Beforewecancalculatethedensityofcarriersinasemiconductor,wehavetofindthenumberofavailable
statesateachenergy.Thenumberofelectronsateachenergyisthenobtainedbymultiplyingthenumberof
stateswiththeprobabilitythatastateisoccupiedbyanelectron.Sincethenumberofenergylevelsisvery
largeanddependentonthesizeofthesemiconductor,wewillcalculatethenumberofstatesperunitenergy
andperunitvolume.

2.4.1Calculationofthedensityofstates

Thedensityofstatesinasemiconductorequalsthedensityperunitvolumeandenergyofthenumberof
solutionstoSchrdinger'sequation.Wewillassumethatthesemiconductorcanbemodeledasaninfinite
quantumwellinwhichelectronswitheffectivemass,m* ,arefreetomove.Theenergyinthewellissetto
zero.ThesemiconductorisassumedacubewithsideL.Thisassumptiondoesnotaffecttheresultsincethe
densityofstatesperunitvolumeshouldnotdependontheactualsizeorshapeofthesemiconductor.
Thesolutionstothewaveequation(equation1.2.14)whereV(x)=0aresineandcosinefunctions:
