Make It Matter is the antidote to crisis levels of disengagement. This upbeat, original book shows how meaning-rich workplaces connect, inspire, and catapult employees into new realms of productivity and well-being.
Not only does the book make a convincing case for change, it also explains how to

Confronting Capitalism

Real Solutions for a Troubled Economic System

Philip Kotler

ith the fall of the Berlin Wall, one economic model

emerged triumphant. Capitalismspanning a spectrum
from laissez faire to authoritarianshapes the market economies of all the wealthiest and fastest-growing nations.
But trouble is cracking its shiny veneer. In the U.S., Europe, and
Japan, economic growth has slowed down. Wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few; natural resources are exploited for
short-term profit; and good jobs are hard to find.
With piercing clarity, Philip Kotler explains 14 major problems
undermining capitalism, including persistent poverty, job
creation in the face of automation, high debt burdens, the disproportionate influence of the wealthy on public policy, steep
environmental costs, boom-bust economic cycles, and more.
Amidst its dire assessment of whats ailing us, Confronting
Capitalism delivers a heartening message: We can turn things
around. Movements toward shared prosperity and a higher
purpose are reinvigorating companies large and small, while
proposals abound on government policies that offer protections
without stagnation. Kotler identifies the best ideas, linking
private and public initiatives into a force for positive change.
Combining economic history, expert insight, business lessons,
and recent data, this landmark book elucidates todays critical
dilemmas and suggests solutions for returning to a healthier,
more sustainable Capitalismthat works for all.
PHILIP KOTLER (Chicago, IL) is the S.C. Johnson & Son Distinguished

Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Although best known as a marketing guru, Kotler is a classically trained economist who did his Masters
studies at the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, the
famed Nobel laureate and free-market evangelist, before moving to
MIT to pursue a Ph.D. under Paul Samuelson and Robert Solow, two
Nobel Prize-winning Keynesian economists.

When Kids Call the Shots

How to Seize Control from Your Darling Bullyand Enjoy Being a Parent Again
Sean Grover

ebellious, entitled, disrespectful, many kids pummel their parents with demands,
and boss them around with impunity. Experts might label them difficult and
advise how to fix them. But parenting struggles rarely originate from just one side.
Instead, they erupt at the volatile intersection of a childs personality with a parents
own insecurities and behaviors. Fixing the child requires fixing yourself.
In When Kids Call the Shots, therapist and parenting expert Sean Grover untangles the
forces driving family dysfunction, and helps parents assume leadership roles. With a
liberating message and perceptive advice, the book explores:
Three common bullying styles (defiant, manipulative, anxious) used by kids
Parenting styles (guilt-prone, anxiety-fueled, fix-everything) that contribute to
power imbalances Critical testing periods in a childs development Coping
mechanisms that backfire Personalized plans for calmly exerting authority in

No Sweat

How the Simple Science of Motivation

Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness
Michelle Segar, Ph.D.
e start out with the best intentions. Were going to exercise
more and get in shape! Then five days a week at the gym
turns into two then becomes none. We hit the snooze button
and skip the morning run.

We really do want to be healthy and fit, but were overwhelmed

and overextendedand exercise feels like another chore to
complete. Is it any wonder we dont stick with it?
Behavior expert Michelle Segar has devoted her career to the science of motivation. In No Sweat, she reveals that while better
health or weight loss sound like strong incentives, human
beings are hardwired to choose immediate gratification over
delayed benefits. In other words, were not going to exercise
unless it makes us happy right now.
So whats the solution? To achieve lasting fitness, we have to
change our mindsbefore we can change our bodies. In No
Sweat, Segar shows us how. Translating twenty years of research
on exercise and motivation into a simple four-point program,
she helps readers broaden their definition of exercise, find pleasure in physical activity, and discover realistic ways to fit it into
their lives. Activities we enjoy, we repeatmaking this evidencebased system more sustainable in the long run than a regimen
of intense workouts. Even if we dont sweat, we really benefit.
The success of the clients Segar has coached testifies to the power of her program. Their stories punctuate the book, entertaining and emboldening readers to break the cycle of exercise
failure once and for all. Complete with worksheets, tips, and
techniques, getting in shape has never been so easyor so
much fun.
MICHELLE SEGAR, PH.D., (Ann Arbor, MI) is a behavioral sustainability

scientist and Director of the Sport, Health, & Activity Research and

Stress-Free Discipline

Simple Strategies for Handling Common Behavior Problems

ll children test boundaries (and sometimes your patience).

Its a natural part of growing up. Your job as a parent is to
let them know whats acceptable and what isnt, praise good
behavior, and enforce limits.
Easier said than done. Even the best-intentioned parents can
find themselves shoutingor capitulating yet again to avoid
a scene. Worse, the one-size-fits-all discipline methods experts
tout can be too narrow for some concerns.
Blending developmental insights with an arsenal of proven
techniques, Stress-Free Discipline prepares parents for any challenge: the preschooler who throws a fit . . . the second-grader
who refuses homework . . . the budding tween who dishes out
insults. The book helps determine the root cause, explaining
what drives the behavior, why its usually normal, how to prevent escalations, and how to instill self-control. Once parents
grasp the underlying motivation they can select the strategy that
fits their childs age, temperament, and issueincluding role
modeling, setting limits, positive reinforcement, negative consequences, disengagementand deploy it calmly and with confidence. Examples and exercises throughout help readers personalize the authors advice to their unique situation.
Practical, thoughtful, and deeply informative, Stress-Free Discipline is the one book every family needs for a more peaceful
and happy home.

that Saved a Beloved Business

hat if a company were so treasured and trusted that

people literally took to the streetsby the thousandsto
save it? That company is Market Basket, a popular New England
supermarket chain.
After long-time CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas, the companys managers and rank-andfile workers struck back. Risking their own livelihoods to restore
the job of their beloved boss they walked out, but they didnt
walk far. At huge protest rallies, they were joined by loyal customersleaving stores empty. Suppliers and vendors stopped
deliveriesrendering shelves bare. Politicians were forced to
take sides. The national media and experts were stunned by the
unprecedented defense of an executive. All openly challenged
the Market Basket board of directors to make things right.
And, in the end, they prevailed.
With its arresting firsthand accounts from the streets and executive suites, We Are Market Basket is as inspiring as it is instructive.
What is it about Market Basket and its leader that provokes such
ferocious loyalty? How does a company spread across three
states maintain a culture that embraces everyonefrom cashier
to customeras family? Can a company really become an industry leader by prioritizing stakeholders over shareholders?
Set against a backdrop of bad blood and corporate greed, We
Are Market Basket is, above all, a page-turner that chronicles the
epic rise, fall, and redemption of this iconic and uniquely
American company.
