BANGKOK

With a warm, tropical climate, Bangkok is a popular destination any time of the year.
However, the monsoon season from May through October keeps many visitors at bay
with unpredictable storms, although it is the least expensive time to visit. Most people
prefer to come to Bangkok during November through April when the weather is dry and
pleasant even though prices are at their peak.
PHUKET
The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool NE monsoon season, from November
through March when it isn't so humid, and the cool breezes keep things comfortable. The
average temperature is around 75F to 89F (24C to 32C).
The hottest time is from April through May with temperatures ranging from 80F to 95F
(27C to 36C). There are frequent short heavy thundery showers, offering welcome relief
from the temperature and humidity. The Thai New Year occurs (Songkran Festival) on
April 13th and everyone sprinkles (or throws) cool water on each other. No wonder!
Locals enjoy June, July and August since the weather is usually fine. The usual pattern is
brief but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours. Everything is a
little less expensive at this time of year as well. Temperatures range between 70F and
90F (20C to 33C).
During September and early October, locals start to remember their umbrellas. This
makes an ideal time for the locals to visit abroad. One consolation for those who remain
is that the beaches, outdoor restaurants and streets are relatively uncluttered by visitors.
And even at this time, they still get long intervals of sunshine between the heavy
showers.
CHIANG MAI
The best time to visit Chiang Mai is between the months of October and April. And, for
those who don't mind daily torrential rains, Chiang Mai can be an all-year destination.
Most of the foreign travelers fall in the former category. Local tourists, used to weather
conditions, visit Chiang Mai as and when they like.
However, the period between October and April is the most pleasant for holidaying. This
is the time when the rainy season comes to an end and the winters are knocking on the
doors.
Being a mountainous terrain, rains in Chiang Mai are unpredictable and irregular. When
combined with hailstorms, they often disrupt public life. Thus, it is advisable to visit
Chiang Mai only after the rainy season is over. Otherwise, a tourist who's new to the city
might find it difficult to cope with these conditions.

Winters are prevalent in Chiang Mai between November and February. During this
period, the air is clean and the weather is extremely pleasant and almost ideal for
vacations. Despite March and April being the hottest months, you can make a visit in this
period if you are interested in learning about the history of Chiang Mai.
HONG KONG
Hong Kongs rainfall is particularly heavy from early May until late September, but
some rain occurs in all months. Although occasional cold spells, lasting a few days,
occur in winter, snow and frost are virtually unknown and the period from October to
March is generally warm and dry.
Humidity is high during the rather hot, wet summer and the weather is often very sultry
and oppressive. Particularly between July and September, typhoons, moving northwards
from the South China Sea, bring heavy rain and very violent winds which can cause
damage to property and loss of life.
Although mainly dry, the months from February to April are rather cloudy and sunshine
then averages only three or four hours a day, as compared with an average of six to eight
hours a day during the months July to December.
BEIJING
Beijing has four very distinct seasons characterised by hot summers and cold winters.
Most visitors prefer to travel during spring and autumn, thus avoiding the extreme
weather seen at other times of the year.
Springtime is a great time to be in Beijing, with warm temperatures and a fair amount of
dry, sunny days. The city is also free from the worst of the pollution, which can be
particularly unpleasant in the summer. Unless you like crowded, chaotic scenes, avoid
traveling during the Chinese New Year when hotels are full and space on public transport
hard to come by.
The summer months, from June to September, have the hottest temperatures,
occasionally climbing above 40C. Rainfall is also frequent during this time, so the
Chinese tend not to travel so much. This means that rooms are easy to find and most of
the attractions are quieter.
Autumn is another good time to visit as the days are still warm and sunny, and the
evenings are clearer and cooler than the hot summer months. It is also considerably
dryer, making it the most popular time of year for visitors. Winters can be harsh and
bitterly cold with temperatures sometimes plummeting to -20C or less. The wind chill is
also a factor and snow is common.
SHANGHAI

Shanghai experiences four distinct seasons, with spring and autumn being the best
months to visit the city. This is largely to do with endurable temperatures and less
crowds. However, September and October can sometimes be windy and can even see the
odd typhoon.
The peak summer months (July and August) can be unbearably hot with temperatures
often reaching in excess of 35C and 80 per cent humidity. Most of the citys rain also
falls during this time. If you are considering traveling during in these months, it is
advisable to book accommodation ahead of time to ensure you get a booking.
Winters can often be bitterly cold with most evenings seeing temperatures fall below
0C. As they are so cold, sightseeing is often out of the question, as is sitting on a beach.
Although somewhat limited, winter sports are offered in some areas. Avoid traveling in
January or February when Chinese New Year brings the country to a halt.
BALI
Bali has a tropical climate, which is influenced by the seasonal shift in wind direction
brought about by the monsoon. The dry season is from April to October and the wet
season from October to March, although it can rain at any time of the year. The best
months to visit Bali are May to August when the rains are lightest and temperatures
cooler. Sea breezes around the coast can make the high temperatures feel more pleasant.
Temperatures vary from 24C to 30C, but can be much lower in the highlands.
CENTRAL KALIMANTAN, JAKARTA, JAVA, SUMATRA
Primarily due to the elevation of much of the land, this is the wettest region of Indonesia.
Rain is common year round with no real distinction between the wet and dry seasons.
Temperatures remain constant throughout, although warmer clothes are required in the
mountainous regions where temperatures can drop well below the average. Best time to
visit: Between June and September when rainfall tends to be marginally lower.
KUALA LUMPUR
One constant in Kuala Lumpur is the climate. It has consistently warm daytime
temperatures, balmy evenings and afternoons that are often punctuated by thunderstorms,
usually passing quickly to leave the evenings cool and rain free.
Temperatures range from 21 C to 33 C and the average humidity exceeds 82%.
Although there is rain throughout the year, March to April and September to November
are the wettest months.
PENANG
Penangs location near the equator means that its weather is influenced by a tropical
climate, keeping temperatures warm and relatively stable year-round. Temperatures

range from an average low of 22C at night to 32C during the day; and humidity levels
remain high, at around 90 per cent.
There are no distinct seasons in Penang and the average annual rainfall ranges from 200
to 250cm. Rain falls throughout the year, although the months of September to
November are typically the wettest.
Visitors will find the weather to be generally warm to hot, sunny and quite uniform. Its
rare to have a day when the sun doesnt shine and its equally rare to have a day when
there isnt at least one short, cooling shower.
MANILA
The Manila weather is hot and humid all throughout the year. But between the months of
November and February the climate of Manila is cooler. The hottest month in Manila is
May and the temperature is around 83 degree F/ 28 degrees C. On the other hand the
rainy season is between the months of June and October.
The Philippines is a tropical country and has two seasons - the wet and the dry season.
The dry season in Manila is between the months of late October to May. The
temperatures ranges from the cool and breezy. Whereas the Manila weather during the
summer season would range from 93 degrees F to 75 degrees F.
CEBU
Cebus tropical climate is tempered by the breezes that blow over the island from the
Pacific Ocean. The temperature range over the year is from 26C to 38C. At night,
temperatures dip. During the winter, temperatures can drop as low as 18C at night. The
winter season, which is the coolest period, runs from October to February. The summer
season, which can be hot, stretches from late February through May. Overall, the highest
temperatures are recorded in March and April.
The best time to visit Cebu is from December to May. Although the temperatures vary
from cool in December to quite hot by April, this is the driest part of the year.
Temperatures can reach 38C to 40C in mid-to-late summer. In the latter part of June,
the rainy season begins, at times bringing torrential downpours. While the rains typically
dont last all day, they can make some roads impassable and therefore visitors should
avoid visiting at this time.
DAVAO
Davaos climate has no clearly discernible seasons and year-round consistent
temperatures, relative humidity, air pressure and rainfall. Temperatures fall between 20C
and 32C, and volumes of rainfall can reach 2,000mm per annum.

As there is no clear wet or dry seasons in Davao, there is no particular time of the year
when its more appropriate to visit. Trips can be scheduled for any month provided
visitors are happy to pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for the possibility of rain.
The sun can heat things up on some days, so its wise to make sure you dont overexpose yourself and wear a sunscreen appropriate to your skin type whenever you are
outside for any length of time.
BAGUIO
Baguio benefits from a pleasant climate. Compared to the Filipino lowlands, the weather
here is cool and refreshing. While people in Manila typically struggle through
temperatures in the mid to high 30s (C), Baguio enjoys much more comfortable
temperatures that rarely exceed 26C.
However, during the rainy season in the Philippines, which runs from June to October,
Baguio is not so fortunate. During a normal wet season, Baguio sees twice as much rain
as Manila. As the rain dries up, Baguio becomes a tropical paradise with people flocking
here to escape the heat and humidity elsewhere in the country. Christmas is a good time
to visit, when the evening temperatures are cool enough for visitors to enjoy sitting
around bonfires.
SINGAPORE
Like most of Southeast Asia, Singapore is generally hot and humid. It's warm and humid
year round, with the temperature almost never dropping below 20C (68F), even at
night, and usually climbing to 30C (86F) during the day. Recent times, it even reached
till 35C. Humidity is high, mounting over a 75% mark.
November and December is the rainy season. June-August is considered to be the best
time to visit, but even then it rains often. Don't let the climate stop you from going,
however. Most buildings are air-conditioned (to the point that you may want to take a
sweater), and pains have been taken to make everything as comfortable as can be, all
things considered. When it does rain, it's generally only for a short period.
SYDNEY
Sydney has a pleasantly mild climate. Temperatures are generally in the mid 20's with
clear sunny days common for around a third of the year.
Summer is the most popular time to visit Sydney with temperatures ranging from 19 to
26 degrees Celsius (66 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit). You can get occasional hot days where
the mercury can rise to over 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
Winter temperatures range from an average of 8 to 18 degrees Celsius (45 to 65 degrees
Fahrenheit) and while there are plenty of clear sunny days over the cooler months, there

can also be a chilly westerly wind blowing down off the Great Dividing Range making it
quite cold in exposed areas and in the shade.
MELBOURNE
January and February
It is high summer in Melbourne during January and February, a typical day is warm and
sunny with a freshening sea breeze arriving from the south in the afternoon. A few days
are cool and cloudy, a maximum temperature below 20C being recorded about once a
week. There are always hot days and the year's highest temperature of about 40C is
usually recorded during these two months. Some of the hot days are accompanied by an
unpleasant north wind, which can be quite strong. Mostly there are only one or two hot
days in a row. Occasionally hot weather may continue for three or more days, when the
daily appearance of that cool refreshing, north bound sea breeze in the afternoon,
becomes that days most welcome visitor. The year's warmest night, with a minimum
temperature of about 24C, is also recorded during these two months. Hot weather
normally ends with an abrupt cool change when the mercury may fall by 10C in only
twenty minutes. Some of these changes are dry and arid; showers and thunderstorms
accompany others. High levels of humidity create discomfort on very few days, mostly
towards the end of a hot spell. It is not uncommon for a fortnight to pass without rain. On
occasions prolonged heavy rain can fall.
March
March is a transitional month between summer and autumn. Hot weather can be
experienced in the first fortnight, when the month's highest temperature of about 35C is
usually recorded; it may well be accompanied by a strong northerly wind during the day.
The hot weather usually comes to an end with a sharp wind change to the southwest and
a rapid fall in temperature. Humidity is uncomfortable on about one day only. Many days
are mild and sunny although some days are cool and cloudy. A maximum temperature
below 20C is recorded about twice a week. The afternoon sea breeze is not near as
strong as in mid-summer. Nights are noticeably cooler than in the preceding month.
Towards the end of March, it is quite common for the overnight temperature to fall
below 10C on one or two occasions. The month is fairly dry however prolonged heavy
rain, falls occasionally.
April
April is a pleasant month, often with spells of fine sunny weather lasting several days
during which the temperature occasionally exceeds 25C. Every second year 30C is
exceeded. The nights are quite cool with temperatures falling below 10C several times a
week. Once in every five years an overnight minimum temperature below 5C is
recorded. Fog occurs during the early morning on a few occasions but clears to a sunny
day. There are usually several days of strong wind; mostly from the north but the average
wind speed of 9 kilometres per hour is the lowest of any month. Prolonged heavy rain

falls occasionally. In April 1960, 172 mm fell within three days. On the other hand, April
1923 is the only rainless calendar month on record.
May
May is an appreciably cooler month. The last instance until spring of temperatures in the
low 20s usually occurs in the first fortnight. In May 1904 the temperature exceeded 20C
on all but two of the first fifteen days. The first frosts of the year occur in the outer
suburbs late in the month. In the city itself, the coldest night of the month usually has a
minimum temperature of 4C, a little too high for frost. Fog occurs on several mornings
but both frost and fog are usually followed by a fine and sunny day. This late autumn,
early winter period is notable for extended periods of very light winds in Melbourne,
although there are a few days of strong wind, mostly from the north. Cloudy and
showery weather may persist for some days at a time, but prolonged heavy rain is rare.
June
The weather in June is cold, often with spells of fine and calm weather. There are more
days with very light winds in June than in any other month. It is also the foggiest month.
Fog usually forms in the late evening and clears by mid-morning, occasionally it may
persist for most of the day. Many days are cloudy, June being the cloudiest month of the
year. Nights are cold with occasional frosts, mostly in the outer suburbs, the lowest
temperature for the month in the city usually being about 2C. Rain falls on one day in
two and sometimes it is in the form of drizzle in the morning which clears to a fine day.
Heavy rain is rare.
July and August
The windiest time of the year in Melbourne begins in July. There may be several days in
succession of strong, cold north to northwest winds, often with cloud and some light
rain. The weather is frequently cold and cloudy. The few days of calm sunny weather are
accompanied by cold nights with frost or fog. Fog usually forms late in the evening and
clears by mid-morning, but occasionally persists for the whole day during July. There are
usually a few very cold days with strong southerly winds and showers, light snow may
fall on the hills within 35 km of the city centre. On rare occasions, snow even falls in the
city. The year's coldest day, with a maximum temperature of about 9C, usually occurs
during July. Some rain falls on an average of one day in two; on some of these days there
may be only a little drizzle or a light shower. The highest number of wet days in any onemonth in the city is twenty-seven, in August 1939. However, heavy rain is rare at this
time of the year. In late August there are some warmer days, when the temperature
usually reaches 20C for the first time since May.
September
September is the first month of spring, which is the most changeable season of the year.
A full range of weather may be experienced within a few days, from warm, calm and
sunny to cold, windy and showery. There are several cloudy to overcast days. September

is another windy month. Most strong winds are from the north, these often occur on the
warmer days. There also are occasionally strong cold southwest winds with showery
weather. The temperature usually reaches the mid-20s for the first time since April.
Nights are cool, frost is fairly rare, and the lowest temperature for the month in the city
being about 4C. Fog is uncommon. Rainfall is higher in spring than in winter, falling on
one day in two. There are days with only a little drizzle or a light shower but heavy rain
falls occasionally.
October
The changeable weather of spring continues in October, there is greater contrast between
the warmer and colder days than in the preceding month. The maximum temperature
exceeds 25C once a week. However, it also fails to reach 15C once a week. There are
several cloudy to overcast days and many days are windy. Most strong winds are
northerly and warm, but there are occasionally strong cold southwest winds bringing
showery conditions. Warm windy weather may be followed by a sudden change to colder
conditions with showers. Rain falls on almost one day in two, some of it heavy.
November
Changeable and windy weather continues in November. There is often great contrast in
the temperature from day to day. Warm to hot and sunny days and cold and showery days
may follow each other in rapid succession. There are also some cloudy to overcast days.
Nights are usually mild. Many days are windy. Most strong winds are northerly and
warm, however cold showery weather with strong southerly winds can occur. The
month's warmest day registers a maximum temperature of about 34C while the month's
coldest day experiences a maximum temperature of only 16C. Some of the most severe
storms with gales and rain have occurred at this time of the year.
December
The weather is less changeable in December than it is in November, although it still can
be quite varied. Cool and cloudy conditions can prevail for some days at a time during
which the temperature remains below 20C. There are also some hot days, temperatures
exceeding 30C on about six occasions, but hot weather does not often last for more than
two days at a time. There have, however, been occasions when it persisted for much
longer. Hot days are sometimes accompanied by an unpleasant north wind, which can be
quite strong. On about two days high temperatures are associated with high humidity and
there may be thunderstorms in the late afternoon on these occasions. Hot weather often
comes to an end with an abrupt cool change when the temperature may fall by about
10C in twenty minutes. Some of these changes are accompanied by showers and
thunderstorms then followed by strong and cold southwesterly winds. Nights are usually
mild yet during hot weather the temperature overnight may not fall below 20C. Heavy
rain falls on occasions.
BRISBANE

Brisbane is located on the eastern coast of Australia, in the southern hemisphere, and
features a subtropical climate with hot, humid summer months, between December to
February.
Night-time temperatures in Brisbane remain mild and warm throughout the year, even
during the winter months, from June to August. January generally offers the hottest
climate in Brisbane, during the height of the summer, when temperatures peak at around
30C / 86F. Summers in Brisbane can be fairly humid, featuring the wettest weather,
although showers are usually quick to clear. The average annual daytime temperatures in
Brisbane are around 25C / 78F.
PERTH
Perth has a Mediterranean climate and is located in one of only five Mediterranean
climate zones in the world. This means that for most of the year, the weather is fine and
sunny, and even during the short mild winter the sun is often shining
Spring begins in September in Perth, and from this time on, the weather quickly warms
to fine sunny conditions for the many months ahead. For the most part spring is sunny
and warm, especially from October and November, the weather is generally fine and rain
is usually minimal or absent.
The official start of summer in Perth is December, finishing 3 months later at the end of
February. The weather is warm to hot over the summer months, although the hottest
months are usually January and February. The weather is fine and dry, and rain at this
time of year is very unusual. Perth also enjoys a refreshing afternoon sea breeze known
as the Fremantle Doctor which brings welcome relief on hot days.
Autumn begins in March and finishes at the end of May, although autumn in Perth is not
typical of autumns most people would be familiar with. Autumn in Perth is like an
extension of summer, or perhaps a second spring. With warm sunny days and cooler
nights, there is still plenty of sunshine left before the onset of winter. Although the
weather is still mostly fine, there may be an occasional shower or humidity.
The mild Perth winter begins at the start of June and finishes at the end of August. It is
generally a rainy season, mingled with cool sunny days. There are however occasional
storms, characterised by downpours of rain, lightning or thunder.
ADELAIDE
Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny weather for most of the year.
Annual sunshine hours are high, at over 2,500 hours. Rainfall comes mainly in winter.
Unlike the east coast cities of Sydney and Brisbane, Adelaide's skies are cloudier in
winter than in summer.

A bad winter's day in Adelaide would probably start at around three or four degrees
Celsius and reach a maximum of thirteen degrees Celsius or so. Most winter days are
warmer than this.
There are two main climate hazards in summer - sunburn and extreme heat. On a few
days each summer the mercury rises to above 40 degrees Celsius
TAIPEI
Taipei's semi-tropical climate is typically hot and humid throughout most of the year.
The rainy season reaches its peak between May and September, though there is also a
substantial amount of precipitation from February until April. Even outside of the official
rainy season, consistent bouts of rainfall are normal.
The hottest months are July and August, when highs average at around 35C. At this time
of year, sightseeing around Taipei can be strenuous, so most tourists try to avoid these
warmest months. Temperatures are considerably cooler in January, when midnight lows
reach lows of around 13C. The best time to visit is in the late autumn, when
temperatures are comfortable and rainfall is at a minimum.
Seasonal typhoons occasionally sweep through during the summer. August and
September are the most likely months for a severe storm to pass through. Flight
cancellations can be a problem for visitors during these months.
TOKYO
Tokyo has a fairly temperate climate. The seasons feature very heavily in Japanese
culture and are very distinct. Summer temperatures don't go much over 32 degrees
centigrade, but the humidity can be stifling. Rainy seasons lasts about one month and
precedes summer starting around mid-July. Winter temperatures are around 5 to 10
degrees centigrade. A thick sweater and coat should be sufficient. Snow may fall in
Tokyo once or twice a year.
NAGOYA
The hottest month in Nagoya is August when the temperature reaches the over 35 degree
centigrade. January is the coldest month, the temperature in this month dips precariously
below the freezing point.
Nagoya receives rainfall most time of the year; it is most rainy during the month of June
and September. The average temperature for Nagoya is 15.7 centigrade, with a maximum
temperature of 36.7 centigrade and a minimum of -3.1 centigrade. As far as tourist
season is concerned, Nagoya may be visited anytime of the year barring the snowing
season. Nagoya as a coastal city is vulnerable to the many natural disasters.
OSAKA

10

Osaka enjoys a temperate climate, with summers which are relatively hot with
occasional showers of rain. The rainy and the typhoon season ranges from June to early
July and September to early October respectively, making it unsuitable as a holiday
destination.
The best time to visit Osaka therefore is during the happy seasons of spring and autumn.
The Cherry Blossom Festival during spring and the autumn leaves or Koyo viewings
during the autumn season are the prime attractions during the two seasons respectively.
And this registers the greatest of foot fall both of local tourists and of foreign visitors.
YOKOHAMA
With an average temperature of 16 degree Celsius, Yokohama is frequented almost
throughout the year by tourists. With heavy downpour in June, September and October;
Yokohama becomes very problematic for tourists during these months.
HO CHIH MINH
Being located in South Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City experiences just two seasons; wet
and dry. Its proximity to the equator and low altitude ensures a tropical climate. Although
the dry season is relatively cool, the wet season is typically warm and can go on for
seven or eight months.
With this in mind, the best time to visit is between the dry season months of December
and April, when temperatures, rainfall and humidity are lower. It gets busier with tourists
during this time, however, and hotel prices reflect this.
The most uncomfortable time to be in Ho Chi Minh City is generally between June and
August, when hot and humid conditions deter a lot of travellers. Expect heavy
downpours during this time of year that can often last for days, or even weeks, on end.
The one saving grace is that Ho Chi Minh doesnt get the destructive typhoons that the
North regularly sees.
HANOI
Hanois climate is typical of the region, experiencing three distinct seasons; a cool
season, a hot season and a rainy season. The cool season begins in early October and
lasts until the end of March, after which things start to hot up and temperatures hover
between the low 30s (C) to 35C. The hot season peaks in May but lasts until June, with
humidity being high throughout the period.
The rainy season, which follows sees a drop in temperature to the mid to upper 20s (C).
Precipitation is heavy throughout this season with volumes of 30cms per month not
uncommon. While intermittent dry spells are frequent, they are characterised by high
levels of humidity.
