THE FORTY HOLY MARTYRS
OF
SEBASTE
In 313 Emperor Constantine the Great issued an Edict granting Christians

religious freedom.
However, his pagan co-ruler, Emperor Licinius, wanted to annihilate all
Christians in his part of the Roman Empire, and while preparing to go
into battle against Emperor Constantine, he decided to remove all
Christians from his army in fear of a mutiny.
One of the Military Commanders of that time in the Armenian city of Sebaste
was Agricola - a zealous champion of idolatry.
Under his command was a company of forty Christian Cappadocians, who
were brave soldiers who had distinguished themselves in many battles,
but when they refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, Agricola had
them arrested and imprisoned.
The Forthy Faithful Christian Soldiers occupied themselves with Prayer and
Psalmody, and during the night they heard a Heavenly Voice saying:
Persevere until the end, then you shall be Saved.
The following morning, the Forty Soldiers were taken to Agricola, who,
knowing of their splendid military achievements, praised their valour,
their youth and their strength, before urging them to renounce Christ
and thereby win the respect and favour of their Emperor.
Seven days later, the renowned judge and Roman Governor, Licius, arrived
at Sebaste to try these brave, faithful soldiers who steadfastly responded
to all the efforts of persuasion and threats: Take not only our military
insignia, but also our lives, since nothing is more precious to us than
Christ God!
Governor Licius then ordered his servants to stone the Holy Martyrs, but the
stones missed the Saints and instead struck those who had thrown them.
One stone thrown with great force by Governor Licius hit Agricola in the
face and smashed his teeth whereupon the torturers realized that the
Faithful Soldiers were guarded by some Invisible Power.
That night, once again, as the Faithful Soldiers spent the night in Prayer
and Psalmody, they heard the Voice of our Lord comforting them: He
who believes in Me - though he die, yet shall he live . Be brave and
fear not, for you shall obtain Imperishable Crowns.
The next day their interrogation continued and, as before, the brave
Soldiers of Christ remained serene and unyielding to all the threats that
confronted them.
It was a very cold winter, and there was severe frost, as the Holy Soldiers
were forced into a frozen lake near the city.
Several guards were posted along the shoreline to prevent any of them
from coming out of the freezing water, and - in order to dishearten and
to tempt the Forty Holy Martyrs they had set up warm, alluring bathhouses.
During the First Hour of the night, when the cold had become utterly
unbearable, one of the soldiers suddenly made a dash for the bathhouse, but no sooner had he stepped over the threshold, than he fell
down, dead.
During the Third Hour of the night, our Lord Jesus Christ sent Consolation to
His brave, Faithful Soldiers, by means of a Heaveyn Light that melted the
encroaching ice and warmed the water that surrounded them.
All the guards had fallen asleep, except for one - Aglaios - who kept watch.

The
Holy Martyrs suffered painful

tortures for Thy Sake, O Lord; be
compelled by what they endured,
and heal our every pain, we Entreat
Thee, as the Only One Who Loves
humanity.
He witnessed how a radiant Crown had appeared hovering over each of

the 39 Holy Martyrs and he realized that the soldier who surrendered
and died, had lost his Crown of Glory.
Aglaios shook the other guards awake, stripped off his uniform and loudly
declared: I, too, am a Christian! before joining the Holy Martyrs in the
freezing waters of the lake.
As he shivered in the excruciatingly cold water, he prayed with all his heart
and soul: Lord God, I believe in Thee in Whom these soldiers believe.
Add me to their number, and make me worthy to suffer with Thy
servants. And while he prayed thus, a fortieth Crown appeared over
his head.
In the dawning light, the persecutors were astounded to see that not only
were the Forty Holy Martyrs still alive, but that even their former guard.
Aglios was Glorifying Christ together with them!
Being very cold, miserable and perhaps a little afraid, the persecuters
decided to put an end to these stubborn, but courageous Soldiers so
ordered them out of the lake and smashed their legs, leaving them to
die a slow, excruciatingly painful death.
During this horrific torture, the mother of the youngest of the soldiers ( St
Meliton), encouraged her son to persevere until death.
When almost all the soldiers, except St Meliton, had finally Reposed, the
Roman soldiers threw their martyred bodies onto a cart, which was to
carry them to another area where they were to be burnt.
St Meliton was still breathing, so they left him to die on the frozen ground.
His mother immediately picked him up and carried him with great
difficulty, behind the cart, so that he would not be separated from his
fellow Holy Martyrs.
Eventually, when St Meliton drew his last breath and surrendered his
Immortal soul to our Lord, his mother called out to the Roman soldiers to
stop the cart so that she could gently place him together with his fellow
sufferers.
The bodies of the Forty Holy Martyrs were thrown into a huge fire, and
afterwards when the coals had died down sufficiently their charred
bones were gathered up and thrown into the lake to prevent the
Christians from gathering them up and burying them with reverence
and honour.
However, three days later, the Forty Holy Martyrs of Sebaste appeared in a
Vision to St Peter the Bishop, and requested him to locate and bury their
remains.
So it was that together with several clergymen, the Bishop went in secret to
the exact spot where the Holy Relics had been discarded and, by the
Grace of God, they were able to collect them all and bury them with all
due respect.
May their memories be Eternal and may they intercede with our Lord Jesus
Christ on our behalf for the Salvation of our immortal soul.
