INTRODUCTION

Communication is a mutual interaction for exchanging meaning in spite of differences

in participants views and is interaction for conveying ideas, new information, and
feelings. The connection between oral language and literacy and in particular ways in which
communication skill can support literacy development and vice versa were considered. A
distinction was made between oral language as a skill upon which future success in reading
is based, and oral language as a context for learning and practicing reading skills. The
former view highlights the links between oral language and later phonological processing
and reading comprehension. The latter stresses the important role of the teacher in
promoting high levels of cognitive interaction, including fostering childrens engagement in
extended oral language discourse and scaffolding children as they deploy strategies and
engage in perspective-taking and reasoning.

Practicing oral dialogue helped the teacher know the students more and understand
their learning problems that caused obstacles in the way of communication. In this way, the
teacher emphasized on those aspects of language and tried to help them to enhance their
communicative competence by solving those problems in using language individually. In fact,
practicing oral dialogue significantly changed the communicative competence of English
Language Proficiency (ELP) learners but this change for learners with low level of speaking
proficiency was significantly more than that of the students with high level of the speaking
proficiency. If high level proficient students became aware of their weaknesses and found
the chance to solve them through practicing oral dialogue, learners with low level of
speaking proficiency not only found the chance of becoming aware of their errors and of
being corrected indirectly but found the opportunity to start speaking through oral dialogue.

In conclusion, it seems that the privacy and specific feature of oral dialogue that was
valuing individuality of learners gave the learners with low level of the speaking proficiency
enough confidence to start communication free from anxieties they felt in face to face
conversation in the classroom. Oral dialogue could provide an opportunity of interaction
between learners and the teacher which when added to the limited interaction of the
classroom could bring about a great change for all. Practicing oral dialogue can be a

technique for providing the opportunity of speaking for ELP learners when learners have
limited time to speak in classes related to oral skills in genera

Theme : Health
Issue : Importance of exercising for college students
now days
Place of conversation held : Media room of girls hostel
People involved : Two college girls
Inactivity, poor nutrition, and inadequate sleep are common problems among college
students and are leading contributors to a variety of short and long term consequences.
College campuses are an important setting where promotion of healthy lifestyle habits can
occur. Exercising is such a great way to settle down all those health problems in a college
students life. Here goes a conversation between two college students on this exercising
issue for a healthy lifestyle which is very essential for every student.

Junior: Hey Ranjini! Good evening.

Ranjini: Hello sis! Good evening. I was looking for you since today afternoon. Where
have you been and why youre looking so dull dear?
Junior: Oh, I went to a doctor just now.
Ranjini: In what connection?
Junior: I don't feel well these days.
Ranjini: What's the matter sis?
Junior: I have always got a headache. I never feel fresh.
Ranjini: Do you take exercise?
Junior: No. I don't find time. You know right that I am quite busy in my studies and
assignments. Moreover, my finals are also just around the corner. So I need to work harder
now days till I really forget to take care of my health.

Ranjini: Haizzzz, probably that's why you don't feel well.

Junior: What do you mean?
Ranjini: I mean, a person who studies all the day and does not take exercise should he not
fall ill?
Junior: Why don't you tell me clearly?
Ranjini: Listen. The demands of being a college student can be high and can be very
stressful and exercise one of the best ways to deal with this. Exercise is very important for
health. When exam is near the students study all the day sitting at one place. Their food
does not digest properly. They fall ill.

Junior: Hmmm, but then if the goal of college is to get good grades, why would it be good to
exercise?

Ranjini: Many students have the same mentality, theyre thinking that coming to college just
to go back with a degree at the end of year. It is not like that actually sis. First of all, every
college student must realize that exercising is something must be inserted in our daily
routine like other daily tasks such as sleeping, eating and bathing. Secondly, this exercise
can really be anything that gets your body moving for a defined period of time. It could be
walking, running, swimming, riding a bike, using exercise equipment, taking exercise classes
and so on. The best way to identify if you are doing something that qualifies as exercise is to
see if you are breaking a sweat or able to create an increase in heart rate for a reasonable
period of time.

Junior: Oh really?

Ranjini: Yes, I found an interesting article regarding this exercise matter recently in a blog.
From that site I actually got to know some new information on why college students should
make time for exercise.

11 | P a g e

Junior: Hmmm, sounds interesting! What are the reasons? Would you share some with me
as I am very curious to know it.
Ranjini: Yeah, with pleasure dear! It is stated in the article that exercising will stimulate brain
cell development which is very important for college students. Other than that, exercise also
improves memory retention, increases focus and concentration. It is also proven scientifically
that exercise boosts mood and relieves stress.
Junior: Wow, exercising can bring up these much of changes to a college students life?
Ranjini: Yes, of course it does! But unfortunately many students like us still yet realize it. For
them it seems cruel to add another obligation to their busy packed schedule.
Junior: You may be right.
Ranjini: Not may be but I am. You must have know the importance of exercise.
Junior: What should I do then?
Ranjini: Take exercise regularly either in the morning or in the evening. But in the morning it
is better. You will get well without a doctor in no time.
Junior: From tomorrow morning, I'll start taking exercise.
Ranjini: That is a good thing. Take care of your health dear. See you then, good bye.
Junior: Good bye.

TASK 2
According to the oral dialogue carried out with one my campus junior named Kavitha, I have
prepared a report on the process of preparing the oral dialogue as written below.

To : Madam Khairul Nisak Bt. Haji Ahmad, Course Coordinator

From : Ranjini Valauthan, student of PISMP BM, 2nd Semester
Date : 04th September 2014
Report on the process of preparing Task 1
I am Ranjini Valauthan, student of Bachelor of Education, majoring Bahasa Melayu in
Afzans Teachers Trainee Institution reporting to Madam Khairul Nisak, my course
coordinator for English Languange Proficiency II (ELP) course on a conversation carried out
on last 04th September 2014, Thursday. This conversation was based on the oral dialogue
script that I prepared as required in the task one of my ELP course work.
First of all, this conversation was actually held at the media room of Mawar girls
hostel of my campus with one of my junior named Kavitha. She is a new intake student of
my instituition, doing her majoring in Tamil language course. It was easy for me to carry out
this conversation with her as she is staying in the same hostel with me in Mawar. It was not
hard for me to complete my task on this particular topic with such an easy going person like
Kavitha. She cooperated very well with me and I am very thankful to her for helping me to
complete this task without any obstacles.
My partner Kavitha and I actually prepared ourselves with the oral dialogue script
before starts our conversation. The conversation was actually included various types of
questions, different forms of sentences, asking opinions and giving opinions, agreeing and
disagreeing opinions and moreover to make the conversations sounds interesting without
putting anyone into boredom. There were about fifteen exchanges of dialogues through out
the conversation.
Other than that, as stated in the course work, I chose an issue entitled The
importance of exercising for college students which goes under the theme health for my oral
dialogue. My entire conversation with Kavitha was all about the importance of exercising in
every college students life and suggestions on how to make exercising as a regular habit in
daily routine There were also an analytical discussion in the conversation about an article

based on this topic which states that exercising will stimulate brain cell development which is
very important for college students. Other than that, exercise also improves memory
retention, increases focus and concentration. It is also proven scientifically that exercise
boosts mood and relieves stress. Besides improving my speaking skill effectively I were
actually gained lots of additional knowledge on the importance of exercising which plays a
major role in a college students life.
While carrying out this task, I faced some challenges such time management,
technical difficulties and the hardest part was choosing a partner from other course. Each
and every single thing that I faced during this activity made me even stronger to face
something harder than those challenges. Moreover, as I reflect upon on my strengths and
weaknesses as related to this course, I think that the old saying about how my "greatest
weakness became my greatest strength" applies here. I actually learned to be less
dependent on the instructor and more dependent on me after conducting this task.
Lastly, I think this was a good learning experience to improve ones speaking and
writing skill because both the skills are required in whatever circumstances we are in. I wish
this kind of tasks will be continued so that greater achievements and talents can be polished
in each person. I hope the knowledge and experience that I gain from this assignment will
help me to perform well in my daily life and during my teaching time. The most important
thing is my understandings and learning skills on English language have been highly
increased as my speaking and writing skills increases too.
