Call for Applications Postdoc Mercator Fellowships

The research training group 1576/2 Value and equivalence. The genesis and transformation of values from an archaeological and anthropological perspective, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), is accepting applications for a Visiting Research Fellowship (1-3 months) in 2015.
The research training group at the Goethe University Frankfurt and the TU Darmstadt focuses on concepts of value and
equivalence in relation to material culture in a broad geographical and chronological framework. There is no society
without an idea about Value and Equivalence worldwide, although these concepts may entail different meanings and
understanding between societies. These concepts constitute highly appropriate approaches to the study of material culture. By focusing the research program toward these concepts, the participating disciplines, Archaeological sciences,
Cultural Anthropology and Sinology, obtain a valuable approach to the study of material objects in different societies
during different eras across five continents. Based on the case studies of individual dissertation projects, the participants
of the Research Training Group (RTG) will be enabled to explain the embedding of material objects in different cultural
contexts. For further information please visit our website www.value-and-equivalence.de.
Fellowship applicants should have obtained their doctoral degree 3-5 years ago and have achieved scholarly distinction
in any of the fields relevant to the research training group. They should present projects which refer specifically to one or
several of the research areas defined by the group: (A) generation of values and the modes of circulation within a society; (B) transformation of value through trade and transnational mobility; (C) goods and traders. The Visiting Fellows are
expected to actively contribute to the activities of the group and to support the doctoral students in their professional
and personal development. Residence in or near Frankfurt for the time of the visit is a requirement of the position. The
Goethe University provides accommodation in their guest houses. International applications are particularly welcome.
By offering the position of a Mercator Fellow, the research training group aims to enlarge and broaden its international
research network. Successful applicants are expected to establish and maintain a substantial contact with the members
of the research training group (visits, papers, etc.). The position is fully funded.
The research training group and the universities involved have an equal opportunity policy and therefore explicitly encourage women to apply for the position. According to German law, under equal conditions disabled persons will be
given preference. The Goethe University was entitled to the audit familiengerechte hochschule in 2005 and strives to
create a family friendly working environment.

Applications should include a letter of interest with a proposal for networking initiatives, CV, publication list, a research
proposal or summery of a current research project (1000 words), contact details of two referees, and a published writing
sample. Please direct your electronic application to:
