5. Proposed Title : MIRROR SURFACE POLISHING BY USING THE

ELECTROPHORETIC DEPOSITION METHOD.
6. Relevance :
Polishing wheels with homogeneously organized micro abrasive grains, uniformly
dispersed by electrophoretic deposition (EPD), can be applied in mirror-like polishing
process. This work studies the characteristics of EPD and mechanical polishing.
Abrasive grains with blunt edges are easily ablated from the polishing wheel by friction
during polishing. The polishing wheel can be continuously refreshed by adding new
abrasives. A superior surface polishing quality can thus be obtained. The control
parameters of the EPD polishing process include the working voltage, the rate of rotation
of the polishing wheel, the polishing feed rate, the polishing time, the axial loading and
the pH value of the electrolyte, etc. Experimental results indicate not only that SiC
particles of size 0.91.5 mm were used in EPD polishing, but also that the initial
roughness of a machined surface could be improved from 0.5 mm Ra to 0.02 mm in 8
min, yielding a mirror-like surface.

7. Present theory and practice:

Ji Hoon Park, Jong Myung Park :In the present work, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was used to deposit
graphene oxide (GO) onto carbon steel from a GO water suspension. The GO coating was

used as a barrier layer for the corrosion protection of carbon steel. The suspension of GO
was characterized by measuring the zeta potential of the solution using a dispersion
optical analyzer. The morphology of the GO and the surface morphology of the EPD
layers were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman
spectroscopy was performed to determine the effects of EPD on the electrochemical
reduction of GO. GO was successfully synthesized using the modified Hummers method,
and a GO layer was efficiently deposited onto mild steel using EPD.
Shahram Ghasemi, Reza Ojani, Solmaz Ausi:Graphene oxide (GO) was deposited on inexpensive and mechanically stable
stainless steel (SS) electrode by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique. GO was
reduced electrochemically in NaNO3 to obtain electrochemically reduced graphene oxide
(ERGO). Next, Hybrid nickelcobalt hexacyanofarrate (NiCoHCF) nanoparticles were
deposited from solution containing Ni+2 and Co+2 with ratio of 1:1 on ERGO/SS by
bipotential method. Morphological investigation of prepared sample by scanning electron
microscopy showed the presence of nanoparticles with diameters in the range of 15
50 nm. Crystal structure of nanocomposite was investigated by X-ray diffraction
technique
Ji Hoon Park, Jong Myung Park :In this work, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was employed to deposit TiO2
nanoparticles and graphene nanoplatelets composite films onto stainless steel in order to
fabricate a photo-generated cathodic protection layer. The colloidal suspension used for
the EPD was characterized by the measurement of the zeta-potential of the solution using
a dispersion optical analyzer. The surface morphology of the EPD layers was investigated
using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the relative composition of the EPD layer
was estimated from the peak intensities using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) with the
distinct peak at 2 = 26.5. Moreover, the photo-generated cathodic protection abilities
were characterized by measuring the open circuit potential (OCP) and the transient photogenerated current density response from the TiO2-graphene co-deposited samples with
and without exposure to UV light. The TiO2-graphene EPD layer was found to be
uniform, with no noticeable particle homo-aggregation. As a result of the OCP
measurement, it was verified that the EPD layers efficiently provided photo-generated
cathodic protection to the stainless steel because the potential of the photo-stimulated
EPD layers was more negative than the corrosion potential of the stainless steel. When
10 wt.% graphene (vs. TiO2 nanoparticles) was used in the EPD layer.

8.Scope for work :

In the manufacturing of polishing wheels, micro-sized abrasive grains are
easily aggregated, such that the polishing wheels do not have a homogeneously organized
structure with uniformly dispersed abrasive grains. . The improvement in surface
roughness is limited. Moreover, the sharp edges of abrasive grains are blunted by friction
during surface polishing.
There is a scope for modification in a polishing wheel with a homogeneously
organizedstructure can be manufactured by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method the
polishing wheel can be continuously refreshed and improves the surface roughness of the
specimen markedly in a short period.

9.Objectives :
1. Applied in mirror-like polishing process.
2. Study the characteristics of EPD and mechanical polishing.
3. Superior surface polishing quality can be obtained.
4. The initial roughness of a machined surface could be improved from 0.5 mm Ra to 0.02
mm in 8 min

10. Methodology:Figure.1 presents the experimental procedure. The first step is to remove the surface
contaminants from the test specimens by degreasing and cleaning. After cleaning,
measurements of all specimens were made to determine surface roughness. Then, a
parametric study of the EPDpolishing process was performed. The surface roughness (Ra)
was measured after EPD polishing. The following sections describe in detail the experimental
steps.
