place on a flat,
even surface. Begin by standing on one leg, and holding your foot
at the level of your ankle. Hold this up for 5 to 6 seconds, and then
repeat 10 to 12 times. Once you feel stable doing this exercise,
proceed to doing calf raises and mini squats, as well as leg abduction (taking the leg away from the midline) and leg adduction.
Lunges are also a great way to strengthen the lower body. Following this with use of a wobble board can then be very beneficial, but
requires core strength and practice.
All of these exercises can then be performed on the wobble board,
as long as stability and balance can be maintained. More advanced
exercises include running a figure-8 pattern, and walking while
crossing over your feet. Regular chiropractic care can also significantly help to improve both balance and proprioception to restoring joint motion and improving muscle tone. Kinesiology taping
can also be a great way to increase proprioception.

Spring fashion
for
your pet?

By Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA

ets wearing clothes: Is it just all good fun? As a holistic

veterinarian, I have witnessed and participated in the
application of a variety of apparel to pets for therapeutic
and whimsical reasons. Why do some people do this to their fourlegged companions and how do these pets feel about that?
Our daily choice of attire certainly seems to have an impact on
our mood. It seems to reason that a tight sweater or uncomfortable boots could run your dogs day! After all, dont many vet techs
and pet guardians call the dreaded Elizabethan collar the cone of
shame for a reason? Have you not seen the dejected expression
worn by many a dog while it wears that confining neck piece? I
remember many years ago when my handsome Golden Retriever
was forced to wear an E-Collar for one month to prevent him
from licking his leg after radiation treatment. I prepared him in
advance by telling him how special he was and how this party
hat would make him the envy of the neighborhood. Marty

trusted my opinion and wore the apparatus with pride! He never

resisted placement and pranced around confident that his new
adornment would set a new trend.
One of my many favorite patients, Lexi, wears a new outfit
every time she visits! As it turns out, this is prescription therapy
in addition to high fashion. Lexi is allergic to her mom! Allergy
testing has demonstrated that Lexi is allergic to human dander.
It is beneficial to Lexi, for medical reasons, that human family
and friends do not touch her skin. With clothes on, they can hug
Lexi through her lacey tutu or her flannel jammies to their hearts
content.

can be all the rage! My grandson, Dakota, recently moved to

Arizona. My daughter bought darling, expensive sneakers for his
paws to protect him from the hot asphalt. Now he can continue
the walks he so enjoyed when he lived up north! Similarly, many
guardians of northern pets know booties are necessary foot
protection to prevent salt irritation or lacerated pads during
hunting.
Have you ever met a groomer who didnt put bows on your
pet? Certainly bows on my boys bothered me, but my new little
girl poodle seems to love her Hello Kitty barrettes! Pets can
generally manage to remove things if they dont like them; an
ugly bandage is a great example. So, if they leave on stylish shirts,
pants and head gear does that mean they like them?
Animal Connections, Inc. founder and local animal communicator Carolee Biddle explains, Smaller dogs enjoy clothing
more than medium or large-size pups. Some larger dogs say they
love the attention they get when wearing clothes! Chihuahuas
really appreciate a warm winter jacket. Some dogs have said get
this darn thing off of me and dont leave that coat anywhere that
I can get at it! One dog was specific; he wanted the blue coat
with the blue collar. Another pet was always the runner up in
the Valentines Day costume contest; he was joyful and proud the
year he finally won!
Peter B. Gray, Ph.D., an associate professor of anthropology at
the University of Nevada, has said, Young, childless couples or
older empty nesters may be the most emotionally invested in a
pet dog. Without a child around to tend to, what some call a fur
baby can help fill that social gap. These are the types of individuals who, according to the American Pet Products Association,
have spent over $50 billion annually in the U.S. on pet products.
Americans spent about $375 million on pet Halloween costumes
in 2012. The attitude that pets are children or family members
and this financial trend in the pet industry will likely lead to
more pets in clothes!
If you are in the category of fashion lover and pet lover, there
is an upcoming event just for you! Fashionistas for Fur-babies
will put models and pets in need on the runway together! See
your favorite costume categories from glitz and glam to sports
and service. Pets and people will strut their stuff to benefit dogs
and cats! Just as professional humans need to wear uniforms,
service dogs need to wear special vests to protect themselves or
to let others know what they are doing. A police dog wears a
bulletproof vest, while a guide dog wears a vest with handles for
the blind. We will honor these professionals on the runway as
well! Sports celebrities will sign autographs too!

Kangaroo care
Skin-to-skin contact
between mother and baby

By Kamala McCormick

angaroo care is the practice, immediately after birth, of

holding your baby, skin to skin, between your breasts.
The father may also participate by holding the baby on his
chest, skin to skin.

How did kangaroo care originate?

Kangaroo care began by accident out of necessity in 1979 in

Bogot, Columbia due to a shortage of isolettes and staff. Doctors
hoped that immediate skin to skin contact between mother and
baby would provide the warmth and stimulation needed for these
newborns to survive. The results were so positive and encouraging that the kangaroo method was introduced into many hospitals in Western Europe during the 1980s. The practice of kangaroo
care came to the United States around 1990.

The practice of kangaroo care

Immediately following the birth, the baby is brought to the mothers chest and placed there with skin-to-skin contact. The baby is

assessed without being removed or separated from its mother.

The baby can be dried to the degree the mother desires. Together
they are covered with a blanket. As long as the baby is stable, any
further testing, assessments or procedures, including the babys
first bath, will take place once the mother and baby have spent this
monumental time together.
Kangaroo care is recommended for at least one hour. During
this time, most babies will, with little help, find their mothers
breast and begin feeding. In the weeks and months to follow, this
practice of skin-to-skin contact is encouraged as much as possible. It helps to build trust and to strengthen the emotional bond
between parents and baby. Fathers are also encouraged to enjoy
the benefits.

Why is kangaroo care important?

Continued research indicates there are several benefits for the

baby if skin-to-skin contact begins as soon as the baby is born.
The transition from uterine life to the world is more gentle and
soothing for the baby. Babies who have been placed skin to skin
with their mothers cry less, are more alert and establish breastfeeding better. Skin-to-skin contact gives the baby an analgesic
effect that may decrease discomfort experienced during the birth
process. The release of oxytocin creates a feeling of connection.
Research has shown that mothers and babies are in thermal
harmony during kangaroo care. The babys body temperature will
regulate in response to the warmth from the mother. This adjustment keeps the babys temperature appropriately stable.
During kangaroo care you will be able to feel your babys
www.naturespathways.com

movements and your baby will be able to hear your heartbeat, a

familiar sound, and benefit from your touch. This touch encourages bonding between mothers and babies.
Research has shown that kangaroo care is not only safe, but
it actually enhances babies overall growth and development.
Mothers feel more confident and relaxed about taking care of
their babies. Breastfeeding mothers usually notice an increase in
milk production. Infants become instinctually familiar with the
mothers breast which promotes successful breastfeeding and
healthy growth and weight gain.
Practicing kangaroo care will provide you and your baby the
instinctual connection of touch and benefits that will last forever.

the pelvis and ribcage. This quick yet effective move is great to
incorporate into an already-existing yoga practice or as an added
bonus to an already great workout.

To begin

1. Start in a standing position (neutral). Take a large step back

with your left foot. Balancing on the ball of your back foot,
relax slightly into the back heel, keeping your ankle neutral.
2. Now square your hips forward and work to keep your pelvic
floor and deep core active and the leader of the movement.
3. With the ring between the palms (keep fingers open and
pointing forward not to grip) and the arms extended long in
front of you, inhale at center, working to expand the ribcage
wide, and exhale, pressing in on the ring as you twist toward
your right side. While twisting, be mindful not to hunch
forward and watch not to overemphasize pressing in on the
ring. You should feel contraction on your right side. Inhale
while twisted and with a strong core contraction, exhale.
Return back to center, keeping modest pressure on the right,
extending it back out in front of you.
4. Repeat this series five to ten times on each side; it is not uncommon to be weaker on one side of the body, as we typically move
in daily living in a very asymmetrical way. In order to create more
body balance, work to repeat the weaker side a second time.
Repeating this move three to five times a week will leave you
feeling tall, strong and empowered with core strength!

Building a
relationship
with healers
and
health care

By Michael Richards

ecent movements in health care reform are providing means

for exploring lasting solutions for the underinsured. While
our elected officials seem to be latching onto removing the
Affordable Care Act outright; at the very least, we Americans have
begun discussing its immediate effects amongst ourselves. And by
no means is the health of our families a matter to be decided by a
select few, but one now thankfully being played out in real time.
I was not insured before the start of 2014 and I know countless millennials with similar stories. For a while, my health was
solely based on genetic fate and my growing determination to
consciously live well. I was simply living day by day and putting
potential burden on my future self.
Now that there is an affordable option, we are learning to take
measures into our own hands. There are now more Americans
becoming acquainted with the art of living, and thats bound to be
a boon to all of us.
Thats going to mean less hospitalization, and more time for
our work and families. Less intervention, and more prevention
methods. To think, millions will have benefited just by becoming
more comfortable with the doctors and nurses in their communities. We should all find relief in knowing that our fellow citizens
will be that much more educated. The open discussion is shedding
light on whats to be seen as truly valuable, and to what has been
available to the public for generations empathy.
Empathy (and taxes) keep updated libraries for the public and
bring sustenance to the impoverished. Empathy provides a means
for transportation and smoother pathways to higher education.
There have always been those striving for equal opportunity
long before the reform, long before governments ever intervened in issues such as these. Wisconsin only enacted BadgerCare
in 1999, but the fact is we have had a growing amount of health
care availability for our citizens in the past two decades. Well
before that, charity care programs and subsidies were far-reaching
throughout our state. Many brought on by the duties of religion,
but at the heart of all compassion is our inherent duty to give to one

www.naturespathways.com

another. That is why there continues to be people bothering with

the health care profession despite its complex nature: the memorization of the human body, the years of dedication to oceans of
literature, and now a demand for comprehending medical laws
that only seem to lengthen the patient-practitioner divide.
But without much investment, we can align ourselves with the
planets equilibrium by developing a long-lasting relationship with
dedicated healers. Many colleges throughout the state introduce
their students to patients from the start. And because theyre offering
services through expertise that is being freshly molded, it is often at a
rate reasonable enough to start making them into habits. I urge you
to look into the increasingly tangible ways to getting yourself in synch
with harmony. Dont wait until youre feeling off to meet with a health
care professional; there really isnt much time to waste.
Together we can achieve longevity for today and all the days
we have to come.

From the outside in

Be Green Lawn Cares healthy lawns create healthy homes

BY GRACE OLSON
Not much can beat the first backyard cookout or family gathering
outside in spring. The weather offers us an escape that is refreshing,
invigorating and, in Wisconsin, feels well deserved after a tough winter.
Its a clear highpoint in the season, and theres an easy way to make it
even better: earth-friendly lawn care.
It has more of an impact on your health than you may realize, and
Be Green Lawn Care, LLC is the perfect business to help you grasp
just how much. Owner Patti Beres says its important to think about the
products you use in your yard for a very logical reason: what goes on
outside of your home eventually makes its way inside.
Your lawn surrounds your most valuable asset, which is your family,
she says. We focus on healthy maintenance and growing things strong,
which inevitably has an effect on more than just your home. Lawn care can
have a big effect on the environment in a positive way if its done right.
A SAFER, CUSTOMIZABLE LAWN PROGRAM
Be Green is doing it right. They use products and techniques that are
more earth-friendly to make sure theyre a part of that positive effect.
They use fertilizers that stay put. It seems simple, but it makes a difference when the majority of other products are considered. A lot of nitrogen-based products will do their job and give plants the burst of energy
they need, but subsequently run off or become airborne. They arent
long-term nutrients for the grass.
Our products are different in that theyre designed so theyll stay
there and only break down when the grass actually needs it, Patti
explains. So rather than being used up in a week or two they stay on
the lawn and give it nutrients for usually six to eight weeks.
Be Green also pays close attention to what their products are made
of, and how they affect their surroundings. State law mandates that all
lawn care companies post any time there are chemical substances on a
lawn. Weve all noticed the white flags in the summer, but theyre far from
all the same. Their warnings vary anywhere from Caution, the least toxic,
and what Be Green primarily uses, to Hazardous or Dangerous.
Not all chemicals are created equal, Patti says. A lot of times you
see a lawn care company in the neighborhood, and youll smell a very
telltale sign of certain chemicals that have been applied. That doesnt
happen with us.
Research is a large part of being earth-friendly, and Be Green is
constantly updating their knowledge of the effect pesticides, herbicides
and chemicals have on both the earth and your home. They also take it
a step further and look out for those you might not expect.

We use things that are going to be safest for other environmental

factors, Patti says. Microbes, earthworms, wildlife, bees we try to use
things that have the least effect on any of those other things we share
the earth with.
LAWN CARE FOR ALL SEASONS
They do so with an integrated system spanning all four seasons.
Because they visit a lawn at least four times a year, they are able to
see what might be attracted to a certain area, and whats going wrong
or right immediately, allowing them to treat a small portion of the lawn
instead of waiting and having the problem grow bigger.
We customize every lawn care program according to what clients
want. We have some customers who want nothing but organic matter
or composted matter, Patti explains. And a lawn with a lot of sun and
not many trees will be treated differently than a wooded or completely
shaded area.

Spring is the season most associated with grass, and thus is typically first thought about when people consider lawn care. The ground
is thawing, the sun is shining, and plants and flowers are beginning
to blossom. Its a great time to begin, but it is far from being the only
time to give your yard or garden attention. Be Green knows better and
understands the road to a healthy lawn involves all four seasons.
The first lawn care application typically happens between Easter
and Mothers Day. The weather can vary from year to year, though, and
Be Green takes pride in their ability to make decisions benefiting lawns
based on more factors than simply the lawns condition.
We really look at weather patterns and how to customize our
programs, Patti says. Judging by that, we look for products that will
really sustain the lawn.
Subsequent visits occur in late spring and early to mid-summer before
the weather gets very hot, a very tough time for lawns but not pests.
Be Green offers an all-natural product that deters mosquitos and
other undesirable insects. It may sound too good to be true, but it has
the science to back it up. The product has a cedar oil base, allowing it
to remain strong and relevant for longer than its water-soluble counterparts not suitable for Wisconsin.
One of our clients said she had the mosquito program, but she really
had never noticed if it had been working or not. Then she went to a Fourth
of July party at her neighbors house a few houses down the block and
noticed how bad the mosquitos everywhere else were, Patti says. She
actually asked her neighbor if she wanted to bring the party to her house!
Be Greens fall winterization treatment begins anywhere from
Halloween to Thanksgiving.
We usually visit much later in the spring than other lawn care
companies, but thats because weve done our job in the fall, Patti
explains. We like to think of it like hibernating animals needing to
gather nutrients and have enough to sustain them over the winter.
Thats what we do for the lawn.
Sustainability is a huge factor, and Patti reminds that continuing
care once your lawn is healthy is an important component, likening it to our bodys immune system. When youre taking care of
yourself eating well, exercising, sleeping right your immune
system is stronger and can fight anything bad that comes its
way. The same goes for lawn care and Be Greens mission.
Were an earth-friendly company trying to protect the
whole environment around us people, pets, lawns and our
surroundings.

GOING BEYOND GREEN TO HEALTHY

Be Green Lawn Care was proud to
participate in the Metropolitan
Builders Associations Home
Building and Remodeling
Show Jan. 9-11 this year. It
was a chance for likeminded
earth-friendly businesses
to pool their resources and
celebrate just how much green
building has taken strides over
the last few years.
Its such a great supporter of businesses like us, Patti
says. The event showcased a small home built specifically
for the show, presenting a number of different ways paint,
carpeting and, of course, lawn care can be made more
environmentally safe. I feel so honored and supported by
the organization.

Pisces
Home at last!
Dates: Feb. 22 March 21
Ruled by: Neptune
Element: Water

By Barry Kerr

New Moon chart, March 20, 4:36 p.m.

hough true for everyone, the following information will feel

more relevant to you if your sun, north node, Chiron and/
or a group of other planets are in Pisces on your birth chart.

What is Pisces intention?

In our journey toward an ever-expanding sense of self, Pisces brings

us to knowing a oneness with all that is. To the extent we believe God
to be outside ourself, Pisces will haunt us until we discover, experientially, that we are part and parcel of God. Pisces, home at last!
Our inner Neptune always feels oneness, but because our ego
has been unaware of any direct experience of our divine connection, we have struggled through various substitutes, from religious martyrdom to drug addiction. Pisces spiritual intention is

to give us conscious access to our divine wholeness in infinite,

eternal and unconditional love.
We learn to be nonjudgmental and compassionate. We free our
minds with meditation and self-reflection. We let go of any need
to fix the world, and surrender our anxiety to a higher power and
a divine plan. Our ego learns to relax totally, sometimes seeming
nonexistent. We feel at peace, not by denying worldly reality, but
by incorporating divine reality.
Our unconscious inner Pisces, feeling the longing, but not
knowing how to create authentic connection to our divine wholeness, can feel vague, disorientated and a victim to life. Our deep
feeling Neptune, always connected to others, can be oversensitive to others pain, creating emotional confusion and self-doubt.
This can lead to escape through alcohol, fantasies or even mental
illness. Or we might try to force a spiritual connection, a seeming
death to our ego, through religious cults, martyrdom or drugs.
Sometimes we can invoke divine awareness through music or
other artistic experiences.

What needs healing and growth?

Our Pisces ego, blind to the illusions of its limited senses, can
suffer greatly from a lack of faith or trust in God. The world can
seem entirely unfair and merciless. One can shut oneself to the
divine and create a hard shell of cynical pragmatism, afraid of
opening to others, yet painfully desiring connection. And we can
feel overly sensitive to others, like an open sore, lacking boundaries. The pain can crush us, drive us to escapism or to creative and
artistic expression, and eventually to our inner spiritual resources.
www.naturespathways.com

Saturns continuing
square with Neptune
invites us to balance our
attachment to reality
with our compassionate
longing for a better world.
After lifetimes of blame, rescuing others, denying self, escaping
and recovering from various addictions, we eventually begin to
experience a larger order to life. There is justice within the unjust,
fairness in the unfair, blessings in every turn of events. Love is
ever present and supporting us in everything we experience. We
open our spiritual heart to receiving and giving that love, thus
grounding our soul in full presence in this physical dimension.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Pisces self, give attention to your spiritual
awareness. Do you blame outside yourself? Do you feel alienated
from God? Do you get confused around other peoples feelings? Can
you feel compassion without needing to rescue? Do you trust the flow
of life? Can you feel your divine connection to others, beyond just a
concept? Do you meditate and spend time alone in self-reflection?
Do you trust that this seemingly unfair and cruel world is actually
perfect for all souls in it? Does that last question tend to annoy you?

Additional support (current planetary transits)

On March 16, Uranus and Pluto square up (90 degrees) for the
final of seven squares over two years. This is a major event for
all humanity, relating to social and economic unrest as the forces
for individual rights and freedom have been battling with the
forces of powerful corporations, governments and religions. As
individuals, our challenge is and will be to stand up for ourselves
in the face of overwhelming powers, and trust in a greater truth,
larger vision, and a loving universe to support transformative and
positive change. Saturns continuing square with Neptune invites
us to balance our attachment to reality with our compassionate
longing for a better world.
The new moon on March 20 sitting right on the cusp of Pisces/
Aries, with Mercury conjoining Neptune in Pisces, invites our
intentions to bring a new, divine awareness to our actions across
the planet. Jupiter trines Uranus at the same time, promising
plenty of opportunity for intuitive action toward change as active
and willful Mars approaches the two.

Positive thinking
with a simple
NLP
anchor

By Lucas J. Robak

euro-linguistic programming, more commonly known

as NLP, is the language of the mind to successfully
achieve your specific and desired outcomes. There is
a connection with our neurological processing, neuro, our
language, linguistics and our learned behavior from past experiences, programming.
There is an abundance of NLP techniques that you can use to
effectively catapult your life to new levels of success. Each proven
technique alters your perception to a successful mindset in which
you are empowered to choose.
The majority of NLP techniques call for a professional, a certified NLP practitioner, in order for the process to be successful.
The great news for you is that there are a few skills which you can
teach yourself in order to use NLP on your own. A NLP anchor
is the easiest and simplest life-changing technique that can be
implemented immediately by anyone.
Think of a NLP anchor like the anchors you use on a boat. When
you are fishing and find a spot that will achieve your desired outcome,
you drop the anchor in order to keep the boat in the same place.
Remember the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov? Pavlovs dogs

were conditioned to salivate every time they heard a bell. The

bell is the stimuli (anchor) and the salvation is the conditioned
response you empower yourself to create.
Throughout life there are a multitude of automatic unconscious
anchors that are created for us without ever actually knowing
it. There may be a specific smell that sends your thoughts and
emotions back to your childhood when you were at your grandparents house. A particular sound that a military veteran hears
can trigger a flashback. A particular touch from someone can
elicit a response of love and compassion. We all have these, and
there is nothing we can do to prevent them from forming. We can,
however, have the power create our own anchors and consciously
create them on unknowing participants.
No matter what negative people or circumstances surround
you, through the use of anchors, you are able to change your state
of mind, perspective and emotions within a split second literally. They can be used to change your state of mind from work to
home, home to work and everything in between.
After you master this simple anchor, research and implement
stacked anchors, chained anchors and collapsing anchors.
Only after you put in the work, you will then be responsible for
consciously remembering to implement the anchor at the appropriate times. By dropping the anchor with bad timing, it is susceptible to extinction.
1. PICK A STIMULUS

The anchor that you choose should be a movement that you

normally do not do, if ever. For instance, many clients choose
tugging on their earlobe, squeezing their index and middle fingers
with their opposite hand three times, holding their arm across
their body while pinching their opposite tricep, etc.
2. PICK AN EMPOWERING STATE

Here you decide what your conditioned response will be. With
Pavlovs dogs, their state was hunger, which created the salvation.
26

Natures Pathways | March 2015

www.naturespathways.com

Clients most common chosen states are positivity, relaxation,

energy, confidence, extroversion, focus, etc.
3. RELIVE THE MEMORY

Find a memory where you actually lived that empowering state

at some point in your life. Your memory needs to be in your past,
fully associated, and vivid. Recall that memory where you experienced your desired state, see it happening through your own eyes,
and remember all the details in it. Really live that memory!
4. LINK THE STIMULUS WITH THE STATE

Through remembering, you will naturally elicit the state of mind that
you want anchored. Once you are in this state, link the anchor to the
state. Caution: do not drop the anchor too soon or too long. Only
drop the anchor while you are peaking at your desired state. Drop it
as many times as possible; the more you do this, the stronger it will be.
5. TEST

To test your anchor, you first need to break state. Do some math
problems or think of something that takes concentration. Once
your state has changed, drop the anchor to make sure you did it
correctly. If you do not experience your new state, go back to Step
4 until you build your anchor.

Tax time cometh

once again
Exploring your retirement options:
Roth versus traditional IRAs

By Lars M. Lewander

o you have an individual retirement account, or IRA?

This is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways
to save toward retirement. The two main types of IRAs
are traditional and Roth. You might also be familiar with the term
rollover IRA, which is a traditional IRA used for rollovers from
an old workplace plan, such as a 401(k). As with all IRAs, the
Internal Revenue Service mandates specific eligibility and filing
status requirements.
A Roth IRA is a retirement plan under U.S. law that is generally not taxed, provided certain conditions are met. This type of
savings account was established by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997
(Public Law 105-34) and named for its chief legislative sponsor,
Sen. William Roth of Delaware.
Many financial institutions offer IRAs. Each place has its own
strengths and weaknesses. Its important to search for a company
that suits your needs. Dont fret about finding the perfect match
find a good match and then get the IRA in motion. Questions
to ask during your research include:
Is there a minimum initial investment? Minimum
contributions?
What sorts of fees are assessed to the account?
Does the company offer automatic contributions?
What investment options are available? Can you invest in
stocks? Mutual funds? Real estate?
Is it possible to download statements automatically into
Quicken?
How reputable is the provider?
If you already have an investment advisor, ask for recommendations, but look for other options too. Some banks and credit
unions offer IRAs as well. If youre willing to make some decisions
on your own, you can open a self-directed IRA through a mutual
fund company or through an online discount brokerage.
The Roth IRAs principle difference from most other tax-advantaged retirement plans is that rather than granting a tax break for

28

Natures Pathways | March 2015

money placed into the plan, the tax break is given on the money withdrawn from the plan during retirement. This means that contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax-deductible. Withdrawals are generally
tax-free, but not always and not without certain stipulations (i.e., taxfree for principal withdrawals and the owners age must be at least 59
for tax-free withdrawals on the growth portion above principal).
A Roth IRA can be an individual retirement account containing investments in securities, usually common stocks and bonds,
often through mutual funds (although other investments, including derivatives, notes, certificates of deposit and real estate
are possible). A Roth IRA can also be an individual retirement
annuity, which is an annuity contract or an endowment contract
purchased from a life insurance company.
On the next page is a basic chart comparing the two types of
IRAs. While you can set up an IRA yourself, consulting with your
financial advisor or tax accountant is recommended, for there are
a number of qualifiers that may apply to your specific situation.

7 surprising
ways to get and
stay
stuck!

By Carol Michalski, MSW, LCSW

Someday is not a day of the week.

Janet Dailey

o you ever find yourself trying to

take a risk? Wanting to take action,
to make a decision? It happens to
everyone from time to time. Taking steps
beyond your comfort zone creates a good
deal of fear and anxiety. But dont worry!
Here are some suggestions guaranteed to
keep you comfortably stuck right where you
are! Forgive me for having tongue firmly in
cheek, but I think the point gets made!

1. OVERTHINK IT

Think about how to do it, whatever it is,

perfectly. How it better be done correctly.
How it better be good and original. Think
about everyones reaction. Then take a
break and think some more!
2. DO RESEARCH INSTEAD

Its probably important that you know

everything about it, and that you are an
expert before you attempt any action.
Dont even think about taking any action
until your exhaustive research is complete.
3. GET PLENTY OF ADVICE

Ask your spouse, significant other, and the

person standing behind you in the grocery
store checkout line. Ignore the opinion
of Carl Jung, the Swiss psychotherapist
and psychiatrist, who said, a collection
of a hundred great brains creates one big
fat head! Take all the advice you can get.
Dont trust yourself.
4. TAKE EVERYTHING PERSONALLY
www.naturespathways.com

perfection. Dont forget for one moment

how much is at stake if your effort fails.
You could lose face, be embarrassed. Dont
worry too much about these heavy consequences. The resulting paralysis by analysis may disappear in a year or two!

If your idea is criticized, pout, sulk and

retire from the field. Give up.
5. WAIT FOR INSPIRATION AND
MOTIVATION TO STRIKE!

Do the laundry, watch TV, do the dishes.

If inspiration still doesnt come, take a nap.

What have we learned?

Two review articles published in 2011

and 2012 looked at 15 studies that tested
rhodiola on physical and mental performance in 575 people. Both reviews found

Yoga move of
the month: Adho
Mukha Svanasana
or Downward
Facing
Dog Pose

By Andrea Smessaert

invite you to enjoy the benefits of one

of the most popular yoga poses, Adho
Mukha Svanasana or Downward
Facing Dog. Youve probably observed
your dog doing this pose several times a
day. It so happens that our canine friends
have been on to something for some time,
and Downward Facing Dog Pose can
benefit dogs and humans alike.
BKS Iyengar asserts that this asana
stretches the shoulders, legs, spine and
whole body; builds strength throughout
the body, particularly the arms, legs and
feet; relieves fatigue and rejuvenates the
body; improves the immune system, digestion and blood flow to the sinuses, and
calms the mind and lifts the spirits.
The name comes from the Sanskrit
words adhas () meaning down,
mukha () meaning face, vna ()
meaning dog, and sana () meaning
posture or seat.
The preparatory position is with the
hands and knees on the floor, hands
under the shoulders, fingers spread wide,
knees under the hips and typically about
seven inches (17 cm) apart, with the spine
straightened and relaxed.
1. COME ONTO THE FLOOR ON YOUR
HANDS AND KNEES. Set your knees

directly below your hips and your hands

slightly forward of your shoulders. Spread
your palms and index fingers parallel or

slightly turned out, and turn your toes under.

2. EXHALE AND LIFT YOUR KNEES
AWAY FROM THE FLOOR. At first, keep

the knees slightly bent and the heels lifted

away from the floor. Lengthen your tailbone away from the back of your pelvis and
press it lightly toward the pubis. Against
this resistance, lift the sitting bones toward
the ceiling, and from your inner ankles
draw the inner legs up into the groins.

from 1 to 3 minutes. Then bend your knees

How do
we heal
emotionally?

By Rich Hanhardt

his is a difficult question and one

that has been asked all over the
world since the beginning of time.
We all get hurt and we dont like it. So we
seek relief from our suffering and pain in
many diverse places and with many different people. Offering help for our suffering
from emotional wounds is big business and
yet we continue to suffer. And when the
big business approaches fail they have an
out they blame the people seeking help.
lgame! These people are either too sick, have too
many issues, are too resistive to change or
are too something else. All of this has
wn?
the effect of arriving at a system that never
with
has to really look at itself and how these

crucial services are delivered.

But this article is not about how the
system has failed, it is about how some new
approaches can work.
First we must distinguish between
feeling a bit better (or experiencing some
relief) and actually healing. These are very
different events in a persons life. Healing is
opposite from feeling a bit better. It involves
the whole person and a courageous undertaking of moving beyond the present experience, of looking at oneself differently
than ever before. This kind of change also
requires hope. Hope requires a core belief
that the outcome may really be better than
the present experience. However, many of

us have lost hope. But there is a way out; lets

look at how this works.
Emotional wounding is caused by evil.
However, in our culture we do not want to
acknowledge evil. This allows evil to do its
worst to us: to cause suffering and to take
away healing by making us experience
chaos and confusion. When we are in pain
we cannot see what to do next. This is all
that evil has needed to continue its damage:
to not be recognized. It hunts in the dark.
Even worse, we are wounded and so we
cause even further damage to others or
ourselves. We are the damsels in the tower,
watching out the window all day, every day
for our rescuing savior. Deep inside we

know we can only be redeemed by love;

hope calls forth our need for love. This is
what we are watching for out of the tower
window. The knight who rides his steed to
the base of the tower on a rescue mission
had better be a lover.
Those of us who have not found love
and who are still watching out of the tower
window are the brave ones who have not
given up. But some have retreated inside,
never to look again. Or some, tragically, have
jumped out of the window. They are broken.
This is the affliction of evil in the human soul.
Love defeats evil by providing meaning
and order to life. This occurs when chaos is
throttled by love and creativity is released.
Creativity brings order. Order springs
out of chaos. In the beginning, God made
order out of chaos. The paint flows onto the
canvas from the inner life of the painter. The
order is right there paint on canvas: form
and order. And he did it by creating. When
we are in pain, Gods great gift is to allow us
to join him in creativity. He gives us this gift
because he is in love with us. And when we
fall in love with God magic is born. Healing
magic is what we all are looking for.
So we have departed from traditional
approaches to getting better. Love must be a
major ingredient in the formula for healing.
The next question would of course be, How
do we find love? Here are some ways:
Learning to be compassionate through
the Sacred Bond experience
Healing meditation through the Living
Waters or other approaches
Learning to tell a new healing story
through the Story Building process
Dream work to understand what
healing gifts your psyche has for you
Personal symbol study to find the
sources of meaning in your life
Finding the ability to change through
bodywork such as in Focusing
Providers specializing in these and other
compassionate and healing approaches are
available in our community.
Richard Hanhardt, M.S., MBA,
BCSLC, is the executive director of
The Sacred Bond Center. He has practiced in the psychotherapy field for 44
years and now has dedicated his work
to what he believes is truly healing: awakening the
spiritual for clients through multiple pathways. He is
the author of Sacred Bond, Living Waters: Healing
Through Meditative Prayer and Story Building,
Telling the Healing Story of Great Power.

businessPROFILE

HAVE YOU HEARD of the Equilibrex pendent? Its more than

jewelry: It could help you regain control of your life!
Equilibrex is the only scientifically proven energy field regulator in existence today that does not require any manmade external
source of power. It was designed by Vibralife Institute Laboratories with the highest degree of precision to duplicate the geometrical structure of the manifestations of higher energies constituting what is commonly known as life force.
Equilibrex acts as a constant pulse transmitter that generates
a powerful energy field similar to the one created by the forces
responsible for our vital energy. This process neutralizes potentially
harmful molecular vibrations by magnifying stable energy fields.
The key to Equilibrexs success lies in its mathematical blueprint. Its design is a mathematical reproduction of the universal
life force geometrical configuration and its quadra-dimensional
layout acts as a transformer that intensifies ascending energies by
magnifying specific frequencies.

How Equilibrex can benefit your health

Introduce Equilibrex to any living system and the result is a more

powerful, well-balanced and extremely healthy energy field.
We all know the vital importance of a strong energy field. Modern
science is now just recognizing its mere existence. A strong and balanced energy
field leads to a healthy physical
life but more importantly, it
insures that we are mentally
ready to tackle all of our
daily problems and exponentially better our lives.
We have discovered that
when Equilibrex is introduced to a system, its entire
structure rearranges itself at
the molecular level to become
more ordered, closer to the
36

Natures Pathways | March 2015

structure of a purer element. In fact, extensive studies have shown

that contaminated aqueous solutions rapidly transform and show
amazing signs of purification within a very short amount of time.
The free-flowing and quadra-dimensional design makes Equilibrex the scientific device of long-standing spiritual beliefs!
Introduce Equilibrex to your life and start enjoying extraordinary vital energy with all of its benefits and powers. To learn more
about the Equilibrex pendent, visit www.equilibrex.com.

Summer
camp options
abound

ummer camp is a beloved tradition in many families.

Many parents of young children fondly recall spending
their summers at summer camp, where they made lifelong
friends and learned the finer points of roasting marshmallows and
competing in three-legged sack races.
Parents looking for the right summer camp for their kids will
soon discover there are various types of summer camps, each
offering youngsters something different. The following are some
of the summer camp options parents can expect to encounter as
they search for the right camper for their kids.

Day camps

Day camps are not overnight camps, which means kids will return
home each night rather than sleep over at camp. Day camps typically offer many of the activities people have come to associate
with camps, including crafts, sports and even day-trips to experience local culture or attractions. Many day camps are co-ed, and
counselors typically live within the community.

Faith-based camps

Faith-based camps offer many of the same activities as more

traditional summer camps, but do so while simultaneously offering campers the opportunity to celebrate and further explore
their religious beliefs. Some faith-based camps may focus heavily
on religion, incorporating faith into daily camp activities, while
others may be more subtle with regard to integrating religious
beliefs and lessons into camp activities.

Sports camps

Some summer camps focus on a particular sport, catering to young

athletes who want to further develop their athletic talents. Sports
camps may feature guest lectures and lessons from notable local
athletes and coaches, while some camps may provide instruction
from current and/or former professional athletes. Some sports
camps are overnight, while others are day camps.
www.naturespathways.com

Family camps

Family camps are opportunities for the whole family to enjoy the
summer camp experience. Family camps typically tailor their
activities around tasks families can complete together, with counselors providing assistance when its needed. Family camps may be
faith-based or secular, and families typically stay overnight, sleeping in facilities on the campsites or in lodging away from home.

Special needs camps

Parents of children with special needs can still send their kids to
summer camp, as there are many camps that cater to such youngsters. Special needs camps may cater to campers who are blind,
deaf, learning disabled, or mentally or physically disabled. Staff at
special needs camps typically undergoes extensive training, which
helps to calm some of the fears parents may have about leaving their
special needs children at camp. Facilities at special needs camps are
often built to accommodate the specific needs of campers.
