The rainforests
Did you know that
some rainforests are older than dinosaurs?
some trees in the rainforest are 45 metres tall?
1 The Amazon rainforest is in Brazil. Its the biggest rainforest in the world. Thirty per cent of the
worlds animals and plants live there. In one square kilometre, you will find a thousand different
species. The plants are extremely important, because we use them in modern medicine. But, every
day, about 35 species become extinct and disappear.
2 Why? Because people dont protect the rainforests. Every year, more deforestation occurs. Last
year, people cut down an area as big as Galicia. Small farmers and big companies cut down the
trees for different reasons. Farmers want to have space to cultivate crops, companies cut down trees
to make paper and cardboard and the government wants to build a 750 kilometre-long road through
the rainforest to connect two cities.
3 If people carry on destroying the rainforests, the consequences will be serious for everybody.
Thats because the rainforests produce most of the earths oxygen. If they dont produce oxygen,
there will be more carbon dioxide in the air. If there is more carbon dioxide in the air, the worlds
temperature will increase. This problem is called global warming. Scientists predict that when a
baby born today is eighty years old, the world will be eleven degrees warmer than it is now.
We must protect the rainforests. We need them now and people will need them in the future.
